Following on from the thread about actors - which singers do you think are over rated?

For me it has to be Sting - all his songs sound the same and he just sings the same words over and over again.

Paul is wonderful. He is so down to earth. I used to live very near him. He was so friendly and always had time for a real conversation. He is a real family man and a great grandad. He is just so normal no airs and Grace's.

Over rated
Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Jamie Cullum, Madonna, Abba....yuk

Love Bob Dylan, his voice has changed so much over the years!

Kylie

Stones
Celine
David Bowie

MayBee70 totally agree with you about Tom Jones. There are so many singers who were good in their day, but age has sadly demolished the voice they had, but there are still a few that have retained the powerful voice - Tom Jones and Dolly Parton for example

I don't rate Alfie Boe.I've heard a lot better than him, though they may not be as succesful as he is

Tom Jones - whether you like him or not he has the most powerful voice of all of them, and is still going strong so is not overrated.

Bee Gees - love them all and their distinctive style of singing. And what a catalogue of great songs, both for themselves and others. I won't hear a word against them!

Robbie Williams - may have sung a few nice songs but is far too up himself is and definitely overrated!

Accoustics!

Elton John. Went to a concert of his about 15 years ago. Miserable old goat sat behind his piano and didn’t move once. The account is were terrible and it all sounded like a continuous hum. Fell asleep and my daughter had to keep waking me as I was snoring! grin

Gramps47 Thu 25-Feb-21 12:33:33

Dare I say Cliff? Not his music, just his ‘Aren’t I wonderful’ approach.

Love this thread and a bit shocked how many famous singers are loathed, it’s a real eye opener! I had no idea..
I have never understood the Judy Garland mania and cannot bear Somewhere over the Rainbow.

Kate1949 Thu 25-Feb-21 12:23:11

We watched the new Bee Gees documentary the other day. I didn't realise what a lovely melodic voice Robin Gibb had.

Alioop Thu 25-Feb-21 12:21:21

Cilla, Kate Bush the list could go on, but I really can't understand the love for Robbie Williams. He's a terrible singer and he's so cocky with it. All he does he throw the mike out to the crowd at concerts to sing for him. Awful.
George Michael had the most gorgeous voice, adore his music.

grandmajet Thu 25-Feb-21 12:18:07

Leonard Cohen. Don’t listen to him if you’re a bit low, he’ll finish you off!

Florida12 Thu 25-Feb-21 12:13:51

Celine Dion,
Mariah Carey (squawk fest)
Frank Sinatra
Cilla Black

I have to stick up for poor Barry Gibb. Yes, he warbles but at least there's some emotion in it and he has written some fantastic songs over the years.

Juneandarchie1 Thu 25-Feb-21 12:05:26

I have been to many live concerts during my life and I can safely say Rod Stewart was the worst.
Other end of the scale, Freddie Mercury was the best ?

MayBee70 Thu 25-Feb-21 11:56:57

I know what you mean about Tom Jones. However, to me there are two Tom Jones and I do actually like the one that reincarnated himself by letting his hair go grey and started singing different kinds of songs. I think his son influenced him at the time.

Quizzer Thu 25-Feb-21 11:45:21

I am prepared to get shot down, but I have never been able to stand Tom Jones. His voice does nothing for me and physically he gives me the creeps!!

lizzypopbottle Thu 25-Feb-21 11:44:35

I agree about the warblers and screechers. Most Fridays, before lockdown, I would do my Sainsbury's shopping and then meet a friend for coffee in the shop's cafe. The (apparently obligatory) 'music' would be playing at a volume just loud enough to be irritating and would usually be a female droner or screecher. Once I noticed it, I couldn't not hear it. There never seemed to be a break between tracks. It must be awful to work there.

57VRS Thu 25-Feb-21 11:43:46

New one on the list - Kathryn Jenkins!!! Cant stand the warbleyness of it. In fact any oprea singer who warbles on the long notes!!

Annaram1 Thu 25-Feb-21 11:42:53

Robbie Williams. Don't like his voice and attitude and he is ugly as well.

Camelotclub Thu 25-Feb-21 11:42:10

Ed Sheeran, when he starts to rap it's toe-curlingly embarrassing. A white, red-haired rural boy trying to sound like he's from East LA (or somewhere)!

For me it has to be Sting - all his songs sound the same and he just sings the same words over and over again.

All of them.
The ability to record and replay your voice has given singers a licence to print money for doing no work.
Such is the way of the world with som many things and it is the world's greatest harm; collecting money for doing nothing.

Jennyluck Thu 25-Feb-21 11:34:15

Love Sam Smith. ??
Adele has a good voice but very overrated.
Overrated for me are cold play, just don’t get it. Such dreary songs.
Beyoncé, James Arthur, Kylie, oh and rappers. Awful. Cheryl, someone obviously likes her, because she gets lots of opportunities. Pretty girl with a poor voice.

Forgot - Maddona! What's all the fuss about a pretty average pop singer?confused

Because she knows how to grab publicity, always trying to shock and the public fall for it.
