There was less traffic which allowed us to play games in the street without risking our lives. A big field behind our house and an unused area of my granny's garden gave us scope to run wild and play cowboys and Indians, climb trees and pick blackberries. And there was the beach, five minutes away - within shouting distance for the louder mums - not mine! I walked to school until I was 11 when I was allowed to cycle. My GC have always walked to school. Now the older teenagers are motorised - motor bike and moped. A few of us came back from Guides by bus as far as the chip shop where we each spent 4d on a bag of chips.
What is our role as older people?
