We all know how much it costs to redecorate a flat but I don’t know how much it costs to either install a water pump or a latrine if water was available? Maybe one of you in your previous life worked in this area.

Are you talking about a ‘toilet’ or a septic tank ?

Oopsadaisy1 Wed 28-Apr-21 13:22:51

Pumping water up to a toilet?

Can you clarify?

Well the flat costs £xx to redecorate, aid to other countries has been cut and I wondered if the same amount would have paid for a water pump in a poor village in Africa it water could be drilled for.

why don't you 'ask google' just google your question, a page full of various answers will come down

Auntieflo Wed 28-Apr-21 14:18:13

You could Google "Toilet Twinning".

oh f g sake

I did ask google and other sites but nothing came up clear. I thought it was a great shame that aid to other counties had been cut and just wondered how many stand taps could have been installed that would be used for several years for the price of a renovation that will only be used for a few years.

I don’t understand what this is about.

No idea what the OP is about. But if I had to install a toilet in a place without water, I would install a dry toilet- where 'things' are covered with saw dust and left to do what it has to do. Acutally does not smell, strangely enough.

I think the OP means if the flat at 10 Downing Street hadn’t been decorated the money could have been used to built toilets or provide stand pipes in countries where aid has been cut. I may be incorrect.

If we are talking about a village in Africa a properly designed well and a hand pump to raise water cost about £2000 5 yrs ago and probably hasn’t changed much.
As for toilets, flush toilets that don’t work are the norm and awful, earth closets are far better, unless maintenance is good.

crazyH Wed 28-Apr-21 16:22:35

Jam, I think that’s what the OP meant .....

crazyH Wed 28-Apr-21 16:26:30

Predictive spelling ?I meant Jax

What a shame the OP didn’t say that in the first place. I take it this is related to the revision of the foreign aid budget? I don’t think it’s as simple as not spending money on A means an equivalent amount can be spent on B instead.

You can pay extra on your water bill which goes to Water Aid.
Or you can donate this directly to the charity.

Composting toilets are a good idea.

Water aid is one of the very best ways to help women in developing countries, most rural villages use a river or waterhole.
