Blooming flies

I heard if you put a clear bag with 1/2 pence pieces in a bag of water it deters flies from coming into your home because if the fly sees the bag it makes them look massive.
Works at the moment from the back garden,but if the front door is opened in they come.
Can`t find a spot to secure at the front up to now.

I have citronella candles around the house and they seem to be keeping the flies and bugs away.

Friends in rural Devon with fields full of sheep nearby, used sticky fly papers in the kitchen.
Unfortunately they always hung one low and very close to a crockery cupboard, so more than once when accessing said cupboard I forgot that the vile thing was there and got it stuck in my hair - complete with dead and dying flies…?

We had a problem with flies a few years ago, we rolled up a newspaper and taught the flies to read A B C dead! Worked as well as anything else I've come across.

Our Jack Russell was the most brilliant fly catcher/ deterrent. Sadly, he is no longer with us so it's now down to chasing around with a rolled up newspaper.

I spray them with Dettox when they come in as they always go to the windows.

At first I was plagued with them at my holiday static home, which is close to farmland. Someone suggested a fragrance diffuser as it disorientates them. It actually works! If my home is empty for several weeks (e.g. during lockdown) then there are some but far fewer than before. I also have an Airwick Freshmatic Autospray.

I'm driven mad with flies in the kitchen. No dung heaps near me either.

I was going to put up a hanging curtain of some sort but our patio doors from the kitchen to the garden open inwards which makes it all a bit difficult.

Has any kind OP got any bright ideas as to how I can get around this? I'll have to do whatever needs doing myself so it needs to be fairly simple.

I've noticed more flies indoors this year, no dungheap near either. I make sure food is not left out uncovered, the sink tidy bins lid is on. I don't leave doors open and if any come in, then the room is shut off and windows opened till they've gone.

I use stand up insect killers with sliding grill type cover you gradually move up the containeras the season goes on. Also the stick on disc type. Seem to be effective as the only flies I see are dead ones on the windowsills in the morning.

Fly spray. Can’t be as bad as Lidl fresh bread today flies all over bread so have gone without!

We hang up fly catchers down the garden - buy from Amazon “Red Top” they work really well

Food covers.

I have a window on a bathroom that is left open all year but I have it covered in net and velcroed around sides... sorts out wandering spiders. In the kitchen it is fruit flies that are a nuisance and very hard to catch. For these I use a dilute mix of good apple cider vinegar/water and dash of fairy liquid = into a glass covered with cling film with a few hole made with a pencil. Bigger flies I open doors and let them wander elsewhere if I am feeling kind!

Living where we do we have been plagued by flies and tried everything. By trial and error we have found the only solutions are open the windows, they congregate there as they want to get out. The revolting sticky spirals that are the most effective. Good covers and then learnt to live with them.

I have a mesh screen on the back door. It has central opening with magnetic closure and works magnificently. Walk through and it closes behind me every time. This is its second summer and it remained up all winter/ tied back.
It looks tidy and clean. DH wasn’t so sure at first but is now a convert.
Was about £20 off Amazon.

We have one of these, too. It's worth every penny. No flies. ?

Rolled up Newspaper might do the trick

Whitewave I read on GN recently, that an iPad has replaced a rolled-up newspaper!

I have cheap Velcro fixed fly screens on any open doors and what a difference it makes. Windows more difficult but you may be able to get screens for them too.

I also have one of those multi-coloured strip door-screens, I’ve used it successfully for 9 years now. It flutters in the breeze at the back door, which is open most of the time so my dog can come and go. No flies, and it looks very cheerful.

Buy a couple of carnivorous plants (pitcher plants are best). Very satisfying to hear the plant buzzing as a fly is caught. And they’re attractive.

I hate them with a vengeance, I have a fly swatter in every room of the house except the loo/ bathroom. I use one from the bedroom if they appear here.

Strange....... I was just thinking I haven't seen a single fly or wasp this year and I live semi rurally. Tons of bees though.

We use fly papers, a bug lamp, available from most DIY stores, and a fly swatter.

Keeping all food covered even if it only stands out for a minute while you are preparing a meal helps.

Otherwise sugar dissolved in water in a jam jar or shallow bowl traps flies.

With a field of cows nearby, I would consider mosquito or fly nets on all windows - they can be bought in standard sizes that fit most modern windows.

If you have an old house where the screens don't fit, you should be able to buy nylon net by the metre from any dress-making shop that sells material. I did for our boat and we attached the nets by sewing velcro to the nets and the other side of the velcro we glued to the window frames.

I guarantee no flies, wasps, bees or midges will get past that system, it kept two cats on board too!

Nandalot and Hooty (nice to see Lincolnshire represented by the way) I think those horrible little black things are called thrips. Never seen them anywhere else.
