I think my dream house(s) have been the same all along varian.
I think I have had strong ideas about buildings/architecture from being about 13 to be honest and as my parents built their own home, it was something discussed quite a lot over the years.

The House of your dreams
(118 Posts)What would it be like? One of my daughter's friends has just built the house of her dreams. It is massive, built in sandstone on a couple of acres and each of her 3 children has their own private sitting room, bathroom and bedroom. I don't think I'd actually like that ( not that I could afford it anyway). I like rustic type houses with privacy and a good view . No roads in sight, preferably.
I agree ElliAnne, there are only 2 of us now but we still need a biggish house as we have often have (or had) a (very) full house but we relish the space when we have a lull. Hopefully, those days will return.
varian I think our house was just right As the families grew - a different dream house?
Practical, well situated, the right size.
Now we need something different but we still like it here.
I think, varian, it might depend on how hospitable you are as a person and whether you like visitors to stay. We have always enjoyed a house full of family, guests, foreign students and au pairs which has determined our choices. Added to that big dogs, so we haven't really had variations on size, just location.
Interesting thoughts.
Varian, I agree that our dreams or wish list will change as we get older.
When my family was younger it would have meant a larger back yard, a living room and a family room, more bathrooms etc.
Now my focus would be on a smaller but beautifully landscaped garden, nice views without stairs, location walking distance to town, and a dining room big enough to get extended family around the table! Oh, and an en-suite bathroom so I don't have to share with any visitors.
This is a very interesting thread. Our fellow Gnetters are telling us what their dream house would be at this time in their lives.
Looking back, I am sure that the dream house would have been different at earlier stages in your life.
In your twenties - a house for one or two or more? Many of us would have started families then.
As the families grew - a different dream house?
When the children flew the nest then what would be ideal?
When you became grandparents and perhaps your family were far away, did you want a house big enough to welcome them all back home?
If you are now old and on your own, what would be your ideal home?
I'd like a lovely end terrace in Cockermouth with a nice neighbour, and a small back garden with a lilac tree and rose bushes.
The house of my dreams would automatically clean itself!

Look at the queue, Nightsky!
Thanks for the recommendation.
So familiar.....Just look at that sky. A very wet and windy day in Padstow. Goughs (Coughs) for the best pasties.
I would stay in the Devon town where we moved to in 2019 as I love it here. I would really like a stone built cottage semi or detached with 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms and a large garden of around 3/4 acre. It would be divided in half with one half left like a field for my dogs to run in and maybe a few chickens.
The other half would have a summer house, lawns and flower beds. Oh and a shed for OHs tools etc.

*Nightsky, Callistemon etc.* These are for you from today. Sorry I didn't have time to pop into the estate agents.
Thank you Elianne. ....my favourite place in the world. The many trips on the ferry and the wonderful walks. Our friends are there now and this came today.
Can recommend “The Point at Polzeath”. Lovely restaurant with fantastic views over the golf course and lovely food.
I love the Ruislip and NZ houses on there NotSpaghetti. I yearn for modern but own Edwardian.
And here's my other favourite house site:
www.wowhaus.co.uk/
It really is just sharing some truly fabulous properties that have popped up for sale. Sometimes a house they've brought to your attention comes up again a few years later. It's interesting to see what has been done to them in the meantime.
I love this site where they have pulled together lots of listings in America.
Such a massive country there's probably something for everyone (if we wanted to move there of course!).
Happy browsing!

My dream location and house is the inspector's beach cottage in "Death in Paradise" ☀️?️☀️
I think there might be a whole village of us on those sands soon!
??️???
I'd like the one that Inspector Montabano lives in!
I downsized 3 years ago from a lofty Victorian house to a small C16 cottage. My dream now is for a detached modern house with open plan kitchen/dining/sitting room, bedroom en suite with walk in wardrobe, 1 other bedroom en suite, a study/studio, underfloor heating throughout, small courtyard garden, garage and it must have sea views and easy access to shops. My requirements are modest ?
Having lived in two period properties, one with 4 floors with the garden accessed via the basement, whilst our children were growing up we now live in a relatively modern bungalow. So pretty much got our dream as we have a lovely garden we can step straight from the kitchen and conservatory to.However I love house programmes like Building the dream. And often think how I would design our home even better from scratch. But definitely light, airy modern and with a fabulous view. Not necessarily coastal.I live in a hilly area and would like to look out on lots of greenery and wooded glades.
To those of you who hanker after an upstairs living room, I did have one in my last house, in many ways it was lovely because we had views of the River Thames, however, a massive pain when I ordered a new sofa and the delivery men just couldn't get it into the living room it just wouldn't go round the the final twist of the stairs. It had to go back
I moved recently and reordered the sofa so it is now in my ground floor living room.
Like many I would love a house with a view of the sea, somewhere beautiful like Salcombe or Fowey. Never mind I'm in Dorset for a week right now with views of the sea, so that'll have to do!
All yours sound so nice, I'd like to join in!
I have had to look up Huf Haus and inglenook, both of which are unfamiliar to me. Admirable, both!
Agree with sea view house, but I've always admired craftsman style, they seem so cosy to me. I also like many modern styles, since with windows are so large.
I live in a 60's boxy suburban, with a lovely ocean view, but unfortunately no beach nearby. All our waterfront is very industrial. So I can look at the ocean, in fact I was just watching some porpoises with my binoculars, but also have to listen to the odd train shunting back and forth while unloading to the grain silo nearby. Thankfully the tracks are quite a bit lower than us, so we can hear but not see them.
So yes to the beach house. One addition: a garage with automatic door so I can easily take out my bike.
I'm lucky, I've lived in MOnica's dream house for 40 years - 500 years old with a logburner, oak beams & no neighbours. Of course, I've got other dreams - I'd like much more light, a utility room, sea view, conservatory & a pool, with shops & restaurants in walking distance - we live in the middle of nowhere which is lovely but as we get older, not so convenient.
Near the sea would be great but and there is always a but, unless I could own the beach and prevent anyone from meandering along taking0 pictures it would be a non starter. A ranch type house with large wrap around verandah to protect from the elements in a secluded area would be fine.
I'm living in it!!!
It cleans and tidies itself
It sounds lovely but I do know that sea air means more maintenance is needed from when we lived near the sea.
