IRONIC HUMOUR ..........BUT so true

(93 Posts)

I had this sent to me the other day and thought others might like to read it too.
.........................................

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.
No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Knowing when to come in out of the rain
Why the early bird gets the worm
Life isn't always fair and maybe it was my fault
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations
were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife,
Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers:

I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
If you still remember him pass this on.
If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Goodness knows Jennifer. It’s all mad to me!

JenniferEccles Wed 19-May-21 10:06:25

What’s so annoying is that it’s a tiny minority, albeit a vociferous minority, who engage in this nonsense and the rest of us, the majority of the population are expected to pander to their daftness.

If the nonsense was just ignored they would soon tire of it.

It must be a form of attention seeking mustn’t it?

Parsley3 Wed 19-May-21 10:05:01

Non events turned into laughing stocks? So true, but then we humans like to pick up on nonsense and call it typical of today.

I recently read something which shows a complete lack of common sense.
An individual, with an online user name of Laurence complained to LNER railway because the conductor on his/her train had made an announcement welcoming ‘ladies and gentlemen’ to the train service.

Now it appears that‘Laurence’ describes themselves as non-binary, so doesn’t identify as male or female and so concluded that the train announcement didn’t apply to him/her.

Now the shocking part of all this nonsense is that the rail company issued a grovelling apology, unbelievably stating that its staff “shouldn’t have used language like that”
Language like that? Ladies and gentlemen?

Too often it’s found that grovelling apologies are issued in daft incidences like this which turns a non- event into a laughing stock.

I feel like giving up.....everyone’s going mad!?

"Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault."

That verse is utter bilge. You have always had the right to defend yourself and your property against intruders and still do.

It’s true....you can defend yourself, but you can’t use ‘excessive force’ ( whatever that is ). The problem is it’s open to interpretation, and if you’re frightened for your life, or those of your children / grandchildren, you’ve still got to weigh up, in the heat of the moment, how best to deal with it.

I second that Kim19

Maywalk, I totally respect your decision to take your leave of us. I would simply ask you to please reconsider that and perhaps decide in our favour?

I misread that as ‘you couldn’t defend yourself from a bugler’.

Especially one who is off-key

They can be lethal those bugles you know.

Callistemon it's okay, I'll take the blame!
I explained upthread that I enjoy May's original posts.

May for heaven's sake, don't stop posting because of my comments.
It seems that you have a lot of experiences and opinions to share.
Those are the really interesting things.

Ngaio1 Tue 18-May-21 16:40:31

Maywalk, So very true.

Callistemon Tue 18-May-21 16:33:28

2nd post would not post.

Callistemon Tue 18-May-21 16:32:45

Not you in particular FannyC, yours are probably the least of it.

If posters don't like a thread why not ignore it or just say they don't agree and leave it at that without all the spiteful comments?

Callistemon Tue 18-May-21 16:30:22

Not particularly you, FannyC, yours are probably the least spiteful.

I may not agree with the OP's views but I think there is so much spite on GN lately which is far worse.

Parsley it seems that May likes to post stuff on here that she has seen on her Facebook feed.

It seems that a lot of people like this sort of thing.

I'm not one of them; I prefer to read the authentic thoughts and opinions of people, regardless of whether or not I agree with them, or indeed 'like' them.

Actually, Maywalk does post her own original stuff and, as a nonogenarian, may have a different view in life than some of the much younger Gransnetters.

She is entitled to her views - if you don't like her threads just ignore them instead of posting spiteful comments.

I think it’s all about extremes, and never being able to find that middle ground.
I remember being ridiculed by teachers at school, and they should never have been allowed to punish physically, caning, slippering etc.
However, now we’re too far the other way. The teachers are ridiculed by the pupils, and quite often physically hurt too.
This just seems to apply to everything now. We don’t like something, so we go straight to the other end, and that doesn’t work either.
‘ common sense’, unfortunately, is not common at all. We all have different ideas on everything, what’s right and wrong. The major thing I’ve felt over the years...is that we have to be so careful what we say all the time, lest we offend.
Just this one thread already shows how different we all are.

Thank you for posting that Maywalk and please don't leave because some people put your down. I found your post interesting and you have a lot of interesting things to share I'm sure.

I agree with DiscoDancer that the key is to find the middle ground but it seems that is not easy. Of course we don't want to go back to the days of cruel teachers but nor do we want teachers being abused by pupils. We have gone too far over in every walk of life, and gone from one extreme to the other and we now need to take a few steps back.

Shinamae Tue 18-May-21 15:25:42

Maywalk thank you so much for posting that I did enjoy reading it,found it very interesting and also some of the arguments against it

I'm being petty, pedantic and off-topic.
But, please, can we use ellipses properly on Gransnet.
You only need three...
Thank you

Fanny I am obviously not as educated as many of the posters on this thread and for that I make no apology but I have no idea what you are talking about

AmberSpyglass Tue 18-May-21 14:57:02

Honestly? I find a lot of this stuff really cringy. Absolutely ghastly and often mawkish. The kind of thing that gives grans a bad name!

Namsnanny Tue 18-May-21 14:25:52

Yes I get it Fanny, as I'm not on any other medium let alone Fb I didn't take offence,?
But we all absorb and regurgitate the ideas around us dont we?

Maywalk Tue 18-May-21 14:23:37

FannyCornforth

You're very philosophical today Nams!
(I was trying to politely say that I'd prefer not to see FB fodder all over GN ?)

...........and you wont have any FB fodder from me Fanny as I stated earlier.

FB is a separate issue to GN and I belong to both as well as many forums from long ago which are ALL different.
Just for the record I have been a member of Gransnet for some years usually with a joke or something to help folks remember things from the past.

I wont bother putting anything else up here again, its not worth getting my blood pressure up about to start off any more seizures.

Keep safe and best wishes to all for the future.
