Always Think Twice About Naming A Child.

During my 91 years on this earth I have met many folk with names that conjure up various thoughts as to WHY the parents had not really thought about the consequences of naming their off spring.
Below is a rhyme I wrote concerning some folk I have worked with during my life. No doubt many who reads this will know of someone they have come across in their lives with a name that could be more than embarrassing for the person so named.

NAME THIS CHILD

During all my years on earth I have heard many a peculiar name
Did parents think that this would help bring their offspring fame?
I have lived next door to a Dickie Bird and a Dusty Miller too
And I used to know an Ida Downe believe me this is true

There was an Ivor Lott a Will Power and a Robin Hood
Also Rusty Locke and Blackie Smith and a girl named Bebe Goode
I have worked with Eva Stone and Lydia Potts and an Eileen Back
All of them have had to live with such a great amount of flak.

There was another girl I worked with whose name was May Trump
You can well imagine how she felt and why she often had the hump.
One name imprinted on my mind from many years gone by
Was of a girl starting work and I swear that this is no lie,

Of all the names that I had heard this was the unkindest of all
When the boss asked her for her name she answered Ophelia Ball.
The look of horror on his face was a picture to behold
It left a vivid memory in my mind that I have often told.

So Mums and Dads pick a name to do your children proud
And when asked what it is they will shout it clear and loud.

When I was expecting our daughter friends suggested Freesia Rosie as appropriate names. Our surname was Ball! We didn’t take up the suggestion.

Went to school with John Johnston and a friend whose initials were WC we had to embroider them on our sewing bags etc. Also, an F. Huck which always caused chuckles her name was actually very pretty.
Remember when young at the Dr's they shouted for Mrs Snowball and a tiny little lady with snow-white hair went toddling through everybody giggled.

We’ve just ordered a wedding gift for a relative, it involves personalisation. We really can’t understand why he isn’t taking her surname.
Can’t tell you what his is.

I’ve come across a couple of hospital consultants with appropriate names; Miss Back in orthopaedics and a Mr Haq, a surgeon!

I have a very long list of funny names collected from my past employment in the 1970s. Some of my favourites were:
Kui Chui, Zsa Zsa Czap, Fat Cow Chow, Myra Smellie Dick, Greville Grubb, Cliff Hanger, Daisy Roots. I'm afraid Shitlaxtif Patel obviously had a very different meaning for the parents as to what we see.

I am always baffled at Richard Richards type names WHY why couldn't their parents have though of another name?

I have relatives (deceased now) called Richard Richards, William Williams and Edward Edwards. It was a family tradition although I would have thought this had died out by now. Often the oldest son was called the same as the father.

A local councillor in this area was called Dick Small, and I once had to write a caption for a photo where the child was called Amber Gambler. When I was expecting my son, my hospital consultant was called Dr Boddy!

I knew a midwife who was Nurse Genders and I went to school with a girl whose surname was Spendlove. I wonder why her parents hadn't changed that by deed poll?

I have an unusual first name which can be shortened and wasnt keen as a teenager however I love it now. When I was buying a new mobile a few years ago the young lady asked for my name. How lovely she replied why didnt my mum call me that. But as someone else remarked when you have an unusual name you get remembered which isn't always an advantage.

One place i lived we had a tradesman called Primrose smith!! Another place I lived i had a friend called Phil(lis) Stein

Why do children now have to have hyphenated names? Are they meant to sound 'posh'? Some names I'm not sure if the parents want to be different, or just can't spell?

I don’t know many people with funny names, but I was in a choir with a man whose surname was Screech, which seemed quite appropriate.

I love unusual names, and now think I was a little bit too cautious when naming my sons. One of them has a name that is very traditional but was unusual at the time. Now, it has been at the top of the popularity charts for years, which is really annoying.

I am trying to guess the name of Nanna8’s granddaughter. I have an idea but I’m probably wrong.

People react differently to their unusual names. I have one friend who was unhappy because her unusual name made her conspicuous, and another who was delighted that hers did. Before my marriage I had a very unusual surname that was difficult to spell and to pronounce, I loved that, and wish I had never changed it..

I used to work for a Colonel De’ath. We were all prepped in advance! We had an American friend called Joe King. He used to roll his eyes when anyone came up to him said “Hello, you must be.......”.
