Has anyone got a different perspective after watching last evenings interview?
I am be really interested to hear if any of you feel more or less pro the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

They had the courage to speak truth to power and to the public, which is enough to make anyone nervous and uncomfortable. Now it's done. And the backlash is telling.

Only the children and grandchildren of the Sovereign (the Queen) get HRH and are princes/princesses. None of the other great grandchildren have these titles, apart from George, Charlotte and Louis as they will eventually be the children of the Sovereign. There is no way this was a snub to Archie or the Sussexes. Harry should have known this. Archie will become a Prince when Charles becomes King.

I don't agree about "most of America" being on their side, 17 million who actually saw the programme out of 320 million doesn't constitute most as a percentage. I believe the majority of that country don't give a flying f* about Meghan and Harry as they are merely trying to keep their heads above water at one of the most difficult times the world has experienced since World War 2. Just why would the average person care about two people carping on about how hard life was when they were just getting by on his 20 million pound inheritance. Particularly if you happen to be amongst the vast majority, who can't pay your bills or put food on the table or afford to see a doctor. A few mouthy rich celebrities and commentators don't make up the majority, they just shout the loudest, and I can't help thinking of Rick Gervais' apt comments at the Golden Globes when he addressed such an audience made up of those types, "you have no idea how most people live"

I think Harry comes across as weak and the way he's thrown his family under the bus is pretty horrible. Even the best of families have difficulties in the way dynamics play out, I know I have at times in my life, but these are private matters. No one knows what goes on behind closed doors, there are usually two sides to family disagreement and arguments, but the way it was presented has made it pretty hard for the Palace to have any comeback without appearing vindictive.

He has left an enormous question in most minds as to who made the comments about Archie's prospective skin colour before he was born and inviting speculation and finger pointing and possibly unfair criticism to rain down on them. In any event is it fair to take any conversation out of context and put it out in the public domain. Incidentally, I thought that issue was discussed with Oprah prior to the interview so her jaw dropping "I'm sorry" response to it when it was raised comes across as pretty disingenuous under the circumstances. All part of the faux over dramatisation complete with musical interludes to heighten the pathos hmm Along with the photo released in the aftermath of the programme, of the three of them in the garden. Why was that released now and not before with the other one, can't help thinking there was a bit of a "look at us in our happy ever after bliss so two fingers to you lot" All in all it came across as a pretty sycophantic exercise.

There is a difference as to how British and Americans look at things and nothing exemplifies that more than their television productions, I remember when I first went to the US wondering how they could find such wall to wall everyday shite at all palatable, but of that standard run of the mill, not their exceptional productions, is standard fare there.

I am now just a little suspicious of them. Can't explain. Just vibes. I sincerely hope the RF does not respond in any shape or form.
That goes for me too Kim19.
The OP has made the post a bit divisive by asking for "opinions" in the title and "feelings" in the opening comment. Some of us will speak from the heart, others are more cerebral. Neither is right nor wrong, and GNs were bound to clash.

Nonnie : There is nothing wrong with a bi-racial couple discussing who their child will take after and what colour eyes, hair etc, will be. They will be excited to be expecting a baby and will discuss all that.
What is not acceptable is to have a family member comment
on how dark the baby may be. If that family member asks can they have that conversation with the couple as they are interested then maybe but it is most unusual and to even be questioning an unborn childs darkness of skin is rude and racist.

No, I haven't. I've always felt sorry for them. The Royal Family used Diana as a broodmare; refused support to Sarah Ferguson when she was having so much trouble coping with her role while her husband was posted away from home for months, and have proven to be racist and elitist time and time again. Charles used his influence to stop people on the Duchy estate being allowed to buy the houses they lived in; the Queen has used archaic laws to hide her wealth from the public and she has recently - and shamefully in my opinion - had tax on her shooting estate at Balmoral reduced to less than the local businesses pay, and Philip has frequently committed ghastly gaffes like his "slitty-eyed" comments about the Chinese. They're toxic, and I'm so glad Harry's eyes have been at least partially opened to that fact. I find I also despise the Queen even more for allowing Harry & Meghan's security to be removed - Harry didn't ask to be born into his position but it definitely does lend itself to dangers. I think the Queen should have personally financed security for them if that was the only way to continue it. And as for refusing Harry & Meghan's children titles as is the norm, what else but racism does that smack of? Petty, over-indulged, parasites. I wish Meghan and Harry a very happy future shot of all of them.

