Allegedly, hanging one's washing out in the garden ruins the aesthetic look of the place [shock]

I haven’t read all the comments, but in case this hasn’t been raised: when we all need to think about the climate, hanging washing outside must be the most environmentally friendly option. Tumble driers are energy guzzlers and not everyone has alternative indoor drying facilities

I always hang my laundry out to dry, weather permitting, but I am lucky to have a back garden.
My pet hate is seeing the pegs left on the line.
My whirly washing line goes back in the garage when I’m not using it.
As far as the original post goes, I wouldn’t buy a place with those rules.

Hanging washing outside to dry is one of the best things we can do to help the planet, imo! When I had my babies and Terry nappies I had two lines in my back garden, one each way to catch the sun and/ or the prevailing wind. Loved seeing the, sparkling white nappies on the line. And currently we are told fresh air "blows Covid particles away", so it's a win win isn't it?!! Gotta go ... washing to hang out!!!!

We do have high hedges either side of our garden but both my neighbours also dry their washing in their gardens. The only time I see it is if I am upstairs in the back bedroom ironing.

If there’s space outside residents shouldn’t be barred from using it. We all need to wash clothes and drying them inside without a dryer leads to chronic damp and takes forever. Particularly difficult if you have a family to wash for. Developers/landlords shouldn’t be encouraging residents to use dryers on environmental grounds alone.

When we lived in Holland everyone hung their duvets out the bedroom windows every day front or back. It was a lovely way to air the bedding!

It is quite common for flats to have a no outside washing rule but tenancy agreements now often say no washing outside, no washing to be dried inside either, so god know how people are supposed to dry it

All my washing goes on the line if it’s a nice day. Don’t usually do any on a Sunday and when I lived in Germany it was forbidden to hang out washing on a Sunday. No way I would buy a house with these silly rules, I would be asking about climate change to whoever was trying to enforce this.

My bloc of flats do have, as part of the conditions NO WASHING ON BALCONIES. And, I really support this as it does not look good. So, most of the time I use my eco-friendly Heat Pump tumble dryer - but with the really lovely weather recently, I have just hung the wet washing on a dryer near the sunny window in the spare bedroom, having that window wide open. Have fot everything dry quite easily that way,
Although I will admit, one of the two things i miss fro m my house in a London suburb is hanging washing on my whirkygig.

Surely drying washing outdoors is the green way to go - free wind and solar power!
Sheer snobbishness when people aren’t allowed to hang washing outside.

I love putting fresh bedding that has been out on the line. None of the perfume additives can replicate that smell.

What about all those garden design programmes ?

Yes my washing is on the line at the moment, I put the bras etc in the centre of the whirligig then the shirts etc on the outside. Would hate to have it hanging inside in the summer.

I love hanging my washing out & do it whenever possible though I have to admit I never dry towels on the line as they go all crunchy & hard - it's the tumble dryer for them!

Mine is blowing dry outside in my garden as I write.
Wouldn’t have it any other way, the exception being, if it was raining.

Reagan was the poster boy for ‘modern’ tumble dryers, so in the USA perhaps from the 50s it was considered poverty stricken to hang clothes outside, or UnAmerican. In films there are shorthand images to attitudes, so if you want to show someone as impoverished you would do a short of the washing being put on the line. I certainly put my washing on the line and sin of sins leave my pegs mostly. My very rich friend, swimming pool etc has her American visitors amazed when they come to stay observing her putting washing out. Perhaps instead of posting here we ought to email our MP to get the no washing outside struck off all new builds for ecological reasons.

I always put my washing outside when I can, weather permitting but then we live in a rural area. I remember a conversation with some American ladies in a hotel laundry room and they were fascinated by the concept of a washing line!

As I usually go for colourful socks and knickers, I think my washing line is quite entertaining!

I lived in the south east in the 70s and the area had conditions on properties that included No Washing to be hung outside. My current property has a condition that only a rotary dryer can be used,no washing lines across the garden so nothings is new.

I always hang my washing out in the garden - it’s blowing a treat today. In fact, if the weather isn’t right for outside drying, I put off doing the washing. I don’t have a tumble drier.

I have to say, I really don’t like seeing washing draped over balconies.

We live in Edinburgh, and have a beautiful well-kept shared drying green, with borders belonging to each owner. It’s sheltered and lovely for drying clothes....and we have a pulley!

My washing goes outside at every opportunity, I hate drying inside and don’t have a tumble dryer which I think are economically and environmentally bad. My working neighbour insists her retired husband uses the dryer all year round (she hates insects) so he has to make sure his lines of washing come in before she returns from work

If for whatever reason you can’t hang washing outside, then an indoor airer with a dehumidifier running nearby is supposed to be a very good alternative and will prevent any problems of damp.

We have recently moved to a new house with a management company. Various rules are attached but no washing outside on a line! A step too far

GrannySomerset You are absolutely right. It’s bonkers not to take advantage of lovely sunny day and hang outside, I love to see washing out!
