I genuinely don't think that the UK is excessively racist. You only have to look at the tv programmes where there are mixed race couples and the tv adverts that have mixed race families. In the past American tv wouldn't have mixed race couples - although that has now changed America is much more racist than us.
There's an old documentary series which is occasionally repeated, about African American blues musicians who toured the UK. They were amazed (and pleased) at the reaction they got from white audiences and also that there was no segregation in hotels and restaurants.
The outrage in America seems to be mainly from the actors and starts in LA - they are forgetting that racism is far worse in their country than it is in the UK.
