Arachnophobia…

Just started a thread about this, could not post it and when I went back after refreshing it had just disappeared! So let’s try again.… A few months ago I moved my bedroom downstairs so that my son and his girlfriend could have my bedroom and use their bedroom as a lounge. I invested in some French doors and 1/2 is just a window with a skylight opening and the other half is an opening door, I am a bit concerned that the spiders might find it a bit easier to get to me now that I am downstairs so I have bought some peppermint oil That is mixed with water and liberally sprayed around the curtains, I have also put some oil on a piece of cotton wool and rub that round the frame of the window. I have had encounters with spiders in the past, once felt what I thought was a moth on my face, just nodding off and brushed it off and in the morning woke up to find a big spider about 3 inches from my face, also a blockage in my shower which I removed, being very shortsighted did not realise until I got out and looked in the sink where I had thrown it that it was again a big spider! Also I now never get into my bed since on getting into bed one night turning back the duvet there was a bloody great spider galloping up the bed and disappearing down the back of the headboard so now check pillows and duvet. As it is getting cooler I am sure they will be planning their route into my bedroom…??‍♀️??‍♀️?

I used to hit them with a shoe, but the electric bat thing is much easier to deal with them. It’s silly when you think of the size of them and the size of us, but there you are.?

MissAdventure Tue 21-Sept-21 19:17:28

I'm really not.
I often feel faint after dealing with a spider. My eyes swim for a bit and I have to sit down.
I am trying to take on slightly larger ones, bit by bit.

Good for you!
You are a brave lady.

MissAdventure Tue 21-Sept-21 19:09:59

An arm and a bats length.
That's a few feet, I think, and I'm a great shot with it, so I know there will be no shillyshallying around.

Sara1954 Tue 21-Sept-21 19:07:27

But MissAdventure, you have to get so close, literally an arms length away.

MissAdventure Tue 21-Sept-21 18:29:12

I have 2 electric bats. (Not the living kind!)
One by the sofa, and one in the hall.
Woe betide anyone who nicks the batteries out of them!

Sara1954 Tue 21-Sept-21 18:08:14

I read a lot about those plastic tubes, but even supposing they worked, you don’t have it with you all the time do you? By the time you’ve raced off to get it, the?could be ANYWHERE!!!

Sweetpeasue Tue 21-Sept-21 18:04:47

I'm another whose absolutely terrified of them. Have just bought one of those spider catchers with the plastic bristles on the end that are meant to close around. Have had 1 before and know all the drawbacks but the other suction gadget doesn't seem to work well either.
Had to ask my DH to throw plastic spider that came with it in the bin. Can't touch tomato tops either! I just KNOW I'm going to come across a monster 1 soon. ?

MissAdventure
The thought of any kind of aversion therapy terrifies me.

MissAdventure Tue 21-Sept-21 17:45:49

I think we all need therapy!
The thought of all those beasties hiding amongst all the clutter and pipes makes me feel a bit nauseous, genuinely.

Sara1954 Tue 21-Sept-21 17:42:57

MissAdvenure
Work is worse for me, open plan office space, but always a mess, with lots of stuff everywhere, big warehouse with really high ceilings, old plumbing, and lots of small rooms, all full.
I make my husband check out the toilets every morning before I can go to the loo.

MissAdventure Tue 21-Sept-21 17:30:02

grin
I keep constantly kicking my slippers off my feet, convinced there is a spider in there!

SueDonim Tue 21-Sept-21 17:27:58

I had a spider nightmare last night. I’m not sure exactly what was going on but I woke myself and Dh up by screaming in my sleep! ?

MissAdventure Tue 21-Sept-21 16:54:24

You'd hate my flat.
The council barely do any maintenance, and there are pipes, gaps, and holes everywhere on the outside of the building.
I try and fill them in as best I can inside, but it's an ongoing battle to keep creepy crawlies out.
I have a really strong insecticide I spray into any inaccessible gaps, but have found it results in things galloping out! shock

Sara1954 Tue 21-Sept-21 16:31:18

MissAdventure
I have a horror of gaps, I can’t buy anything unless is right on the floor, or far enough off the floor for me to see everything under it.

MissAdventure Tue 21-Sept-21 14:01:31

There was a spider in my kitchen sink today.
I'm getting really twitchy as my flat is not very well maintained and has pipes and gaps.
I keep reading about super sized, big hairy spiders being in abundance.
It's only a matter of time...

Shinamae Tue 21-Sept-21 12:30:33

I have never seen so many garden spiders, attached webs from my washing line to the fence so when I’m going out in the garden I have an old mop that I hold up in front of me as I walk along. If I see any on the actual washing line I will take a peg and gently remove them and put them on the fence that so many this year ?????

MissAdventure Sun 19-Sept-21 20:20:36

I must remember tomorrow to check before I go out the door, because I think old bobbly is respinning as we speak.
Hopefully my neighbour will forget and break up the web again though. blush

Amberone Sun 19-Sept-21 20:11:16

MissAdventure we had one of those stretched right across our kitchen door recently - fortunately for me OH went out before me and spotted it before walking into it ? The brown ones seem to surround the house at this time of year.

MissAdventure Sun 19-Sept-21 19:07:50

Oh no!
It was just tangled around her face.
I could hear her saying "What the bleedin' 'ell, you bugger!" as she tried to get it off her.
There is a recess, and the web was woven completely across it, at head level.

crazyH Sun 19-Sept-21 17:53:47

What ? Did she trip and fall on her face?

MissAdventure Sun 19-Sept-21 17:47:48

A spider (one of the bobbly ones that is coloured like a tabby cat) had woven a web right the way across my back door step.
When my neighbour came to peer through my window, she got it all wrapped around her face! grin

Bluebellwould Sun 19-Sept-21 16:01:36

I love spiders!
I currently have 28 on my sitting room ceilings with their beautiful webs catching the flaming mossies that I am plagued with as I live near a reservoir. I’m allergic to mosquito bites and end up looking like I’m covered with apples.
Not so keen on daddy long legs but my cat likes to play with them, lick their legs off and eat the whole lot.?

NotTooOld Sun 19-Sept-21 15:55:29

I have tried most of the grabby/sucky type spider "getters", and I know they rely on a non hysterical person at the other end.
Hence, my raquet.
Bang! Gone!

Non-hysterical, MissA? Is that even possible? I do have my electric raquet on standby but only to hand over to DH in cases of dire emergency, such as when there is no tissue to hand. He only picks them up with a tissue.

Conkers in the corner of the room works a treat. We lived in the countryside and used to get HUGE spiders at harvest-time. A local farmer told me this tip - it works!
