Used to be so poor as a teenager I had one set of underwear and had to wash it in the basin and dry the items on the tank overnight to wear in the morning. I also attended more schools than there are school years. We moved a lot.
Oh that reminds me of the time I'd no clean tights for the morning, so I washed them by hand in the bathroom, just using the hand soap, rinsed them out and stuffed the legs with a towel to absorb the moisture and speed up drying.
Anyway, first forward to the following morning. I'm wearing open toe shoes with a little punched hole design on the top. It starts to rain while I'm hurrying to the office. I notice people looking at me and stifling laughter. Looking down I see my feet are a mass of soap suds, oozing through the punched holes, where I'd clearly not rinsed the soap out properly

Wore mini.mini, mini skirts that barely covered anything with Stilettos.
Became a groupie for about 6 months when an older friend let me astray
Had 5 jobs at the same time and rarely felt tired
Fell out with my lovely mother again and again until I left home, then we became best of friends.
Left my birth country at 18 years of age without thinking twice about it
I bought my first pair of high heels when I was 15. I felt so grown up. I asked my mom how I looked. She replied - Ridiculous

I think that I did all the make-up, prickly rollers, sellotape and miniskirt things., remember never daring to go upstairs on a bus as skirt was so short. Does anyone remember thick diamond-patterned either stockings or tights?
At grammar school, I had long hair held in a ponytail by quite a thick ponytail clip. This made wearing a beret virtually impossible. Ended up using kirby grips to hold it on. Must have looked like a navy blue pancake stuck on my head. Used to take it off on the bus going home. I think my dad lost count of the times he had to drive me to transport lost property office to claim my beret back.
I was really self-conscious at being flat-chested, first bra was from Woolworths and had tiny pink roses on it, I also was the last girl in my class to start her periods, mortifying at the time. When at Uni I shared a house with 2 girls, we decorated the living room using wrapping paper, we had mice in the offshot kitchen and the bathroom was enormous with a huge gas-fired geyser for hot water. I was terrified that it would explode each time that I had to use it.
I read in a magazine that egg was very good to condition hair, unfortunately, they omitted to mention that you should use cold water, I used hot and had bits of poached egg in my very dark hair before a date with a rather dishy boy. So that never happened!!, spent the evening picking egg out of my hair. I also used to spend quite a lot of the evening in the ladies toilets trying to stick my false eyelash back on, when on a night out. Does anyone else remember Aquamanda perfume it smelt of oranges?
Elderly person ... Yes me too , 9 hour working days plus lunch break was the norm . Now it's practically unheard of .
Can't believe I used to sleep all night every night.
I wore black, lace up school shoes, grey knee high woolen socks and a gym slip.
Sweetness 1 I had a brown wrapover suede miniskirt with two rows of popper fastenings and a scalloped hem. I loved it and wore it constantly.
Later I passed it on to my daughter.
To my great surprise I found it again a couple of weeks ago in with my four year old granddaughter's dressing up clothes! It still looks as good as new.
All so very true. I was born in1954 and can relate to everything ! Lovely thread this, I could read this every day.
What a wonderful thread of memories, most of which I did too!
I was late home from a date once with my was DH, by 2 minutes and father stopped me going out for 2 weeks.
Wandering round the country lanes of Jersey, drunk at 5am trying to find my way back to my bedsit.
So many memories and I still use Rive Gauche!
I was born 1949 and can remember most of the things mentioned, especially my Dads raised eyebrows at the length of my skirt. Aquamanda perfume certainly brought back a blast from the past. My very favourite item of clothing was a imitation leather coat in grey and white animal stripe effect, very short with a fringed hem.

The first few minutes were a real trip down memory lane! I remember the old metal bins, no bags, no plastic, no wheels. The men actually had to carry the bins.
Amazing how no-one thought to put wheels on them, or wheels on suitcases too......until eventually they did! Everyone used to carry their heavy suitcases.
Wear loon trousers with homemade 'insets' I cut the side seam and sewed in a triangle of flowery fabric to make them even wider.
Wore hotpants and oxford bags in bold checks with red wooden soled platform clogs: I must have looked like the bottom half of a clown
Wore Mary Quant and Biba eye make up in bright green
Danced all night and went to work on very little sleep
Was tall and slim, now seem to be short and fat
Chesnut we seemed to have had less rubbish then too.
Sorry I meant Chestnut.!
Less rubbish because we drank from taps and nothing was pre-packed. You bought your meat, cheese, everything fresh and wrapped in paper. And we simply didn't have the huge amount of 'things' that are available to buy today. Fewer things were manufactured, there were fewer shops, and there was not the choice we have now.
Fish and chip shops in summer only using new potatoes. These days its fashonable to eat food thats in season as if thats some thing new those days we had no choice.
Perfumes bring back many memories, Gingham was a favourite of mine, Brut for my DH, dancing at discos which we would drive miles to get to.
Helena Rubinstein’s Apple blossom can conjure up memories of my mum.
I remember buying my granny some perfume (with a connection to violets ) in a very tiny bottle. This was always for sale in seaside shops in those days.
Going back to the Vesta meals beef risotto with a touch of marmite added was my favourite, followed by artic roll and my drink of choice was a Cherry B, now I can’t bare anything cherry flavoured and only eat food made from scratch.
Gingham perfume! Crikey I remember that. Doused myself in it, the reek in clubs discos as we all danced and sweated in our polyester, bathed in cheap perfume and after shave! And smoked on the dancefloor; it's a wonder we didn't all combust in a cloud of cheap perfume and clothes
Most of the things mentioned already. Those were the days when we were all just ourselves!!
After eating winkles I would fish out the black round bit, save it, and then before I went dancing I would attach it to my face and instantly I had a beauty spot! and amazingly it stayed on all night. Another vote Vesta meals.
