It is hard to resist a bit of gossip.

"If you can't say anything good about anyone come and sit next to me." (to misquote Alice Roosevelt Longworth).

Mollygo very thought-provoking.

They were told that it’s like that old game of passing on a whisper, where everyone adds their own interpretation, multiplied by millions

And that reminded of the apochryphal tale from WW1 or WW2 where each radio operator would listen to a command and then repeat it to the next operator in a series:

Send reinforcements. We are going to advance.
Ended up as:
Send three and fourpence. We are going to a dance.

I believe the original is usually said as
Is it true?
Is it kind?
Is it necessary?
Sometime something which is necessary can be said in a kindly way.
This advice is always quoted by Armand Gamache in the Louise Penny books. I just love them!

Mollygo you have a truly good, sensible DGD?

Oopsadaisy ?

So that just leaves the Times and Financial Times, left for us to read. All other Newspapers will be put out of business (and that’s a good thing).

Oh I think you can tell, is it something made you sad or wonder , is it something helpful that can aid things or just cause a breakup , if it’s true does it need telling or can it be turned round and corrected

Yes I am not criticising them, it just made me think, some of the most useful things that have been said to me would not have been seen as kind.

True, but they’d just had a lesson on use and misuse of social media. According to her teacher, truths or untruths put on the Internet can easily be modified to say what you want it to say. They were told that it’s like that old game of passing on a whisper, where everyone adds their own interpretation, multiplied by millions.
I think their teacher is doing a good job, especially so near the end of term.

I think we should all use the 3 sieves system. Gossip can cause unnecessary damage.

In Ancient Greece, Socrates had a great reputation of wisdom. One day, someone came to find the great philosopher and said to him:
- Do you know what I just heard about your friend?
- A moment, replied Socrates. Before you tell me, I would like to test you the three sieves.
- The three sieves?
- Yes, continued Socrates. Before telling anything about the others, it's good to take the time to filter what you mean. I call it the test of the three sieves. The first sieve is the TRUTH. Have you checked if what you're going to tell me is true?
- No, I just heard it.
- Very good! So, you don't know if it's true. We continue with the second sieve, that of KINDNESS. What you want to tell me about my friend, is it good?
- Oh, no! On the contrary.
- So, questioned Socrates, you want to tell me bad things about him and you're not even sure they're true? Maybe you can still pass the test of the third sieve, that of UTILITY. Is it useful that I know what you're going to tell me about this friend?
- No, really.
- So, concluded Socrates, what you were going to tell me is neither true, nor good, nor useful. Why, then, did you want to tell me this?
