I think I will hang on to the nice bit which said that they will always be a much loved members of the family.

I just like people-any people- to be true, to have integrity.

I find the “green” better world lectures really irritating -from anyone- when combined with a lifestyle that completely contradicts the lecture.

On the contrary. There is nothing stopping an actor going into politics and several have, whereas Rule No 1 of being royal is No Politics.

There's nothing wrong with them saying it, there was just no need to.

I'd prefer it if they'd do us all a service and go off and be of service elsewhere - quietly and with some dignity and discretion.

At least by keeping 'his head down' PA is mitigating any further embarrassment to the Royal Family, whereas H & M seem to be doing the opposite.

An interview with Oprah is what many aspire too. Often regarded as the one that brings the maximum publicity; as high as they can go, or as low depending on your point of view.

Regardless of what the interview reveals, perhaps the Royal family will have a collective sight of relief once it's been aired and the ensuing publicity dies down.

Anything else they have to say surely will be 'old news' as it's all been spoken about, and hopefully any future disclosures will be infrequent and less publicised.

Specifically on the OP question I think that a difference is seen between "service" and philanthropy". So Bill Gates has made millions from his business and uses that ohilantgropically to develop projects, donate to charity etc. Service is seen more as serving others without personal financial gain, either prior to or whilst serving. Technically the RF dont financially gain directly from their lives being "devoted to public service"! (But ofcourse there is another whole discussion (on another thread I would say) about their personal financial gain from an accident of birth!

Anyway, I think the above explanation us the gist if what the hoo ha is about!

Think the view is that Royal duty is just that, duty implies obligations rather than choice. H&M statement that "service is universal" could be viewed as a snub as it implies that there is no difference between choosing to carry out work that benefits others and carrying out that work because you feel it is your duty to do so. One is of your own free will the other is a willingness to sacrifice free for the good of others

I couldn’t really care less about H&M & the less I hear about them the better, but I think the royal family distinguish between royal service and public service.
H&M saying they could serve just as well outside the RF was therefore interpreted as a snub of the ‘up yours’ variety, for want of a better expression.
