How much would you pay him?

A young 12 year old lad has taken on the task of mowing my grass; and will, in the autumn, trim back my hedge.

He makes an excellent job of it and has asked for £5 an hour. I feel that is a bit mean, as the end result is not dependent on whether a small or a large person has done it!

What would you do?

My 14yr old Grandson, who is just short of 6' tall, cuts my grass once a fortnight and occasionally washes my car. My DD said that £10 was too much for a half hours work, so I pay him a fiver. His parents also 'pay' him for car & window washing in lieu of pocket money and their rate = £5. Of course I feed him while he is here and he goes home with home baking, vegetables or jam.

I suppose it is different when it is your own Grandson, who would do these jobs, and many more, for me, unpaid, as he loves his Granny.

I think £10 is better. My parents used pay £15 per hour for an adult to do their garden. My son asked if he could cut our grass, we have about 2 acres so have a ride on mower, he was 12/13 at the time. I had to stop him when I saw him whizzing across the garden and jumping over the rockery on the mower - no good for either of us, nor the poor old mower. My son was having a great time!!!!

what a shame that the OP didn't put in her original post that the boys mother was present when he done the jobs. Could have saved a couple of pages of comments!

The minimum wage for under 18s is under £5 an hour, homefarm.

homefarm Fri 04-Jun-21 12:19:46

Should be at least the minimum wage.
What machinery is he using and is it safe?

I paid my grandson £10 this week for mowing the lawn and trimming the edges. He also took out weeds from my slated part of the front garden

DH does gardening jobs for 4 clients for £10 per hour. One lady he has worked for for 10 yrs insists on paying him £15 per hour as "he's such a treasure"

Babs758 Fri 04-Jun-21 08:54:23

£10 per hour and a bonus of some steel toed boots!

Dibbydod Fri 04-Jun-21 00:57:04

I have a regular gardener and he charges £12 per hour , he is so good that he is always fully booked up . There is also a young lad in my area who charges £10 per hour for mowing lawns .

I agree with the £10. Sounds like a good plan for you both. He helps you and you help him. Definitely worth a tenner.

Pudding123 - oh goodness - I am glad you survived!

Luckygirl

His mother is here with him while he is doing it - he suffers with depression and this is part of the programme to boost his confidence. It is succeeding, I am very glad to say.

Does he have his parents permission..

lemsip see above quote ....

lemsip Thu 03-Jun-21 22:11:53

Does he have his parents permission.. Be careful with letting him use shears.

Greciangirl Thu 03-Jun-21 22:06:57

For heavens sake, give him £10.
He is probably saving up for something, anyway.
Be kind hearted and generous.
Sounds like he deserves it.

TrendyNannie6 Thu 03-Jun-21 21:01:55

I’d give him ten pounds

Pudding123 Thu 03-Jun-21 20:45:55

Lucky girl how kind you are employing this young lad,I am sure he looks forward to getting out and as we know being outdoors with nature does help our mental health.
I think perhaps I should employ someone to do mine ,last week ( I have been mowing my lawn regularly for almost 40 year s)I cut through the lead in my mower !!luckily I didn't go up in a puff of smoke but I was annoyed with my self for not paying attention to where I had placed the lead.

I am currently supporting a young homeless man who, before COVID and lockdowns, worked as a groundsman on minimum wage. Unfortunately there are plenty of gardeners already in the town (charging £14 an hour and using their own tools) so he was unable to pick up any work locally.

I’m now thinking of putting him in shorts and telling the neighbours he’s my teenage grandson looking for lawn mowing jobs. ??

Harris27 Thu 03-Jun-21 17:51:04

I think £5 is a bit mean give him £10 and you will keep him and get your garden done regularly.

Craftycat Thu 03-Jun-21 17:25:23

I just checked with a neighbour & she pays £15. It is quite a large lawn.
I do my own as I am quite capable & I actually enjoy doing it.
We have 2 ponds so not a huge lawn.

Lulubelle500 Thu 03-Jun-21 17:22:33

We have a lovely young man mow our lawn regularly in Summer. He's a neighbour's son and I've known him all his life. It's a long lawn and we give him £10 which he never wants to take but we insist!

DillytheGardener Thu 03-Jun-21 16:59:37

Please send him to me, would certainly show up my husbands lack of enthusiasm for mowing.

Chestnut Thu 03-Jun-21 16:54:24

We pay £15-£20 an hour to an adult so I'd say £10 is fair for a boy.

One thing....*what happens if he slices his hand off*....is anyone insured? His parents might hold you responsible.

Lesley60 Thu 03-Jun-21 16:49:32

I wouldn’t leave my child do it for £5 as you say if it’s done properly I would give him £15

Shandy57 Thu 03-Jun-21 16:13:18

Check he is wearing suitable footwear Luckygirl - local boy nearly lost his toes as a teenage boy doing people's lawns.

I paid my gardener £15 to do my lawn, took him about 12 minutes.

welbeck Thu 03-Jun-21 16:09:21

this is not a full time or even a part time job.
it is not appropriate to compare it to that.
the boy does not have to do the work at all.
he is being helpful and doing the work well.
OP is happy to pay £10, and everyone benefits.
