Hello Everyone!
Boring but Potentially Divisive Thread Alert

Do you wash brand new clothes?

There was a thread about this a while ago on MN.

Apparently, new clothes can actually be quite dirty and germy.

I've recently bought quite a few new dresses and I'm genuinely torn whether to wash them or not (I know; first world probs and all that).

Wash or not? ?

No way

I always wash new bras as I find them itchy if I don't but nothing else.

I would only wash if they looked grubby, were too stiff or smelled unpleasant. However I always steam iron them to kill any bugs or parasites. They usually need a press anyway.

Not usually depending on what the item is, once washed I always feel jumpers in particular lose that nice new look.

No, it never feels quite so new once it’s been washed ?

GrannyGear Mon 19-Apr-21 11:58:37

Only if I've bought them from a charity shop.

Trisha57 I wash underwear because of the the fabric finish on them makes me itch.

Me too, I use sensitive laundry detergent for most underwear.

Not...washed clothes never look as good as brand new ones no matter how carefully you do it. Most bacteria doesn't live long on fabrics so the worry about invisible dirt isn't a consideration for me. To be honest, there is bacteria everywhere and I'd go mad if I started to really think about it. I wonder how many people have been ill after wearing new clothes. If I had actually experienced that, I'd probably be more cautious.

It has never occurred to me. Baby clothes, bedding, towels to remove stiffness but otherwise, not. If I though too much about who had touched what/sat on a chair/used the same cutlery in a restaurant I would never step outside the door.

Always wash new jeans because of the dye rubbing off on sofas, etc

Franbern Mon 19-Apr-21 11:38:47

My goodness, Absolutely NO!!! Are people really so concerned as to how clean the people in the factories are? Surely not - anybody ever got any sort of illness from new clothes yet? Managed to get through eighty years without even thinking about such a thing.
Honestly, are some people really so scared about every little germ etc around. Tha way lies madness!!!!

No. And I think its a weird question to be honest.

Maybe you have not ever questioned it before , its the
chemical bit that bothers me the most, there's enough
of them in everything we do so if some can be elimanted
I'm all for it.

No I don’t except of course for towels to improve their absorbency.

However I do remember washing new baby clothes when I was expecting.

I can still remember the thrill and excitement of seeing all these tiny babygrows, nighties and nappies blowing on the line in the garden of our first home.

Eventually,

Blackcat3 Mon 19-Apr-21 11:32:00

No, never thought about it.....but I am now........!
Especially as I’ve heard of online (and high street) shoppers wearing items with the tags on...then returning them.....eeewwww!

Peff68 Mon 19-Apr-21 11:30:22

I haven’t before but I saw something on that too so I think I will from now on! Haven’t bought anything new in a year!

jaylucy Mon 19-Apr-21 11:29:55

Depends on what they are made from ! Items made from cotton I often wash before wear so they are softer.
Must admit that the idea of new clothes being dirty, I can fully understand - how many times have you been in a store and there are several items on the floor that have been knocked off the rail , either still on or off a hanger ?

Annaram1 Mon 19-Apr-21 11:29:52

GrannyNannyWanny, I think you may be on the wrong thread.

leeds22 Mon 19-Apr-21 11:29:02

Wash new knickers but nothing else, I like the newness of them. Sadly anything new I’ve bought in the last year is still unworn apart from a dress I’ve worn once and a Celtic sweater that I’ve loved wearing.

Candelle Mon 19-Apr-21 11:28:44

Yup, I always wash new clothes (with the exception of coats which would require dry cleaning - I don't bother with that).

If you can think back to the 'oldun' days when we went to a shop and tried on clothes in fitting rooms (a long long time ago...), did you ever accidentally drop something on the floor? Yuck! Many fitting rooms were absolutely filthy and some shoppers will have just dropped garments on to the floor whilst making their selections.

I am not writing of a little backstreet store but major retailers - always dust and fluff on the floor, so yes, I wash new clothes.

As to mail order (the new 'ordinary'), I also wash those as they may well have been in someone else's home before they reached mine and the same applies as to fitting rooms. Just don't know where they have been/who they have been on!

Annaram1 Mon 19-Apr-21 11:28:15

No. And I think its a weird question to be honest.

TillyWhiz Mon 19-Apr-21 11:27:10

Yes I always have. They may be packaged but they have had a lot of handling and I understand they are coated with a preservative. I have sensitive skin so avoid anything that may cause eczema.