icanhandthemback Tue 09-Mar-21 13:00:49

Alegrias1, I'm with you. It is clear that many on here just do not understand about racism or mental health issues. I wonder how many white people ask a pregnant white woman whether her baby will be pale skinned or have a ruddy complexion!
When you look at all the little pleasures we have in life like just nipping to a friend's, taking a walk wherever we want, taking a drive out, etc, going on an open topped bus, we are all privileged but in different ways to the RF. With your husband away, a young baby to care for and hormones working overtime, you can't even pop out because you are over-exposed in the press. Even as a celebrity you don't suffer this in quite the same way. I can quite understand how an American Celebrity can be totally unprepared for the restrictions on their life. Just think about the way we complain about lockdown and then imagine it for life. Then add in the vicious social media, the press and racism. No wonder she struggled.
Harry is quite rightly putting his wife and family first. Not even the Queen should ask him to do any different.

It is easy to talk about 'doing something '
Doing it 'has to be on the part of those who want it bad enough to get out and do something about it.'

Coco51 Tue 09-Mar-21 12:58:37

Princess Anne’s children are not Prince and Princess and they are direct grandchildren, not great grandchildren.

Nonnie Tue 09-Mar-21 12:57:00

trisher

Most Americans are supporting Meghan. Partly because they are much more aware of racial bias than we Brits are and partly because it's an American girl and Diana's son, she was always popular over there. I think the continuing bile and hate being producedby the British media will just serve to widen the gap. I think both of them are well out of it and the place they are living looks lovely.

I know two young couples who have pretty much the same racial mix as H & M and both discussed what colour their child might be, alongside eye colour, hair colour and all the other variables discussed prior to the birth of their baby. One has a 7 month old and the other a 3 month old. There is nothing racist about it.

3nanny6 Tue 09-Mar-21 12:52:03

One correction he said GC as I did not know if it was a boy or girl at the time.

LondonMzFitz Tue 09-Mar-21 12:51:03

I don't know what other posters here are seeing, but when they married I saw a young couple excited about being part of a family with an expectation of being used and useful as part of that family and getting shut down / shut out by the Establishment.

For me, the most shocking comment was from Harry saying his father doesn't take his calls. My God, what father does that? I always thought Charles a coward, why would you not take your sons calls when you know how much pain he must be in, when you have a grandson in another country, with all that is going on in the world right now.

My facebook was full of nasty, snide comments last night - from "friends" who are mid-50's to mid-60's. Why do women feel this need to take down other women?

Kim19 Tue 09-Mar-21 12:50:39

Had a very open mind to the pair of them but, having watched that boring show from start to finish, I am now just a little suspicious of them. Can't explain. Just vibes. I sincerely hope the RF does not respond in any shape or form.

3nanny6 Tue 09-Mar-21 12:43:38

I did watch even though I was not going to I was just interested
in what they may have to say. I have still not made my mind up
what should happen next. IMO so many of the posts on here have condemned H and M and are accounting blame hate and
even vile comments towards them.
I read a post saying the palace cannot fight back but they can even though they have remained silent as yet, they will issue some kind of statement as they know the British public are waiting and looking to someone in the RF to take the lead and offer some sort of answers to what many of us
watched on the T.V.
I found nothing shocked me with their interview but like Oprah the comments on what skin tone or how dark will the baby be certainly is something that could have been said. Even if it was said to H it was not wrong for him to tell his wife after all it affects her as well as him.
I am an older woman now but have mixed race children and when pregnant with my first child a family member
made comments to me about how dark my child may be.
I went to my own father and told him and he called this family member out and said they would not be welcome to come to his home again, he said he was waiting the arrival of his GD and nobody makes comments like that as long as he is around.
So any posters who think this does not happen or even worse thinks it is funny or just lets brush it under the carpet because racism does not exist think again.

