Someone recently described Boris Johnson on here as an Alpha Male, many others disagreed

Who is your idea of an Alpha Male? To me it's someone who is: Strong, Successful, Good Looking, Confident but not afraid to show a softer, caring side.

My list so far:

Rafa Nada
Keanu Reeves
Prof Brian Cox
Marcus Rashford
Steve Backshall
Will Kirk (The Repair Shop)

Another actor - the much-missed Alan Rickman. Yes, I met him in real life and he’s even more swoon-some in the flesh(!) than on the screen.

real “lovies”

Too many are choosing actors that play dominant characters - they are “acting”, in real life often very different personalities, some of them real “levies”.
An Alpha Male wouldn’t suit me as a partner, confident and successful of course, also caring and understanding.

I think Ant Middleton is an alpha male. ?

I've been very disappointed when I've thought of actors as Alpha males, real hero's. Then you read about them in the media or see them doing a tv interview. They are nothing like the characters they play and often have a drippy personality

I think the wrong people are answering! Other males sense an"alpha" male as it were. Binman/doctor/cop/Mr average in a boring office job.all may be "alpha" it's intangible and in my experience women simply go for those they would like to "breed" with (!?!) Not necessarily an "alpha" just someone they find irresistibly attractive. So? All men can be the best that can , a few have that "something" that sets them apart, ask the blokes!

Greeneyedgirl,

Or lions, tigers, any pack/herd animals that have a leader that fought, & possibly killed, to get there!!
Not something I'd be happy with, I'm sure!

Paul Newman is an enigma. He seems to be somewhat alpha and has played alpha males but is he really? He stayed with Joanne Woodward all his life and alpha males tend to change partners. I'm not sure about him.
As for alphas being psychopaths, you do realise that a psychopath actually has something wrong with their brain, or something different anyway. I don't think alphas are always psychopaths, although some obviously will be.

As the Original Poster I've been quite surprised at some of the comments to this thread, I certainly didn't expect such an in depth analysis of an Alpha Male, obviously a lot of different opinions, Many thanks to everyone who posted.

I read that Dinahmo. It appears that many described traits of so called “alpha males” also seem a neat fit for “psychopath” traits!

Matt Hancock?

Steve McQueen was an alpha male, and the King of Cool as well.

“ I think that most of you have got the wrong idea and most of your selections don't fall into the Alpha Male category.”

I agree.

Three definitions of an Alpha male.

An alpha male is a man who takes charge, one who imposes his will on others, not the other way round. ... An alpha male intimidates, he's unquestionably in charge, no matter what the situation. An alpha male is loud, brash, doesn't care what anybody else thinks.

Alpha male sign 1) He often talks in a way that puts other people down. Alpha male Sign 3) He seeks approval. Alpha male Sign 4) He never knows where his keys and wallet are. Alpha male Sign 5) The complainer.

Highly intelligent, confident, and successful, alpha males represent about 70% of all senior executives. Natural leaders, they willingly take on levels of responsibility most rational people would find overwhelming. But many of their quintessential strengths can also make alphas difficult to work with. Their self-confidence can appear domineering. Their high expectations can make them excessively critical. Their unemotional style can keep them from inspiring their teams. That’s why alphas need coaching to broaden their interpersonal tool kits while preserving their strengths.

The third is from Harvard Business School.

I think that most of you have got the wrong idea and most of your selections don't fall into the Alpha Male category.

The Kray brothers in the true sense not that I would fancy them.
Marlon Brando
In a good way, Paul Newman those blue eyes could persuade anybody.
Robert de Nero in the parts he has played.
My grandfather was difficult to know and had to be right but as soft as clarts with my gran not so with the family. He did not approve of a family members choice of husband so stayed in bed on the wedding day.

Some famous names that have come back to me…eventually. grin

Bruce Springsteen.
Pierce Brosnan.
Andy Murray.

I don’t think I said they wouldn’t be pleasant. Charm towards women would probably one of their prime characteristics.
But definitely competitive towards other men.

There’s an old saying:

When two men say Good Morning, one of them wins.?

Hobbs1 Mon 28-Jun-21 16:31:32

Tom Hardy ?

Peasblossom You've hit the nail on the head. They could be someone fanciable but definitely not a pleasant person.

Why would they not be a pleasant person? That's a huge generalisation. I'm sure there are many alpha males who are nice people, and also many who may be too alpha and overwhelming.

SueDonim Mon 28-Jun-21 15:25:46

I can’t say that I’ve ever given that much thought to alpha maledom (have I invented a new term?) so I had a quick Google and found this, about the myth of the alpha male, which I thought very interesting. greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/the_myth_of_the_alpha_male

I thought of a few people that might fit that profile but I’ve forgotten them now. grin If I remember, I’ll come back.

Sean Connery must be the ultimate alpha male!
And what about Tom Jones?

Tom Jones?? Yuck!

Whether you fancy Tom Jones or not is irrelevant. He is an alpha male. You will not fancy all of them.

I hope I wouldn’t ! That would be rather promiscuous of me !

You know what… I don’t think we should even apply the alpha male epithet to humans,
