Things that can be achieved from home using a home computer, an internet connection and a debit card

Things like grocery shopping, ordering clothes and shoes are well-known. What else can be achieved?

Oops apologies for quoting the OP. I’m engrossed in a murder story on the TV as well!

I met my partner through a dating site and we’ve been together for 18 years now and are extremely happy.

I use my PC to create spelling resources and sell them worldwide via the website I also created. My printer was quite expensive but the compatible ink is very cheap.

As my family live abroad it was expensive to send gifts from here. Thanks to Google translate I can easily order from the “river” site in Spain and it’s cheaper and quicker to buy gifts for delivery to Portugal.

I used Royal Mail pick up when it was free but you have to pay for it now.

Tax returns. Car tax. Passport. Driving licence. Access Medical history. The list goes on. ?

It is only 70p!

I'm obsessed with comparing and reducing bills of all sorts. Insurance, utilities, shopping etc. all regularly reviewed to make sure I'm on the cheapest rate possible.

My savings go to charities. It feels good to make a difference in the world.

I look at property online too. Choosing/comparing is easy with virtual tours, street view on Google Maps and neighbour sold prices. I'd only visit the final selection before actually buying.

Me too Lucca … and our local library is still click and collect only

I play Scrabble online with a friend who lives a long way from me and was alone during the lockdowns. And the National Archives sends me a little jigsaw to play online with its weekly newsletter.

Goodness only knows how we would get by without all the online tech now! Really like the car parking apps, online private gp services, click and drop royal mail stuff.

@tidyskatemum Thanks so very much for that! Will come in handy at Christmas. This time I've called this snail mail cheque (grrr, spit, hate) Summer Fun, to help the Grand fund her summer adventures before college, buy new garden furniture for her parents & the rest to be banked for whatever. I'm much too disabled to go there now so it's nice to gift from afar. Despite the distance we're all very close.

Communication: Emails. Particularly when several need to receive the message.

We had a lovely postcard the other day. Now that’s a rarity.

Can’t remember the last time I wrote or even typed and posted a letter to someone. DH still loves to write a letter (pen and ink too). He hates typing anything.

Epson printers have excellent Quality.

I do a lot of colour printing and the Epson Eco ET 2750 has been a revelation. More expensive to buy in the first instance but extremely economical with ink.

Something that has changed is the ability to subscribe to monitoring ink refill services. Those can save a lot of money.

Also, being able to subscribe to downloadable digital imaging software rather than having to buy it on disks and CDs.

tidyskatemum Thu 29-Jul-21 12:29:13

alishka I send money to DS in the USA using wise.com
The exchange rate is good and a transfer started in the morning is in the recipient’s bank account later in the day. As long as you have their bank details it’s a doddle.

online consultations with private GP's including receiving prescription by post/courier....also getting some prescription/pharmacy meds by online consultation. Same with the vet.

Yes it must be possible to do a PhD online- look at how widely known 'The Open University' is.

I too would like to know. Are we heading for a special thread?

Also, as well as what is usually thought of as the route to a PhD there is also PhD by Previously Published Work that some universities offer, some to only their own graduates, but at least one offers to graduates, specifically not only their own graduates.

Registering players to play for a football club, recording your results, entering your team stats, affiliating your team. None of this can be done without a computer. It was much easier for a club Secretary in the old days. Now the paid staff at the FA don’t do any of this anymore and it all has to be done by volunteers on a system that frequently fails. It gets revamped but doesn’t improve. As a business model it’s not good.

Ok rant over. It’s that time of year.

Marydoll Thu 29-Jul-21 11:42:52

I would be interested to hear too. I only needed another year to finish a PhD, but it was not to be, as the subject would have been based on my work with challenging children and I had to retire on ill health. ?

I am doing a PhD pretty much online!

Tell us more please!
Who is your provider?
How are you finding it, doing it remotely?
Thank you!

DG who lives in USA is 21 next week so this morning I have sent him a personalised card via Moonpig and then a cash amount via PayPal and DS. That way they get dollars and I pay in Sterling.

Is there a limit to the amount one can send to the US via PayPal, do you know?
I currently have a cheque in the post to my family in the US. Barclays refuse to transfer 4.000 bps - I need to go into the bank (with my passport or other verifying means of identification) to do that, apparently. NOT that they actually tell you they can't/won't do a transfer for that amount on their website. Oh no! They've credited the money back to my a/c - and charged me 4.00 for the privilege.grrrrr
Beyond peed off by this, actually.

It appears that one could actually get a (small?) book printed and some copies sent to oneself, one copy to The British Library for Legal Deposit, five copies to the Agent for the other five Legal Deposit Libraries and some others to whoever, all from a home computer without going out of the door!

MiniMoon Thu 29-Jul-21 10:05:50

Buying clothes, shoes, kitchen equipment, and loads of plants for the garden from the TV shopping channels.
I use my tablet and phone linked to the printer, if I need a label etc. I had an email from DSiL and printed him a returns label when his printer was on the blink. He only lives 5 minutes along the street so he popped in to collect it.
I honestly couldn't imagine life without the Internet these days.

Crossed posts, Maw! ?

Ah, but the bit about Italy was useful additional information.

aggie Thu 29-Jul-21 09:56:11

Transfer money to hard up child !

MawBe Thu 29-Jul-21 09:54:15

I think it’s about 70p - less than it would cost me to drive to a Post Office!
