Wear blue eyeshadow and eat margarine.

I learned to play backgammon because I read that Omar Sharif loved it. Although he was 22 years older than me I thought that if we'd met he would have been captivated but I don't think the middle of Lancashire was ever on his list of places to visit! His loss obviously grin

We lived in a not very nice area of Birmingham. I was convinced George Harrison would move in next door and we would get married grin

Drove my Fiesta from Chartres to Amiens, Calais, Folkestone, Greater Manchester. Just a short kip in a service area. Inside 24 hours and all by myself, in my mid-50s.

Swim in the sea with new jeans on to shrink and bleach them.
Search my car for loose change to buy a packet of soup.
Clean my contact lenses and wash my hair with washing up liquid.
Hop on and off planes like buses all over the world for work with two young children at home.
Have 5 male friends around at 5 in the morning for a full English and fizz for the first and last Grand Prix of the year.

Sit in warm water in the bath in new Levi jeans, to get them to fit well.

Walk everywhere.

Juggle a full time responsible job with children and home, and still have more energy than I do now.

Wonderful thread…..it makes me think though that for all the fun and laughter along the way we should all just lighten up now and go with the flow. Because we are the lucky ones to still be here it’s a privilege.

I did the sellotape on my fringe and ironing my hair on the ironing board. Wore American Tan tights and petticoats, my GD 16 was watching a cartoon film with me yesterday and one of the girls was showing her petticoats and she said “what’s she wearing under that dress?” I told her a petticoat and she said “what’s it for?” ?

Drink sterilised milk and enjoy it. Eat sugar sandwiches.

ElderlyPerson the chow mein thingy that needed frying were called crispy noodles ( as opposed to the sloppy ones that were also included) and they puffed up in a frying pan in about 30 seconds ! My very new husband ( at the time ) and I ate these delicacies when we were doing up our first rented flat courtesy of East Kilbride Development Corporation ! Happy days - and no indigestion !

use cash to pay for things.

shysal Thu 01-Jul-21 15:02:54

Have an 18inch waist and thought I was fat!

Sleep in a head full of spiky plastic rollers.

Love the crispy noodles in Vesta Chow Mein.

Wear high heels when on my feet all day.

Wear a woollen swimsuit knitted by my mother

DanniRae Thu 01-Jul-21 15:05:41

One day I borrowed my mum's figure enhancing Silhouette Little X girdle to hold up my stockings at school. A string quartet came to give a recital in the gym (yawn!). Luckily I escaped when the girdle cut off my circulation to the point that I was carted off to sick bay in a faint.

Scentia Thu 01-Jul-21 15:16:09

Have my bath as a kid once a week in a tin bath that hung outside in the back yard.
Drank so much socially through the 80s and early 90s, suffering terrible hangovers. I’m practically teetotal now.

Sleeping with rollers in my hair, I had pulled them all out by morning usually
I loved Vesta Chow Mein as well.
Drinking rum and blackcurrant- disgusting hangovers the next day
Wearing a girdle for no good reason as I was slim then.

jaylucy Thu 01-Jul-21 16:05:28

Wear lip gloss that was so sticky that you used to have to prize your lips apart just to speak
Use mousse on my hair to try and get it to hold any type of curl
Sleep in rollers(see above, neither worked)
Wear shiny highlighter that looked like white stripes across my cheekbones
Wear tights of any description
Wear shoes/sandals with anything above a 2 inch heel (ankles won't cope!)

jaylucy Thu 01-Jul-21 16:07:36

Cinzano/ Martini either my drink of choice until I got drunk on my 21st birthday after "friends" decided it would be fun to buy me doubles! Never again!

Greeneyedgirl Thu 01-Jul-21 16:07:39

What a great nostalgia post.
Used to sit in a bath of potassium permanganate to try and dye my lily white legs brown. Wear white lipstick, and yes LOVE Vesta chow mein too.

Dryginger Thu 01-Jul-21 16:13:02

Used to wear tights with different coloured knickers attached.
Wear navy or choc brown tights with long white socks over them.
Put nail varnish to stop ladder running in said tights
