I've just started yoga. I have been told by everyone I've met, who do yoga, that it is the best thing they have ever taken up. I am used to aerobic exercise so this is a very new type of exercise for me. How long will it be before I can feel the benefit?

What is it you are hoping to achieve? Have you set yourself a goal?

I have got a friend who is a yoga teacher and she has set goals for me. I am hoping that it will give me some pain relief for my bad back as well as a sense of calm and wellness.

I did yoga for 18 years and it kept me very supple. I have now changed to Pilates just for a change. You should feel the benefit slowly it is not the same as aerobic exercise as instead of shortening your muscles it lengthens them.

I used to do both yoga and pilates but dropped off the yoga.
Pilates is continuous movement which helps me more with my arthritis, especially my hips. After a days gardening, an hour of pilates is brilliant. Both are excellent for what Newatthis says too.

Sorry - meant to answer your question. You'll feel the benefit straight away. You need to do it regularly to get long term benefit. I done Pilates up to 3x a week (classes) and do a short session at home between when needed. Too much gardening!
