Grany that must be because right or wrong, not many are interested, plus, having looked at some of the sources you post I'd say a lot of the information on this is of dubious origin. What most people are doing here is chewing the fat and gossiping to pass the time. The issues you are concerned about are geopolitical, sociopolitical and human rights issues. A different ballgame. I'm not telling you where or what to post but suspect you wont get much traction here tbh.

Peasblossom I think you're talking a lot of sense there. One of the reasons I think people feel the antipathy they do is that as a couple, outside the RF they just aren't very compelling in their own right.

The Queen and current 'working RF' at least have mystique. Outside of that you need charisma - H&M as an entity have the charisma of any other run of the mill reality TV stars. People that people just love to hate.

They are still his family though. The Queen is still his grandmother, Charles his father, William his brother - and always will be. They are blood relatives.

And the idea of members of the royal family trading on their connections to make money is repulsive to me. I’m surprised it isn’t to some others. Edward and Sophie were stopped immediately when that happened, and The Duchess of York. Quite right too in my opinion. Other members of the royal family work for a living, even Princess Anne who combines running her farm with royal duties. Her children earn their own living, so do the York girls. None of them trade on the royal family. Meghan and Harry doing this is repugnant.

It is the wilful refusal of MH supporters to accept that the reason for the dislike and disapproval of M&H is that although they have left Britain and the royal family of their own volition they trade on their royal links to make money, and Won't Shut Up. If they did, there would be no adverse publicity.
I form my opinion based on their actions; I don't watch any of the interviews or read the gutter press, and it was a pleasure to listen to the BBC news this morning without any update on their activities.

Absolutely true. They must crave publicity, otherwise they wouldn’t be constantly in the news. They need the ‘toxic’ press as much as they need air to breathe it would appear. I mean why would Harry do the James C interview? What for? He must have wanted the publicity. But he wanted to get away from the ‘toxic’ publicity and ‘toxic’ Britain. It simply doesn’t make sense.

Plus many, many celebrities and people with money, earned or inherited, both give to charity regularly, and quietly work behind the scenes doing charitable work. Hugh Bonneville is a case in point. He volunteered to work helping with the vaccination programme. He was only outed because someone recognised him and told the press, so they descended on him. A quick interview and it was over. He didn’t tell us whether or not he had a waffle for breakfast. He said why he had volunteered. He thought it was something he could do to help. No fanfare, and if a member of the public hadn’t spotted him, we would be unaware.

The thing is, whether people like it or not, the present Queen has a kind of mystique about her. Even Harry, who was brought up in that environment, was a bit “Oh I talked to the Queen” as if the connection conferred something upon him.

I can’t see Charles having the same conferred mystique for there to be something newsworthy in the connection. And I think, sadly, when Williambecomes King there will be no connection at all.

Well, it’s still early days. Sophie’s been around a long time.

Like I said before, once they’ve done the tell all interview and the new baby, there won’t really be anything of interest except what they now make for themselves.

Everything becomes old news in the end and people lose interest. So I expect they will have to generate publicity, but the extent to which it comes from their connection to the royal family will diminish. It will have to be about them as they are.

I hardly think they don’t shut up. Oprah may turn out to be misguided but almost everything I have seen written about them in the last year is via a long lens as they are trying to go about their daily business. The press reports on their private activities far more than they put themselves forwards.

I suspect the reason that Sophie has managed to be absorbed fairly painlessly into the RF is because the press aren’t remotely interested in her.

She is an actress and what actresses want and need is publicity. She loves it but only on her terms.

trisher I hope you know by now that I have a lot of respect for the bulk of your opinions and arguments on GN, I can and do support many, but unfortunately not this one. I suppose the only thing I can add to what I've already said is that she married into a 1200 year old institution - there can be no serious misapprehension of what that meant. Second, this is the real world, it changes slowly, the acceptance they want is a level of actualisation that people need time to catch up to. If they saw others as clearly and inclusively as they see themselves they might have walked the middle ground and got more of what they claim they want. Isn't all of life better lived with a bit of give and take? (but not give what you want and take what you want - give what is required of you and take what you need).

I don't think America is fundamentally as different toward these principles as we like to think.

Bottom line though, whatever you and I think is fair or not fair the received wisdom of the RF would have in many ways protected them. That it may well be an outdated institution in need of change is moot - two people who self confess to vulnerability cannot hope to effect that change without courting objection. Can they withstand it? Or will any subsequent failure be everybody else's fault too? I think they are their own worst enemies.

If you court public attention it follows that you will tried in the court of public opinion - they can't have one without the other and to try and manipulate it is both astonishingly naive and astonishingly arrogant. Personally I have absolute sympathy with their reasons for stepping back, I can't dispute that the press has been vile and that much of it was trite and deeply unfair - I'm not sure that some of it shouldn't have been expected though. Their lack of self awareness is gobsmacking, and unfortunately they now both come across to me as whiny, self serving and massively disingenuous. It's my gut instinct and my life experience that inform that view, not the press. I wouldn't line my cat's litter tray with any of today's papers and consider voluntarily watching or listening to the likes of Piers Morgan and co as an act of vicious self harm. Consequently I feel my opinion holds as much water as anyone else's and has not been falsely manipulated by the media. It is now at the stage that the biggest act of service H&M could perform is to solidly and succinctly bugger off!.

That assumes NellG that the court of public opinion is something that reaches a verdict that is actually unanimous. In fact there is actually a real bias in the UK and a completely different attitude in the US where the couple are regarded as escaping the same British establishment as his mother did. The interview with Corden and the remark that it was "toxic"are headlined.
Personally I think they have a right to control their own lives. If they wish to maintain their charitable pursuits (and they are there) they need to maintain a public persona. Why they should have to surrender control of that to the RF I don't understand, or why they shouldn't maintain a public front and a reasonable amount of privacy if they so choose.

I do find most of the comments relating to Meghan misogynistic bullshit though - and very much of narrative that she is getting ahead of herself as a female, American & with a non-typical (for a member of the RF) family. If you don’t notice that then fine. But I can see why she couldn’t tolerate it.

I've been thinking about this, this morning - not much more to do unless I join Sarah in the garden, it is the everyday misogyny isn't it that is so ingrained people often don't even realise it is happening. I was thinking about Captain Tom and how his daughter has been commented on, how 'she loves the attention' etc and how the daughter was judged for how she behaved and reacted. WHY? why does anyone at all have to comment on Captain Tom's daughter?

It's like when you have a child (especially a disabled one) the Mum is always judged as to how she is or isn't coping. The Dad is always marvellous, a hero in fact if he sticks around for one that requires more work I'm a bit fed up of it
