I thought it may be interesting and informative if members told us about hotels or B&B’s in the UK that they have stayed at, or want to stay ( maybe a friend has recommended).Either good for a week or a short break.Such a big membership on GN must give us a lot of ideas.Maybe mention a few nearby things to do/visit as well.smile

We've been going to the amazing Empire Hotel in Llandudno for over 30 years. Its 3rd generation family run and has moved with the times. It's a historic landmark in the town & is constantly being updated. Many of the staff have been there since our first visit, the food is superb, everyone is friendly and the rooms are very comfortable. There's a lovely pool and beauty treatments are available. The sea is a couple of minutes walk away. We're counting the days til our next visit.

I always turned my nose up at Holiday Inns, but in recent years Easy jet have put me in the ones at Gatwick and Toulouse airports when there have been 'glitches'. I was amazed. Lovely big rooms, hugely comfy beds and fabulous white cotton bedding. Very nice bathrooms. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and the food and wines surprisingly good and reasonably priced.

Very interesting post, thank you for so many recommendations, must try some of them for short breaks away.

Very interesting Applegran. We sold our Guest House in Plymouth just before the pandemic hit and now live in a lovely coastal area of Wales. I have considered doing house swap so will have a look at that site.

You could try going back to the place you loved and visited with your friend. It just MIGHT help you to recall happy times there with him and let him pass on in
Peace. I don't imagine that he would want you and those others who loved him
To spend the rest of their lives being sad. Go there and celebrate the fun you had together - lucky you and lucky
Him to have had such friends and such fun. Worth a try - for his sake too.

We have now had several wonderful holidays - free! We are doing home swaps - at first we were quite scared of having strangers living in our home, but we've found that the knowledge that we are in their home and they are in ours is a strong incentive (if you need one) to look after their home when you stay there. Some people we've swapped with have done 30 or 40 swaps and say that the worst which has happened was a broken mug! The site we use is this www.guardianhomeexchange.co.uk/
You get a whole house and garden - sometimes you are asked to feed a cat - and we have had wonderful breaks this way. This year we are doing two swaps both in England, but there are swaps available all over the world when there is no pandemic. Its worth thinking about - and you can browse without joining to get an idea of what's possible.

We’ve stayed at Walwick Hall near Hexham, it’s not cheap but is a lovely place and the staff are so friendly. We love Hexham and the surrounding area so much that we’re contemplating retiring up there.

The Duke's Head in Richmond, Surrey - comfortable pub B&B, run by a lovely couple; also has a friendly bar serving delicious lunches and dinners.

The Blackwell Grange Hotel on the outskirts of Darlington was superb, couldn't fault anything. We had a long weekend there two years ago and I'm seeking an opportunity to go back.

Oh, and I agree with Kate about the Wetherspoons Portland Hotel in Chesterfield. OH was a big fan of the JDW chain and we stayed in many of their hotels but Chesterfield has always been my favourite, stayed there several times.

Am just off to look that one up Ellan I get twitchy if I don’t have a short break in the Lake District every year or so.

Linthwaite House in Windermere is beautiful
The rooms are exceptional, as is the food. The people who look after you could not do more
It has been taken over and for obvious reasons, we haven't stayed there recently.
I do hope they haven't changed too much. We have an afternoon tea booked. I am beyond excited

We always used alistair sawday books and now website for recommendations both here and in Europe. If he say it’s good, then it’s good !

Aviary Court Hotel, Portreath, Cornwall, very small hotel, beautiful surroundings, food exceptional.

lemongrove Thu 20-May-21 21:07:33

Just looked it up, it’s called The Close ( Tetbury.)

lemongrove Thu 20-May-21 20:51:00

We had a lovely three day break in a hotel in the centre of Tetbury (Glos) a couple of years ago. Can’t remember it’s name ?but it’s right next to the Highgrove shop.An old building, with lovely rooms and a secret garden at the back of the hotel with a dining terrace. Will try and find the name, because it’s well worth a stay. The parking is at the back too, but it’s nice to leave the car and wander around Tetbury on foot ( it’s not a huge town.) Plenty of antique shops for those who enjoy them ( me).Had the best nights sleep ever there.

What a great thread, it's always useful to get personal referrals.

We had almost given up on hotels except for the odd one-nighter, and for the last five years have almost always stayed in self catering cottages. But when we tried to book somewhere recently it had more than doubled in price - it will be back to the Premier Inn for us I think. Which is fine by me, at least I know it will be reasonably quiet and the bed will be comfy and clean.

lemongrove Thu 20-May-21 20:27:32

I agree, Premier Inns are clean, comfortable and a great price too.
I’ve made notes of everything so far, as you can’t beat a personal recommendation.smile Also you never know which bit of the country you may end up in.

I’m always happy at a Premier Inn! Reasonable and good breakfasts. I know what to expect.

Me too Hollysteers.
Two favourites - London we always stay at County Hall. It's very central and the customer service is good. Restaurant food is good standard for a reasonable price. We also liked Bricket Wood where we stayed to visit St Albans Abbey. The location beside the river was lovely.

Royal Duchy Hotel Falmouth Cornwall. Lovely rooms and sitting areas downstairs. Fabulous food and they do regular DBB rates. Great staff , most stay a long time and nothing is too much trouble , they also do super afternoon tea . It has a pool and nice gardens and you can book spar treatments (these need to be done in advance) .

Lovely little town and harbour and you can get reasonably priced boat trips and Pendennis castle is nearby. Also only short drive to St Ives and the Minack outdoor theatre which puts on productions in the summer.

Machrimore, on Burnt Street in Wells-next-the-sea, Norfolk.
Lovely rooms, very nice, pleasant hosts, and a wonderful breakfast. Plus only a few minutes walk to the harbour.

Shelflife Thu 20-May-21 17:20:04

Aveline, we also love Dumfries and Galloway . Haven't stayed at Balcary Bay but have called in for coffee a few times. Keep saying to my DH " we must come again and stay" , Beautiful location , so peaceful. After your recommendation I think it's time we made a booking.

We stayed at Mossyard for many years and would go to the Balcary Bay for lunch.
I had forgotten how beautiful it is.
Sadly we no longer go as we went with dear friends and all our children, our friend died very tragically and we cannot bring ourselves to visit that part of the world without him.
It brings back so many happy memories.
