I didn't want this to be all negatives and be accused of being a traitor , but following on from the ongoing chats I wondered what you like AND dislike about modern Britain. Its a given some love/some hate the government and its policies, so wanted to avoid that - here's my very non comprehensive non political list
Likes -
Diversity of cities
wild countryside in Scotland and its islands
Theatre, arts, literature
Free museums and galleries
Ability to satirise anything you like
Dislikes - Dog poo on pavements or bags hanging from trees
Few convictions for animal cruelty
Football fans drunkenly causing mayhem on match days or drunken Brits in foreign resorts
fly tipping
polluted rivers - nothing done about it
children being forced to learn obscure grammar

Quite a few of the things that you mention are political though. I'm not saying they are not good choices, just that they are not non political.

I would dispute the one about polluted rivers. A lot of time and effort has gone into making them very much cleaner than they were, evidenced by the diverse species of fish now. We have now have brown trout and even salmon in post industrial rivers that were open sewers when I was growing up. And the work goes on.
I would add:
The “right to roam” - a hard won freedom to access some of the most beautiful areas of Britain;
Following on from that, our National Parks;
The still tangible evidences of our long and chequered history;
Our tolerance as a nation (and no, I don’t say that with my tongue in my cheek) and sense of humour;
Our language (long may grammar be taught in schools) and wonderful theatrical tradition.
Dislikes:
Littering, which blights our cities and countryside; we seem to be the worst nation in Europe for chucking our rubbish on the ground, out of car windows, you name it!
Dog fouling which has got noticeably worse during the past twelve months.
Drunkenness in public places and the inevitable consequences.

Likes:-

Freedom of speech (which comes with great responsibility)

The ability to laugh at ourselves.

Theatre, ballet and our rich culture both inherited and new.

Our beaches and countryside.

No adverse weather conditions (tornadoes, major earthquakes etc)

Dislikes:-

Litter in all guises.

Rudeness.

Pre-Covid the constant rush/constantly fighting time.

Hearing parents shout and swear at their children along with men/women shouting abusing men/women in public, it makes me wonder what else happens behind doors.

Like:
Living in a nation of gardeners
The seasons
English show cockers and generally being animal lovers
County shows and the Royal Welsh
English pubs with darts, pub quizzes, singing etc.
Dislike:
The moaning!
People not caring about the environment
Brits who behave badly on holiday abroad
Such a high proportion of the population apparently making no effort with their appearance, wearing shapeless and ugly clothes - wish we were more like the Italians in that respect

The whole change in society. It's not nice. There's not the equality that there used to be in the 50's sad

Lighthouses, fish and chips, crumpets, Wensleydale cheese, Welsh butter, Ecclefechan tart, cliffs, beaches, national parks, Highland cattle, Tamworth pigs, moors, dales, Jarl beer, castles and cottages.

French Politics was drummed into us at school with stress on Liberty, Equality, Fraternity. I think Auriol ? was President then

i dislike the state of state education, it seems to be all cramming with obscure and useless facts of byzantine grammar, with no object beyond passing exams, league tables.
where is creativity, expression, poetry for the sheer sound, exuberance, mystery of it, rather than pulling apart and naming of parts.
i also dislike snobbishness, but that is more english than british.
i like british understatement, self-deprecating humour, sense of fairplay. and public rights of way, unknown in other countries.

EllanVannin Thu 25-Mar-21 17:46:03

I even have Lurpak on my crumpets grin

I LOVE, not just like, some of our beaches. I spent all last summer, with my DGS on a mostly empty beach. It was bliss.

I like British dry humour.

I like the fact that so many of us are animal lovers.

I like some of our food. I think a lot of our reputation for bad food is undeserved.

I LOVE a lot of British writers.

I love and adore the worlds best writer, Shakespeare, who is English.

I like the range of cultures we have.

I like the fact that we are still lucky enough to have a reasonable climate, despite global warming, unlike some other parts of the world.

Don’t like - carpet in bathrooms, overcooked sprouts, disrespect for the elderly, increasing number of rough sleepers.

Gwyneth Thu 25-Mar-21 20:03:54

Like: the changing seasons, greenness of our countryside, national parks, dedicated animal charities.
Dislike: vandalism, increasing litter problem and lack of respect for our planet, puppy farms, people abandoning their pets, County lines (drugs)

BlueSky Thu 25-Mar-21 20:13:58

I agree with everything GagaJo said.
Dislike: The drink culture, people who consider getting drunk and disorderly a good night out.

GagaJo Thu 25-Mar-21 20:20:30

Oooooo yes, how green England is. When I came back to the UK from the US, the greenery was balm to my soul.
