Shower gel

Bear with me, I haven’t quite lost the plot at the end of term!
I’ve just spent several mornings with Y6 girls who brushed their teeth, spat, rinsed their toothbrushes and brushed again ‘to make sure all the gunk’s gone’. I mentioned that they were brushing the fluoride away and was met with incredulity. ‘If you keep the gunk in your mouth it’s bad for your teeth!’
So what’s that to do with shower gel?
Our shower gel says, nourishing, moisturising etc, but I rinse it off. Should I be leaving the lather on to get the benefit?

They are just saying that the product is more ‘moisturising, nourishing’ etc in comparison to other detergents that you may use on your skin.
They are all drying to some extent, so the answer is no

So many of these bathroom products are completely unnecessary. Use soap, drink water. That's all you need.

Casdon Fri 16-Jul-21 08:50:28

Not a chance kircubbin. What you say may be true to keep your body clean and your bodily functions working, but is so utterly dull, life should contain small pleasures.
Some shower gels have moisturiser incorporated, so your skin is both clean and moisturized after a shower, but you still need to rinse it off. I like Aveeno.

Oh I do agree Casdon. Who doesn’t like the small pleasures such as your favourite teacup, a bath/shower gel that smells nice, clean sheets, clothes made of nice fabrics.

Totally off topic sorry I’m feeling a bit chirpy this morning.

No. Rinse it off.
So many shower gels have stuff in that's not great for you such as parabens.

You'd better go and lie in a darkened room until it passes. grin

I get what you are saying ! I don’t rinse off toothpaste , just a good spit , but I do rinse off shower gel , if I use it !

That’s lovely Lucca
Why don’t you start a thread?

(Oddly enough, I’m feeling rather chipper too; I’m even giving the bathroom a deep clean; struggling with all the various bottles and jars of unguents though…)

I never used shower gel for years just soap. Then I had some samples from hotels so tried them. I was amazed how much softer my skin felt after the shower gels, so then went over to using them.

If your using any product containing a non sustainable palm oil, your contributing to this.

I use natural soaps and bar shampoos, no chemicals. I do rinse off.
I do not rinse all the toothpaste out , just a good spit.
Talking of toothpaste, do any of you brush your tongue as well ?

Mollygo Fri 16-Jul-21 10:14:09

I choose which shower gel, or more recently bars, to buy because I like the smell. I never believed something I rub on/wash off would do all the nourishing and moisturising it claims on the packet, but I admire the sales spiel.

MissAdventure Fri 16-Jul-21 10:44:06

I just use soap.
It's cheaper.

JaneJudge Fri 16-Jul-21 10:47:08

if you didn't rinse the lather off wouldn't you start sticking to things and get covered in dog hair

Scribbles Fri 16-Jul-21 11:23:39

I can't imagine not rinsing my mouth out after tooth cleaning; surely the residual toothpaste clinging to your teeth will make your next food or drink taste of toothpaste? Which is a big Ugh for me. Coffee and Colgate? No thanks!

I use shower gels or creams after I realised they leave much less grey scum in the bath/shower than soap. Fenjal is my favourite.

?? I don’t encounter many dogs when I exit the shower

Mollygo Fri 16-Jul-21 11:56:24

I had some caramel scented shower gel from France. Our dog wanted to wash it off me!

wildswan16 Fri 16-Jul-21 12:53:27

You need to get someone to teach these young ladies that it is recommended by dentists not to rinse all the toothpaste out.

If they really want to rinse and spit to get rid of the "gunk", then maybe they could be encouraged to rebrush a second time with a little toothpaste and leave that on.

Shower gel/soap etc definitely need rinsed off.!

adaunas Fri 16-Jul-21 13:26:39

Wildswan16 I did indeed mention that to them. At this time of year, if they’re not crying about leaving, Y6, think they know everything.
“Oh we know about not rinsing.”
“That’s the latest, then it’ll be something else.”
“But gunk in your mouth? That’s bad!” was the general feeling.

nadateturbe Fri 16-Jul-21 13:35:57

Yes, I brush my tongue.
I have a few different shower gels/ moisturising washes and enjoy using them but still mostly use Tesco pure soap. I've just been given a lovely bar of Green Angel seaweed soap and look forward to trying it.

eazybee Fri 16-Jul-21 17:23:41

It is the comfort of small things.

I was inordinately thrilled when found a hand wash in M & S that tones with the lime green towels in my newly refurbished (after 33 years ) en-suite. It smells nice too.

Witzend Sat 17-Jul-21 13:29:39

I nearly always use nice creamy bar soap, sheer habit, but now also because of anti-plastic.

However I do have some Badedas 3-in-1 shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, which I take away for a night or two. Few such occasions lately, needless to say.

Maggiemaybe Sat 17-Jul-21 14:42:01

At the risk of sounding preachy, I avoid disposable plastic whenever possible so always use bar soap, shampoo and conditioner. There are so many lovely ethical options out there these days, I don’t see that I’m missing out on anything.
