have one?

MawBe Wed 19-May-21 13:40:52

Please could you ensure that your daughter brings her passport on the following day:
Ah, a single sex school.
Independent?

M0nica Wed 19-May-21 13:34:33

Most children will not have passports and the poorer the families are the less likely it will be there children will have one.

Passports are expensive, £50 or more. Are schools really expecting the parents of children from poor homes where foreign travel is beyond their means to spend £50 per child to prove they are entitled to be educated in this country?

Education is intended to be free. A £50 entrance charge is not 'free'

I suspect this is a half-baked idea from an Academy chain or one head teacher.

No the link cannot be verified, as the person who shared the letter, does not want to be identified. Fair enough.

Here is the text:

Dear Parents,

As you may be aware, the UK's departure from the European Union on 31 January 2020, citizens of the EEA will no longer have an automatic right to come to the UK to study and work. ******** (name of school) is under legal obligation to ensure that all its pupils have the required immigration permit throughout their studies. We are therefore taking this opportunity to review the nationality and status of all pupils ahead of the 30 June 2021 deadline.

Passport review

During first stage of review we are asking all pupils to bring their passport to school so that we can verify their status. Passports will be collected at the start of the day and copies retained. Passports will be returned at the end of the school day.

Please could you ensure that your daughter brings her passport on the following day:

(list of days for each school year).

Oh right. It can be one of the verifying documents for the standard admissions procedure for anyone transferring in out of the normal transfer times. A standard check on birth dates etc.

Nothing to do with Brexit??

MerylStreep Wed 19-May-21 12:55:35

In the article that muse put up it states that lack of these documents may delay the starting of school
There was nothing to say that some might not have the right to be educated there
But hey, let’s not let the truth get in the way of a good pot stirring post.

My GC attend a total of 5 different schools, primary and secondary, not one has had a request to bring in their passport.

Proof of home address and birth certificate have always been needed on beginning primary school, along with proof of address when applying to senior schools, even when my children began their schooling.

MawBe Wed 19-May-21 12:37:44

Kali2

This is in the context of schools sending letters to parents asking children to bring their passports on a certain day, year by year- in order to check their resident status. Explaining that things have changed since Brexit and that some may no longer have the right to be educated there.

And some of my friends asking 'what if the children do not have a passport?'. Which is currently not a requirement in the UK.

So is this happening in your experience, eg to your grandchildren?
I had never come across this, is it in the U.K.?
Are there countries where a passport is a requirement for children unless foreign travel is planned?
And what do you mean “some may not have the right to be educated there” ?
Surely Brexit occurred nearly 18 months ago didn’t it?

Are we talking about the UK?

If they don’t have their own passports they’ll be on their parents, won’t they? If they’ve travelled in.

If they were born here a birth certificate will establish that.

Do you have a verified link to this actually happening and where?

There's little evidence to verify this. After a quick search, this is all I can find.

www.newham.gov.uk/schools-education/documents-needed-admission-meeting

However there may be other schools asking the same thing.

I wish my mother had updated her passport as when we needed photo ID to open a new bank account for her ( to do with issues around her dementia which I was trying to sort out), she had no acceptable ID as she no longer had a driving licence!

GagaJo Wed 19-May-21 11:44:19

Yes, all my family do.

JaneJudge Wed 19-May-21 11:19:56

I haven't got one and neither have two of my children

annodomini Wed 19-May-21 11:17:36

Still wondering why... however: yes.

Witzend Wed 19-May-21 10:40:43

2 elder Gdcs do, not sure about the youngest, born shortly before Covid kicked off.

I’m sure everybody else does.
Since dd kept her maiden name when she married, at least partly for professional reasons, and her children have taken their father’s surname, she needs to take their birth certificates when travelling abroad without him (as has happened once or twice) to prove that she wasn’t abducting them!

I was with her once in the car en route to France when she was asked for BCs, and was reassured to see that they do ask for them.

Urmstongran Wed 19-May-21 10:31:05

Maybe Kali2 intends to return and explain to us why she’s asking? I’m curious actually - more about the question than the replies.

MawBe

Still wondering why this should be if any interest to anybody else ????

Exactly.
No idea of the point, if any.

grannysyb Wed 19-May-21 10:16:10

My DGCs all have one, the youngest now 14 went to Barbados when she was six weeks old!

Izabella Wed 19-May-21 09:49:24

Odd question, but then my synapses often miss the obvious.

Bibbity Wed 19-May-21 09:48:53

I don’t have any of the above but my 7 and 4 year old do. My almost 2 year old does not.

FannyCornforth Wed 19-May-21 09:47:35

Maw and me!

tanith Wed 19-May-21 09:22:43

Yes all of them have passports.

henetha Wed 19-May-21 09:18:46

Yes. But they are all young adults now.

Deedaa Wed 19-May-21 09:11:34

Yes. Two of them went to Portugal for a wedding a few years ago and the other one has a passport so he can visit his family in Hungary.