Urmstongran Tue 09-Mar-21 12:43:21

The reason why Meghan was criticised over avacodos and not Kate is because Meghan has set herself up as a save the planet environmental champion whilst flying around the world in private jets!

Kate has the sense to keep her mouth shut as it looks ridiculous when you live an extravagant lifestyle and preach.

Daisend1 Tue 09-Mar-21 12:42:02

This was the 'Meghan and Harry Show'.
Isn't /wasn't 'entertainment' Meghan's 'occupation'.
What did they hope to achieve? I cannot for one moment believe their grievances /racism /felt they had been done an injustice could not have been dealt with prior to this TV show There are those willing to listen to a cry for help/injustice Is this not what the Sussex's advise others? Who ever /whatever you are. No one is above help.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 09-Mar-21 12:39:55

Racism is the real story here, but it is so convenient to ignore that truth and tear into the woman at the receiving end because she has the temerity to talk about it.

merlotgran Tue 09-Mar-21 12:37:18

Are we allowed to speculate about the identity of who made the comment about skin colour?

We could run a sweepstake.....grin

DillytheGardener Tue 09-Mar-21 12:35:15

Putting head behind the parapet now hmm

DillytheGardener Tue 09-Mar-21 12:34:42

Well said alegrias1

“How is one "excessively" racist? Is it OK if we're just a little bit racist? Is it OK if we're just racist towards some people? Who decides?

Ah well, mixed race couples on the TV. We're all fine then, nothing for us to worry about.”

Exactly and given the fury about the black family on the Sainsbury’s advert (with criticism from gransnetters too) you can hardly say the U.K isn’t racist.

GreyKnitter Tue 09-Mar-21 12:33:57

I didn’t see the interview and don’t plan to watch, but it’s impossible to avoid all the stuff on social media, on tv and in the press. If I’m being generous I might think that she really didn’t know what to expect when she married into the royal family and what the public expectation of her would be. I agree that there probably was some racism involved as in many families.
Before my granddaughter was born we speculated about her hair colour, eye colour, who she would take after in her looks. When she was born with light ginger hair - none in the family - and very pale skin and green eyes, (totally unexpected!) we loved her for being different. I’m sure all families have those kind of conversations before a new baby is born.

Lucca Tue 09-Mar-21 12:30:17

Aveline

*merlotgran*- 'guff'. Spot on!

Aveline, sorry to ask again but can you explain what conclusions you drew from the photos of Diana and Meghan wearing similar outfits ?

Alegrias1 Tue 09-Mar-21 12:27:51

Re the "colour" of the baby/babies - Meghan wasn't party to those conversation(s). Harry clarified that it had been spoken of before the pregnancy, and during the pregnancy. I don't know if Meghan knew that it was spoken about before - maybe Harry hadn't told her, not wanting to upset her. But as a woman of colour she would most certainly have been disturbed by that conversation. Remember please, she is the daughter of a white man and a black woman, so the colour of her skin discussions are probably not new to her, but this is the Establishment talking about her unborn child - any mother would have their protective hackles raised, surely?

The name of the person hasn't been said, and in order to heal the family it shouldn't be. Speculate all you like, anyone with a bit of sense / sensitivity wouldn't have made the comment, anyone with a bit of worldly knowledge wouldn't have said it, anyone with a reasonable education wouldn't have said it.

You ask a white woman about a race issue you will get a different answer than if you ask a woman of colour, it is that simple.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 09-Mar-21 12:22:58

I see Morgan walked out of the morning show, because a mixed race working colleague disagreed with Morgan’s stance over the interview with the Mountbatten Windsor’s.

He can dish hate out but he can’t take the mildest of criticism. Sad little man.
