What is so special about footballers ?

How is it that only a few footballers in the Scottish and England teams are having to isolate after several have been tested positive for Covid .
Surely both teams plus trainers, and managers , physios etc should have to as well.
One of my Dds was in a work meeting last week. Next day one of the participants tested positive. She and 10 other colleagues are having to isolate for ten days. She has missed meeting up with a friend she hasn’t been able to see for almost 2 years, missed a family celebration and next weekend a long awaited holiday. She also lives on her own so will see nobody.
She knows she is doing the right thing but is spitting feathers about the different rules just because somebody kicks a ball around a field.

Yes, I do find it tiresome and all the other things GG13. Did any us feel the need to say that we weren't being anti-English about the 2 lads who are self isolating?

As for the tunnel remarks, take it up with the medical people. Apparently they think differently to you, so you'll have to enlighten them.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 22-Jun-21 09:20:22

Alegrias1 I am sorry if you think the remarks in my last paragraph are tiresome and a little bit patronising and defensive

I was trying to point out that it’s the principals involved not the team.

As for spending time in the tunnel it’s open to the elements one end and leads to a wide corridor the other, far more ventilation than a changing room or team bus.

Alegrias1 Tue 22-Jun-21 09:13:12

There was an MP (MSP?) on Radio Scotland this morning talking about this. He's also a medical doctor, sorry I didn't hear it all or catch his name. The on-pitch hugs are of short duration and are outside, so are classed as fleeting contact. The reason the England players have to isolate is that they spent 20 minutes chatting with Gilmour in the tunnel, which is classed as inside, and that is classed as close contact. I didn't hear him say anything about how Gilmour could have caught it.

Just as an aside; nobody is accusing anybody of being anti-Scottish on this thread, in fact some of the posters trying to understand what's going on are Scottish. Its really tiresome, and a little bit patronising and defensive, to tell us that you're not being anti-Scottish. Almost as bad as suggesting NS "murmurs" (confused) about something she has not even said.

Now it seems that the two English footballers who were told to isolate may be allowed to play tonight if they test negative.
DD has tested negative twice but still has to isolate for another 5 days.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 22-Jun-21 08:49:14

I don’t care who plays with who to be honest.

The Scotland team travelled to the game on the team bus, changed pre-match in the changing room, spent half-time in the changing room, showered and changed in same changing room post match and then travelled on the same bus back to their hotel, all these are inside

Mr.Gilmour hugged players from his own team, why are they not isolating?

I will add to those who think this is anti-Scots, that I would be posting the same if it were the England, Welsh or Croatian Team.

According to the news They are all tested regularly, but Mount and Chilwell hugged Gilmour straight after the match, whilst still on the pitch, that’s why they are self isolating.

Mason, Chigwell and Gilmour all play for Chelsea so that's probably the reason for the hug amongst team mates BUT it went against the rules for their Euro bubble and they are now paying the price.

Totally ridiculous !!

If one child in a bubble of three classes tests positive all three classes in that bubble are sent home to self isolate.

If I get bleeped by the Covid app, because someone in the pub garden I was in tests positive, I have to isolate.

I am a football fan, but this makes a complete mockery of Covid restrictions, obviously both teams need to isolate.

It should be the same for all of the population regardless of profession, including the G7 shenanigans.

Spot on! When the rules seem to be relaxed depending on who you are, a lot of people are going to throw caution to the winds and do what they want.

Galaxy Tue 22-Jun-21 08:06:15

Actually they are running pilot studies in schools at the moment to test that concept.

Lin52 Tue 22-Jun-21 08:01:54

What I can’t understand, Sturgeon was murmuring about English/British visitors to Scotland having to self isolate on visiting Scotland, but a Scot can possibly infect team mates and everyone else, but apart from two English players, non of those need to self isolate, don’t tell me there was no hugging and back clapping in the changing room. Who needs independence one rule for Scots another for the rest of us. If I go to a restaurant and someone two tables away Tests positive, I am notified to self isolate. Testing daily does not stop the spread.

Chardy Tue 22-Jun-21 07:59:28

The 3 lads are all at Chelsea and comparatively young (20, 22, 24). Apparently they stood in the tunnel after the match chatting for almost half an hour. The tunnel could probably be considered 'indoors'.

If the players really are in a bubble, then how did that guy get Covid?

I wondered that too.

Gymstagran. There is no logic.
It seems if you kick a ball, hit a ball, ride a horse the rules are different . ?

Gymstagran Mon 21-Jun-21 21:16:06

I've been asking the same question. I've just returned from a holiday, self catering cottage with my daughter We walked for miles but the day after I got home I was pinged by test and trace and told to self isolate for 7 days as I had been in the vicinity of someone who tested positive. I had been out to eat and checked into 4 places on the app all socially distanced. I definately didn't hug anyone and am doubly vaccinated so why do I have to isolate. The idea that we could self test everyday instead is only a trial at the moment and subject to approval by the chief medical officer. I too have had to cancel planned meetings with friends. It doesn't seem logical to me.

Alegrias1 Mon 21-Jun-21 21:15:52

The footballers have been hugging each other from the start, even when they were asked to stop. Even Marcus Rashford, who everybody agrees is the nearest thing we've got to a secular saint.

Kali2 Mon 21-Jun-21 21:14:22

GG13, I am totally with you on this one. So many of us have made huge sacrifices and have not seen or hugged our closest loved ones, our sons and daughters and grandchildren.

So yes (and I will admit I am not a football supporter, but it makes no difference) I am really annoyed about this too. Makes a mockery!

Jaxjacky Mon 21-Jun-21 21:13:42

I get the antagonism, however these footballers and other ‘famous’ people are on camera, being televised and their every move scrutinised. We too have kept to the rules/advice, however you interpret it for the last 15 months, to the detriment of some of us. However, hands up, I forgot to put my mask on in a local shop for 5 minutes last week, I out of habit had one puff on my vape inside our local pub on Friday and I didn’t wash my hands when I bought the bin in last Thursday. As we open up a little, we get lax, or at least I do, for those in bubbles it must be harder to retain their discipline. Not an excuse for out and out ‘disobedience’, but, hopefully, we’re still human.

Casdon Mon 21-Jun-21 21:06:06

Each Euros team is in a bubble, so they are allowed to touch teammates, just not the opposition as I understand it! (Not that I’m an expert).

I’m sure it was spontaneous support for him, which in normal times would be lovely to see, but the powers that be make the decisions. We don’t make the rules GrannyGravy13, so there’s no point in railing at them, it is what it is.

I know, just feeling sh*tty that I am a rule follower, perhaps it’s time for a personal rebellion ?

There's a picture of Gilmour on the BBC Website, hugging Steve Clarke. I don't understand it at all.

I saw that too and Steve Clark held Gilmour's face in his hands. Like GrannyGravy, I'm done too!

I do see that being caught on camera is cause, but it does make a mockery of the restrictions, what the camera doesn’t see doesn’t matter.

Do you honestly think that all players from both teams didn’t shake hands, slap each other on the back etc. really?

Jaxjacky Mon 21-Jun-21 20:56:34

Casdon they probably did it as all three play for Chelsea…

*Casdon*, GG13 was querying why only the two English players have to isolate, not both teams…because the two hugged Billy, my assumption is the rest of the teams members didn’t hug him. I think we’re in agreement!

Hugging bad - physical contact during the game, spitting in close proximity and shouting in players faces acceptable?
