Well my children are in their early twenties and I was talking about the big ship stuck in the Suez Canal. To which they all said "The what!" I just can't believe they've never heard of it

Oh yes, I forgot about those! Epping Forest was also very popular.

When DH was in the Met Police he knew all the local dogging places near Hampstead Heath.

i never noticed any there, too full of cottagers.
or are you making it an all-encompassing term.

TrendyNannie6 Sat 27-Mar-21 18:11:22

I think most probably a lot more on mumsnet would know the term A Pearl necklace, and yes I did know ?

I thought "dogging" was taking your pet for a walk.

i think originally that was the cover story, hence how it got that name.

I know someone, a woman in her 50s who had never heard of Suffragettes shock

I also heard someone say once, "so Catholics, they aren't Christians are they?"

grandmajet Sat 27-Mar-21 18:04:12

Oh dear! I’d tell her, she may say it in front of someone who is shocked.

kircubbin2000 Sat 27-Mar-21 17:41:57

Another friend, quite Christian,no nonsense type lady, ofter refers to annoying people as 'silly twats'. Should I tell her?

EllanVannin Sat 27-Mar-21 17:23:50

So many of our old words and phrases have double entendre's now that you have to think before you say anything.
I've no idea about the pearls though and haven't dared google.

MerylStreep Sat 27-Mar-21 17:16:18

Bloody ‘doggers’ have ruined a local nature reserve for those of us who want spent the night ( or 2) in our motohomes.

My lovely MIL went on a day trip and came back wearing a baseball cap with writing on it. We had to tell her it wasn’t actually another way of saying, “I love cats”. The teenage grandchildren thought it was really funny ?

kircubbin2000 Sat 27-Mar-21 16:52:43

Friend was going dogging?.
Another hadn't heard of Line of Duty or Katy Price.

kircubbin2000 Sat 27-Mar-21 16:51:05

I've only learnt this too. Saltire.

Marmight Sat 27-Mar-21 16:48:06

Google must be doing overtime. Ive been completely put off the mug of tea I’ve just made. I wonder who first introduced some of these crackers. They had to come from somewhere after all, teabags aren’t that old, unlike a merkin ?

Beechnut Sat 27-Mar-21 16:47:14

A member of my family has a “I love dogging mug”.

tiredoldwoman Sat 27-Mar-21 16:34:05

out in the woods the other day my grandbaby got stuck in the mud and had to be carried . Her mud heavy welly fell off so I stuck a branch in it and walked along singing and doing Jake the Peg . Everyone just stared .............

grandmajet Sat 27-Mar-21 16:33:20

I was walking down a quiet local lane with Grandpajet recently when I saw a couple ‘taking their dog for a walk’ in a car at the side of the road! ? ?

On Peter Kay's Car Share The passenger told him she was going 'dogging', which she though was taking her dog for a walk

BBbevan Sat 27-Mar-21 15:48:57

????? cheered me up no end this thread. But google has worked overtime .

Grandmajean Sat 27-Mar-21 15:46:34

Pearl necklace new to me too ! Have definitely talked about it in many situations. Don't remember any sniggering but wouldn't have realised anyway !

Susiewong65 Sat 27-Mar-21 15:18:05

I not allowed to refer to my under-stairs cupboard as my ‘glory hole’ either any more.

Blinko Sat 27-Mar-21 14:49:54

I googled tea bagging and ok, I get that. But no such luck with string of pearls. All I got was houseplants and Glenn Miller.....

Blinko Sat 27-Mar-21 14:21:25

Sorry don't get the HSBC banks reference? Am I being dim?
confused

It stands the Hong Kong and Shanghai banking corporation

A friend always refers to it as the Hong Kong and Shang Ri La bank...

grandmajet Sat 27-Mar-21 14:10:40

Well, Biscuitmuncher, you will be relieved to know that your username just means someone who spends a lot of time in meetings munching biscuits rather than doing anything useful. Nothing mucky at all!
