Why is a Jaffa Cake classed as a biscuit? It's made of sponge. Surely that makes it a cake.

People who say contra bute instead of con trib ute

Eloethan Sun 21-Feb-21 00:23:49

sellotape

People who chew noisily, or with their mouths hanging open, American ads (they are fine in America but here on U.K. tv I find them jarring), people who walk slowly in the middle of the path, Gosh a lot of things annoy me hmm

Mollygo Sun 21-Feb-21 00:03:51

The chemist who delivered DH’s medicines, but not mine. To be fair DH doesn’t know why that happened.

Grandma70s Sat 20-Feb-21 21:51:42

I am unapologetically annoyed by Americanisms - REEsearch being one, ‘normalcy’ another, and ‘stay home’ makes me cringe every time I hear or read it. Stay AT home is the English idiom.

NotTooOld Fri 19-Feb-21 22:20:08

People who say or write 'normalcy' instead of 'normality'. Grr.

Mollygo Fri 19-Feb-21 20:51:09

And move on to advertise and advertisement?

Aveline Fri 19-Feb-21 20:39:06

Sorry I just carried out research rather than read about it in dictionaries.
Discuss export and export as a noun and a verb.

Witzend Fri 19-Feb-21 20:24:15

Aveline, I just checked in my very big fat Oxford dictionary. which tells me that REsearch - whether noun or verb - is the American pronunciation, which is (unfortunately IMO ) becoming more common in the UK and is now generally accepted.

grandmajet Fri 19-Feb-21 20:10:05

Yes, Jacky you’re right. I’d love to win it tho, whatever they call it! I love that show.

JackyB Fri 19-Feb-21 19:56:45

Why do they refer to the suitcase prize on House of Games as "Luggage"?

Surely it's not luggage until it's got something in it?

MissAdventure Fri 19-Feb-21 18:04:48

Yeah, no. I agree. grin

Aveline Fri 19-Feb-21 17:05:28

readsalot- people that criticise other people's grammar.

readsalot Fri 19-Feb-21 16:57:12

Aveline

People that criticise other people's speech!

People WHO criticise other people's speech.

grannypiper Fri 19-Feb-21 16:26:43

Canadian Gran That photo sets my teeth on edge, i could not settle if my switches were like that.

Mollygo Fri 19-Feb-21 15:54:03

CanadianGran sorry, I deliberately have our row of three switches hall, porch, stairs up/down/up. I’ve even been known to make an extra trip upstairs to put that right!?
Aveline you saved me a post. Thanks.
Sodapop the hotel showers are often a nightmare. I used to send DH in first to get it right.
My pet hates:
Being the person who doesn’t get the solid chocolate fingers in a Kit Kat, especially when I had first choice of biscuit.
Also people who carry on reiterating that they, and only they, are right, even when you’ve given up the discussion.

MissAdventure Fri 19-Feb-21 15:48:08

It's a source of annoyance for me that not only are a lot of the light switches upside down, they are in the wrong place, compounded by the doors opening the wrong way round!

Aveline Fri 19-Feb-21 15:46:54

Canadiangran- I agree that I prefer both switches to be either up or down but for me it's down for on and up for off!

V3ra Fri 19-Feb-21 15:44:55

Canadian Gran I've just asked my husband "what is wrong?" on your photo.
Straightaway he said what you've complained about ?

grannypiper Fri 19-Feb-21 15:40:35

Checkout staff that pick my very fragile and expensive Gluten free loaf up by the middle AAGGHHH use the ruddy long piece of wrapper at the end !

Aveline Fri 19-Feb-21 15:39:49

Witzend- re research/researching - pronunciation depends on whether that word is being used as a noun or a verb.
Ie my reesearch is into X or Y
But I'm re search ing X or Y.
I know I'm being pedantic but I only discovered this relatively recently!

MissAdventure Fri 19-Feb-21 15:22:52

My daughter and me found that people hereabouts (including us!) say "yeah, no" all the time.
No idea why.

Nannagarra Fri 19-Feb-21 15:12:06

People who begin answers with, ‘Yes, no....” (which is it???); the frequently use of ‘ visceral’, ‘nuanced’ and ‘heads up’; the BBC using two subjects and a singular verb.

Witzend Fri 19-Feb-21 10:55:25

People saying REEsearch instead of reSEARCH.

eazybee Fri 19-Feb-21 10:52:42

Buying something new, usually electrical, and finding the instructions are printed in fourteen different languages in very small print.
