Good Morning everyone from another hot, blue day in Southern Franceland.
Our trip to the Préfecture in Montpellier went surprisingly well not too much of a problem on the roads and there was a wonderful cool breeze which helped with the necessary mask wearing. The city looked its wonderfully picturesque self and there was even music in some of the squares again. I had no time to spend window shopping, unfortunately. It was necessary to be on time. Saved a coffee stop to a café outside the gates of where we were going. After 10 minutes and no coffee (!) I went and spoke to the waiter telling him where we were due (in 5 minutes) and he produced coffee and a complimentary cookie like a rabbit out of a hat! 3 jolly armed Policemen questioned our arrival, inspected our bags and we were then escorted to a seat by a lady with a clipboard. Bit more sensible than pre-Covid/pre-Brexit, when the building resembled life on a Middle Eastern market day!
Couldn’t see the official at our desk because of steamy glasses, reflection off the plastic screen, couldn’t hear him due to thickness of screen, his mask, baby crying offstage left, and then got slightly giggly trying to read and sign an allegiance (to France under my photograph! ). That’s new.
Whilst waiting for very young English guy to submit his application ahead of us, noticed his name on a hanging tag on his bag. Later googled the (slightly unusual) name to see he was/is the Shropshire Open Water swimmer - Hector Pardoe - now training in Montpellier before the Tokyo Olympics.
It, the paperwork due to us being English, and the UK now being a third country, is a monumental pain. (Jax and Fennel) but I’d never want to live in any country not complying with the rules for residence. Here in France they are ‘paperwork’ mad. I’d hate to think that one day, the tax authorities, Police, social security etc., might spot that I was breaking the rules and give them the chance to interfere with my life plans. ☹️
Telephone calls can be really upsetting, Susan. Hope it’s all calmed down again. You can only, sometimes against impossible odds, do your best.
Lots of you lucky souls away or going away. A definite move towards normality. Sounds like a great trip, Lins, something to lift the spirits! Enjoy yourselves GMers, whatever you’re up to, every moment of it.
Going to pick up behind DH, who is trimming 3 big shrubs outside. He’ll then cut the grass and we’ll go to the dump. Sprinklers then on. Called in to a massive, well-stocked Garden Centre yesterday and bought another Clematis (Tie Dye) there are so many varieties now. Another hole to dig!
I’m attaching photos, of our destination yesterday, including a pot containing my favourite kind of Olive tree outside the Café. My iPad is about to expire and photos are sideways….so sorry.
Have a Fun Friday, peeps. Stay safe! X
