Following on from the thread about actors - which singers do you think are over rated?

For me it has to be Sting - all his songs sound the same and he just sings the same words over and over again.

Most rap singers. I’m quite open minded, but their lyrics are often just vile. Completely utterly disgusting. The female ones are just as bad. Nicki Minaj. She’s awful - have you listened to the lyrics?

I love listening to Dusty Springfield and Rod Stewart and looking at David Essex!

Anybody like Celine Dion? Dionne?

Not my cup of tea at all.

Someone said earlier they don't like Cilla Black, but I quite enjoy her voice.

I was watching Amy Winehouse singing acoustically earlier this evening. Such talent. Eating disorder did her in tho.

Kylie. Nope.
I don't like songs with choruses of "la la la, la la la la la, la la la...."

Oh no: I feel an ear worm coming on.....shock

Joan Baez - her voice is excruciating!

Katherine Jenkins, Lesley Garrett, Frank Sinatra

I loved watching Amy in her heyday.
She had 'it' for me.

NotTooOld Wed 24-Feb-21 21:58:51

I quite like Lily Allen - but not for too long. Also like Sam Brown, daughter of Joe. Can't stand any of those rap singers though. I thought Amy Winehouse had a fantastic voice. I don't much like Tom Jones.

GagaJo Wed 24-Feb-21 21:27:59

Oh yes, REALLY never liked Whitney Houston. But I also love Joan Armatrading. Saw her live once and she was great.

CherryCezzy Wed 24-Feb-21 21:16:57

I can think of lots. Adele, Rhianna, katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lily Allen -all awful. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston are overrated too. As for male singers I'd say Ronan Keating, Robbie Williams, Sam Smith and Gary Barlow are all dreadful. There are many more besides.

I agreed that Adele has a great voice, but she can’t sing words, just noises.
Louis Armstrong is another unconventional singer who is lovely to listen to. He gives me goose bumps.
GagaJo! Queen are fantastic!

Also David Bowie, never got him. I couldn't understand the sainthood of John Lennon, much as I loved the Beatles. He was a constituent part of their talent rather than the main star.

LullyDully Wed 24-Feb-21 19:53:34

Carol Carpenter. She always sounded too mechanical.

GagaJo Wed 24-Feb-21 19:49:42

I am not a huge Adele fan, but her first hit was 2008, so she has been going for a while.

I loved Kate Bush.

I never liked the Carpenters. Not a Bowie fan either. And as for Queen, they leave me cold. As for Paul McCartney, he is unfortunately past it.

I love a bit of Oasis though, and Blur too.

Grandmadinosaur Wed 24-Feb-21 19:22:31

I couldn’t understand the popularity of Kate Bush.

MissAdventure Wed 24-Feb-21 19:19:07

Kylie. Nope.
I don't like songs with choruses of "la la la, la la la la la, la la la...."

Sara1954 Wed 24-Feb-21 19:18:01

Lulu definitely, also Cilla Black, just awful.
I agree some of the old favourites have had it, especially the love of my life, Paul McCartney

Curlywhirly Wed 24-Feb-21 19:03:25

I too can't bear Kylie - her voice sounds like a cartoon character's. Also, don't like the female singers who shout instead of sing, infact I'm not keen on many female singers, much prefer to listen to males. Having said that, think Paul McCartney and Elton John are well past their best and need to call it a day ?

MerylStreep Wed 24-Feb-21 18:58:15

I won't be having a funeral but friends and family will get together ( to talk about me?) and there they will play one of my favourite songs: Bob Dylan. Positively 4th Street.

MissAdventure Wed 24-Feb-21 18:46:48

I tend to prefer great lyrics, sung in an earnest way, rather than a load of inconsequential (to me) dross. smile

MayBee70 Wed 24-Feb-21 18:39:05

I used to love Hole. I remember someone once saying of Courtney Love, she's a lousy singer but a great vocalist. Probably sums up Dylan, too.

I think being a good singer is about more than being able to reach notes.
I can't bear warbler like Mariah Carey et al.

I find it utterly souless and have to turn it off.
When one word ends up 6 syllables long... just awful.

My first thought was Mariah Carey!
