Received an email stating I had been "chosen" to receive a £1,000 Tesco gift voucher and to claim it just click on the link (yeah like that is going to happen!) According to moneysupermarket this is a scam

My blood pressure is much better since buying "call blocker" phones and these scam calls simply never come through.
If a friend's or company (we've dealt with) account is compromised that is often how our email is then passed to a scammer database. We need to be in the habit of changing our passwords on a regular basis to help avoid this.

Growing0ldDisgracefully

GillT57 sorry, yes I do, according to my other half?

It has been alleged that I do too! Don't believe a word of it grin

Yes, and the parcel delivery scam is on a roll again.

I.ve had one to say I had won an iPhone 12. Also, our internet was going to be cut off if we did not pay with Bankcard. Just in the last two days.

A new one this morning claiming to be from the TV Licensing Authority. My direct debit has failed and my licence will expire tonight. So I need to confirm my bank details and give them my credit card details so they can take the failed payment.

Wonderful, except we don’t have a TV or a licence.

Danna I have reported it as it looked very official and may catch some people out.

My daughter had that one about a year ago - she was worried sick and almost acted on it. I told her to leave it to ME - I contacted the genuine TV Licensing Authority on her behalf and explained the situation.

They wouldn't give me any of her Account Details, but I told them I didn't WANT that - I just needed to be able to re-assure her that all was OK. They'd had lots of complaints about that scam and MANY PEOPLE had fallen for it as it was so convincing. I finished up visiting her and making the phone call from HER HOME on my phone - then passed the phone to her so she could give her permission for them to speak to me on her behalf.

What a palaver - but obviously very necessary! All sorted!

Had a new one (to me) yesterday on my NEW mobile phone (different No ....not a pre used one either !) telling me my internet connection was about to be permanently switched off in ten minutes ............I said WHY ....no answer ...I then asked for the phone number so I could call back (no intention !) she hummed and arred for a few seconds then gave me a number which obviously I never called .....so I then passed the No to my genuine internet provider and the Action Fraud line.....they are a total nuisance and no one seems to be able to stop them despite promises grrrr

MaggsMcG Thu 17-Jun-21 13:29:53

I would change my passwords regularly but all that would do is lock me out of all my accounts! I'd never remember the all.

kjmpde Thu 17-Jun-21 14:07:00

if you leave your cursor on the email address it came from you will undoubtedly see a very odd address! whatever you do - don't press unsubscribe. just ignore

In May I received an email saying I had won the May draw for Trust Pilot Reviews and I would get £500. I thought it was a scam, turned out it was absolutely legitimate and I received the £500 and went along to the store that I had reviewed on Trust Pilot and got my photos taken with the giant cheque for their marketing purposes, a lovely coffee/cake and treated very well indeed by the staff. So not every offer is a scam.

Only if they ask for card or bank account info would it be a scam...

Seemingly, I owe HMRC quite a lot of money and they have a warrant out for my arrest too. That call came through on Tuesday, I'm still waiting for plod to show up with his handcuffs!

Wait your turn! There are many of us getting our affairs in order before we get taken off in a van grin

Today’s nuisance call is from a chap offering to sell me a device to prevent nuisance calls!

My mum received a phone call from someone pretending to be the police to say that my sister had caused an accident and someone had died and that 35000 Euros were needed to let her out on bail. They put a crying woman on the phone to ask for the money. Of course it is difficult to recognise a voice when someone is crying. I think this one is particularly nasty.

NonnaW Thu 17-Jun-21 15:51:24

Has anybody had the phone calls from “your internet provider“ stating that some dubious activity had been noted from our router (can’t remember the exact wording) and did I want them to fix it? I told the first caller I just wanted him to stop trying to scam people, one other I suggested she put it all in writing to me (she got very indignant and said if I didn’t believe her, to hand up and stop wasting her time,). It culminated in a recorded message telling me that as I’d done nothing about the problem my internet would be cut off in 24 - 48 hours. That was Saturday, still online so far!

Greta Thu 17-Jun-21 15:57:28

The problem now is I don't trust anything that arrives in my inbox or on my phone. Yesterday I had two Amazon calls. Both urged me to take prompt action. Both received prompt action, I reported them. I also had an email from TV licensing telling me my licence was expiring and needed to be renewed. I was just about to delete it when I thought I'd better check the expiry date. It turns out my licence was expiring and that the email was genuine. I just hate this feeling of constantly being on my guard. We should be able to feel safe in our own homes.

“I'm still waiting for plod to show up with his handcuffs!”
Hey H1954! “Plod” is a rather derogatory term in my opinion. Did you have to say that? My son is a police officer and has been out there working with the public all hours during lockdown. No vaccination offered even though people often spit and gouge when being arrested. Sorry to go off subject but I found it hurtful. And then get called a plod. Not nice. Not funny.

moggie57 Thu 17-Jun-21 16:37:11

i got one of them ,but you have to take out a subscription to something else . if you look at the small print at the bottom ,this GIFT comes from california .... they dont have tesco's in the usa !!

Silvergrand Thu 17-Jun-21 17:03:14

Scam emails I forward to [email protected]. They get millions of reports but each one is helpful.

Elvis58 Thu 17-Jun-21 17:26:45

They are tiresome just block or just delete, do not open any.

DaisyL Thu 17-Jun-21 18:13:57

Forward scam emails to [email protected] and send scam texts to 7726

My husband always says nicely to actual small callers "Your mother would be ashamed of you!!" They always put the phone down quickly.

SewnSew Thu 17-Jun-21 21:15:07

Ooops that should have been spam callers not small callers!

Harmonypuss Thu 17-Jun-21 22:24:00

I get so many of these I've now got more blocked numbers on my phone than genuine numbers!

Saetana Thu 17-Jun-21 23:22:36

One of my hobbies is entering competitions so I get a lot of these scam emails. However, I can spot one a mile away - experience helps with this.

blondenana Thu 17-Jun-21 23:38:06

I have had quite a few scam calls, a few from Amazon, supposedly
The latest one i found through my phone bill, i pay a certain amount each month, for phone calls, and internet, same price every month, but the last one was almpst £8 more so i rang to ask why,i was told i had a premium rate no costing just under £8.i said i never ring premium rate no's, they ionsisted i must have as it was on my bill,
Who else was in the house etc, no one
IA RESEARCHED IT MYSELF, AND FOUND LOTS OF OTHERS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM
i RANG MY ip AGAIN AND TOLD THEM WHAT I HAD FOUND, APPARENTLY IT ORIGINATED FROM NIGERIA,THEY PHONE YOU, AND IF YOU ANSWER,SOMEHOW REVERSE THE CHARGE TO YOUR PHONE BILL
Sorry, caps on by accident,
The actual no was down as Sky on some peoples bills and BT on others, mine was supposed to be from Octopus, my energy supplier
So ladies check you phone bills
