Giving up sugar, for good?

I watched with interest the two-part program this week on ITV I think, presented by Tom Watson and Dr Amir Khan. Tom Watson has written about the amount of weight he has managed to lose on a sugar-free diet, and in turn has reversed his Type 2 diabetes diagnosis.
As it happens for some reason for about a week now, I've just "gone off" sweets and although not cut out completely, my sugar intake is much reďuced. I think I will carry on with this new dietary plan and see what health benefits may result.
I have already lost 1 kg, so hopefully will soon lose my lockdown weight gain.
I wonder if any others have been encouraged by this program and if you will try to reduce/cut out sugar intake in your diet.

Dash! I meant to watch that and completely forgot. Would you please remind me of the channel?

Well done on your weight loss. I am scared of developing diabetes as I have such a sweet tooth.

I didn't see the programme, but was looking at 1940s/1950's fashion photos yesterday, and everyone was very slender - lots of belts and nice waists! I have cut out obvious sugar sources ie cake/biscuits, and have decided to only have chocolate at Easter/birthday/Christmas.

I don’t eat any obvious sugar but wonder whether carbs like potatoes bread and pasta get converted to sugar. I think I heard that in the above programme. PS I love dr Amir Khan! Wish he was my GP!

I'm 71. I've no intention of giving up anything!

My cousin was diagnosed Type2 diabetes last year. He immediately decided that he wasn't going to go the medication route and cut out sugar from his diet. He has lost over 3 stones and is now classed as pre-diabetic. Not a pill in sight.

Potato and bread have to be used sparingly BlueSky, according to book my Dad was given when diagnosed.

Yes that's what I'm doing at the moment, not having cakes, biscuits, chocs etc.
Normally I would bake something sweet once or twice a week, so that's put on hold for the moment!
I believe carbs are converted into sugar so small portions are recommended. We can supplement with plenty of veg and some fruit.
I have osteo arthritis so am hoping joints will improve with a few kgs less to carry.
The trouble with sugar, I find, it's so addictive, it's difficult to have one or two pieces of chocolate, you want to have four or six!
Thank you for your replies so far.

Well said kate.

I wonder about the amount of hidden sugar and/or salt in some products such as jars of pasta and curry sauces and I've now started making them from scratch.

That's how I felt timetogo2016, but I've put on so much weight during lockdown I have developed painful thread veins at the top of my very chubby thighs! If I keep going I think I'll burst so have pulled the reins.

I gave up sugar about 2 years ago because I want a life and discovered that my blood sugars were high. I gave up cakes etc., and only have one piece of dark chocolate per day. I also found that nearly all low fat products have increased sugar so now have a smaller amount of full fat ones.
Basically I use the Glycemic Index for information on sugars. www.bda.uk.com/resource/glycaemic-index.html and www.healthline.com/nutrition/glycemic-index
It's not been particularly hard once I learn the basics and I lost a stone in weight. I appreciate it would be hard if you really love cakes but I discovered No sugar biscuits in Sainsburys which helped.
