Recalled for a further appointment after a routine mammogram
Hi all
Just starting this
Let’s see how we go
Come on England!!
Much the same for me GrowingoldDisgracefu
The "sport" bit sometimes gets lost! I like watching tennis, basketball and various other sports but not so much football because of all the money involved and , sadly, bad behaviour of some fans. I don't understand:
Players taking off their silver medals - surely it's a great achievement
England fans attacking Italian supporters after the match ( not sure how much of that was on BBC - friends in Italy posted videos)
GNs having a go at players or each other
This was surely a light-hearted thread.
I am a football virgin, so to speak. I watched the game yesterday and the England - v- Denmark semi final game and admit that I don't know the rules, and these are the only games I've ever watched. . However, I thought the Italian team were very dishonourable in their behaviour, all the deliberate tripping, grabbing at the England players from behind, and the Italian player who grabbed the neck of the shirt of the England player, pulling him over. Isn't that cheating, and why wasn't the player in that latter incident sent off? So I don't see that as an honourable win, rather that it was won by cheating.
As for the racist abuse, that is disgusting, particularly in regard to Marcus Rashford, who has worked so hard to ensure that children have been fed. All so wrong.
Oh how I loathe football - so boring! Luckily I had the end of the tennis to watch & a good film afterwards. DH was in his study with his TV on & I heard a good few ohs & aahs so I knew it was not going too well.
. I was thinking you had an interesting friendship group.
Sometimes you get what you want, sometimes you get what you need and sometimes you just get what you get. I think we did very well indeed and should be proud of themselves. I imagine everyone hates penalties. It seems such an unsatisfactory way to decide a game. I don’t have any other suggestions though except maybe a rematch but logistically probably not viable. Would a draw be so bad?
My friends period was supposed to say funeral! God she'd have laughed at that!
I wonder (quite often on here I have to say) why people have to be so spiteful ( Harmonypuss )
We have European flags bunting up
I got a little bit teary when they played songbird at the end of the BBC coverage but Eva was played at my friends period (I'm presuming it was Eva Cassidy's version as Fleetwood Mac are probably too expensive...now I have written this I am now wondering if FM still have to agree..oh well copyright law is not my strong point, if it falls under copyright law...yes Gareth Southgate seems like a lovely chap)
The most inane slogan ever!
Maybee that made me laugh, my family were laughing at me last night because I was saying I wanted to take the young players home and make them something nice to eat. As obviously that would have helped
@Millie
I've just taken my England flag down from the window and can't stop crying. It's mainly the disappointed children up and down the country who love football and also it was great to see everybody happy and smiling.
Crying? Really? It was a game of football for 'crying' out loud, anyone would think your puppy had died!

I know what you mean. I didn’t really understand, though, why there was so much expectation that England would win, although I hoped they would. I couldn’t even watch the game properly as I was so nervous. In retrospect they did unbelievably well and the team, their manager and everyone else involved have been inspirational and will continue to be so. I just feel for the lads in the team though: I know they’re grown men who earn huge amounts of money, but I just wanted to tuck them up in bed with a cup of cocoa and tell them everything will be ok!
I'm pleased that 3 of our players missed their penalties. Can you imagine how someone would have felt if they'd been the only one!!
Gareth missed his penalty in the Euro's 1996 against Germany, I think he was the only England player to do so and the poor man has never been allowed to forget it, by some at least.
On more than one occasion when being interviewed over the last few weeks, he's been asked about it. Prompting Alan Shearer to write an open letter saying the team should have won the match in 90 minutes, and having failed to do so, should have won in extra time. They didn't and lost the penalty shoot out. It's a team game. If they win, they win as a team and if they lose, they lose as a team.
I’m with you BigBertha. Why do people put an ‘er’ in the middle?
And now it’s all over. People are apportioning blame, but it is after all a match between 2 teams, one will win, and one will come 2nd (not lose). I was disappointed that England didn’t win, but just think of the joy they’ve brought to us over these last few weeks.
Franbern, Frank Skinner (who wrote the song lyrics with David Baddiel) explained that "It's coming home" meant that the Euro '96 tournament was being played in the UK. Nothing to do with winning, just location.
Over the years the lyrics have been rewritten and the perceived meaning has changed.
Well as we all now know it didn’t come home.
I’m afraid that once it gets to penalty shoot outs I lose interest. They might just as well draw straws.
Back to the rugby for me, although I do feel for the football team.
Galaxy
What a decent man Gareth Southgate seems to be. He makes me quite proud.
I'm not a football fan at all but he seems a very decent man. I actually worry about him, he still seems weighed down by the penalty he missed (I haven't a clue what or when it was) and I hope this isn't the same. He doesn't deserve to be criticised, it is a lonely job.
I know Millie it was a disappointment but, think about it, we got the silver medal and Gareth and the Team did brilliantly. There will be more to come
Really cannot understand the slogan 'it's coming home'. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to explain what this means.
As for crying because the team were beaten - not sure how it really affects anyone's life in any way whatsoever, whatever the result had been. Perhaps someone could explain how their lives would have been different if the English team had won.
Personally, I think this young team did brilliantly and should be very proud of their runner-up end status - although I do understand that there were a couple of serious queries about their journey. Sure it is the same for other teams.
I do like sport and am looking forward to the olympics, but did find it slightly OTT this last couple of weeks with the combination of both Wimbledon and the Football - so much admit I am pleased to see afternoon tv nearly back to normal today.
Yes Millie wasnt it nice to be a part of such happy enthusiasm? Seemed like everyone was touched by it.
Well, not everyone as some posts on here show

MaizieD people are free to comment on any thread they like but this thread I presume was started as a lighthearted attempt for football followers to join in banter during the match.
It seems a bit sour for someone to come on with mean comments.
I have no interest in threads about soaps, games, depression, estrangement, cakes, etc, but wouldn't go one to spout my unwanted opinion.
Couldn't agree more!

25Avalon agree with your assessment, Gareth didn’t manage that too well, unusually, he’s been brilliant all the way through up until those decisions.
Premiership starts in four weeks and World Cup next year ??.
