Congratulations to Boris and Carrie who got married today in Westminster Catholic Cathedral. Just that really. I love weddings, doesn't matter who the couple are, I always hope it works out happily.

My D.S. who was baptised a Catholic had to prove his first marriage was annulled before he could marry in a Roman Catholic Church. His first marriage was in a registry office not a church. He would not have been allowed to marry in church if he had been divorced, This was a Spanish church but I assume the rules are the same for Catholics everywhere.

But I thought the Catholic Church didn’t agree with abortion, adultery or divorce?

FarNorth Sat 29-May-21 23:10:42

His children from previous marriages are legitimate as they were born of marriages that were legal.

But are they legitimate, or do they even exist at all, in the eyes of the Catholic Church?

who cares

Carrie is a Catholic and Wilfred was christened there.

Boris was raised a Catholic but he married his previous 2 wives in non Catholic ceremonies and therefore, in Catholic eyes, he hasn’t been married before so this is his first wedding.

Thanks for the explanation.

It's ridiculous 'reasoning' on the part of the Catholic Church, though.

I suspect that a lot of Catholic priests will be very perturbed by this news, there have already been several who have taken to Twitter to express their concerns about the impact this news will have on people within the Catholic Church who have been denied a second marriage.

In fact there is no need of ‘annulment’ as BJ has not previously been married according to Catholic custom and therefore his previous marriages were ‘invalid’ in the eyes of the RC church. His children from previous marriages are legitimate as they were born of marriages that were legal.

One too many ‘who’...where’s the edit button?

Nannagarra Sat 29-May-21 22:54:04

Sneaky - I thought it was next July.
Who do you speculate who the witnesses were? Gove? Sunak? Hancock? Starmer?
???

Polarbear2 Sat 29-May-21 22:52:45

I join bluebell in saying ?

Deedaa Sat 29-May-21 22:46:59

When we considered sending GS1 to a catholic school there were so many hoops to jump through that we didn't bother. Apparently the church doesn't worry so much about people who want to marry. Has anyone seen either of them inside a church apart from official occasions?

Lucca Sat 29-May-21 22:44:53

As Lauren would have said “am I bovvered ?”

JenniferEccles Sat 29-May-21 22:44:27

In addition today is something called Royal Oak Day according to another thread!
Congratulations to them both.

Callistemon Sat 29-May-21 22:36:47

Oh, come on, Bluebelle, I've just declared Monday as a Public Holiday!! Cheer up!

??

BlueBelle Sat 29-May-21 22:30:34

Dinahmo Sat 29-May-21 22:27:57

Kali2

are they both Catholic?

Is either Catholic?

I spotted it on Twitter, but Google confirms www.thesun.co.uk/news/15108452/boris-johnson-marries-carrie-symonds-westminster/

Interesting. The Sun's video shows Westminster Abbey, not the RC cathedral.

NotTooOld Sat 29-May-21 22:24:52

The BBC have it. Well, I think it's great news. Good luck to the pair of them - and Wilfred.

When you marry your mistress, you create a job vacancy. hmm Seems a convenient distract to change the narrative imo

Actually I don’t believe it. It is too ridiculous to be true.

??
Showing on the BBC News site now. ??

Callistemon Sat 29-May-21 22:02:53

Can we have Public Holiday?
This Monday perhaps?

Callistemon Sat 29-May-21 22:01:43

Boris was raised a Catholic but he married his previous 2 wives in non Catholic ceremonies and therefore, in Catholic eyes, he hasn’t been married before so this is his first wedding.

Well, that's very convenient!

Isn't it time the Catholic Church updated?

NotSpaghetti Sat 29-May-21 22:00:19

My understanding too Lucylocket.
He was christened a Catholic and the Anglican marriages won't count.
