English to become the official European language

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".
In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.
Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.
Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.
By the 4th yer peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".
During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensi bl riten styl.
Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi TU understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.
Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

Och, Callistemon, there's naethin anti Scots aboot Parliamo Glasgow. The great Stanley Baxter was having a bit of fun at the expense of a BBC programme, 'Parliamo Italiano.' We Scots understood it and enjoyed it.

Chewbacca

Is it beyond the realms of possibility that with so much misery and anxiety in the world right now, that those of us who still possess a sense of humour, might be allowed to enjoy a smile at this, without the perpetually offended amongst us hoiking their bosoms up and wagging their finger at us?

Agreed

ditto Chewbacca ??

Jah. Naturellement. Ein petit bissen.

Ellianne Sat 13-Feb-21 15:58:40

Actually I feel I need to add to the chagrin. It looks like they're making fun of the beautiful French language here too. sad
replasing "th" with "z" in point 4 is not something Germans do, but the French. Germans would replace it with "d".
But am I bo^vv^ered? Not in the slightest!

Callistemon Sat 13-Feb-21 15:49:30

I didn't notice that!

Marydoll Sat 13-Feb-21 15:47:41

The subtitles on Elegran's video are so inaccutate, it makes it even funnier.

The purist in me can't bear the awful German.
Sprechen sie Englisch?

Callistemon Sat 13-Feb-21 15:46:58

But we are all speaking some German, aren't we.
English is an amalgam, a mongrel language.

I know just fine what I mean, thanks.

Alegrias1 Sat 13-Feb-21 15:43:05

Call - if you really don't know the difference between Stanley Baxter making comedy out of the Glasgow accent, and a dopey joke then ends up with a reference to Germans wanting us all to speak German then there's not much to be said about that. But I suspect you know fine.

As for trying to pretend its an amusing take on how languages develop, well in that well worn phrase often used in Scotland, Dinna try an' be cute. Disnae suit ye.

GillT57 Sat 13-Feb-21 15:42:49

Oh dear Rufus you did try to bring a bit of humour into the day, regrettably the humour went over many heads! grin

Callistemon Sat 13-Feb-21 15:36:55

I was laughing at Elegran's link but that must be anti-Scottish.

It's not anti-German, it's an amusing take on how languages develop:
By linguist criteria English is more similar to German, both belong in the West Germanic languages and its vocabulary has been influenced by other Germanic languages as well

Alegrias1 Sat 13-Feb-21 15:32:27

I've mostly given up commenting on xenophobic posts posing as humour, but I just thought I'd lend Amber Spyglass and geekesse my support.

Aveline Sat 13-Feb-21 15:28:58

Achtung!

Callistemon Sat 13-Feb-21 15:28:08

And geekesse - who appears to find so much on GN distasteful.

Callistemon Sat 13-Feb-21 15:25:40

Oh goodness me, there was me thinking that much of English derived from German and English was morphing back into German again.

Chewbacca Sat 13-Feb-21 15:24:45

Oh lighten up AmberSpyglass do.

geekesse Sat 13-Feb-21 15:22:13

I detect an undertone of anti-German sentiment is this which I find distasteful. Cartoon stereotyping of Germans in this way by making fun of their language may have been amusing in the middle of the last century, but it has no place now.

Callistemon Sat 13-Feb-21 15:22:04

Why?

AmberSpyglass Sat 13-Feb-21 15:07:41

Oh grow up.

Callistemon Sat 13-Feb-21 15:05:30

?

Elegran very funny ? - it reminded me of an encounter I had with a Glesca Granny overseas - I thought she was Serbian.

Elegran Sat 13-Feb-21 14:32:58

grin Sorry, Rufus, you are not quite up-to-date. That was pre-Brexit, English is not now so welcome. The official EU language is now to be Glesca, as in the video below.
