Check-list for the cleaner

I only cleaned that extensively for gite changeovers in France. My last cleaner, some years ago, never changed the bed or cleaned inside the fridge or kitchen cupboards. I emptied the kitchen bin. I would employ a window cleaner if I wanted the windows done.

I’m doing some cleaning work at the moment. I don’t clean out the fridge, clean windows or change bedding. I do empty the bin although I’ve not been asked to.

I was not assuming that anyone would want the cleaner to do all the tasks, but if you are unable to do things like changing bed linen, then it should be possible to pay someone to do it for you.

My father widowed at 82 could neither do his own washing nor hoovering and my sister and I lived too far away to do it for him on a regular basis, hence the cleaner.

I have personally never heard of anyone cleaning a kitchen or bathroom without emptying the bin, bur perhaps that is only considered necessary in Denmark.

I certainly always emptied bins when I went out as a cleaner.

I feel faint! But before I go and lie down, don’t forget whether cleaning the bathroom includes cleaning the trap in the shower - a hotly debated topic on a previous thread. And if you have kitchen cupboards like mine - matte dark grey (inherited) which show every fingerprint and drip of clean water, let alone anything else, they’ll need cleaning too. Why did I think they looked so stylish?

She does do skirting boards, and if you purchase a battery powered window cleaner, you can have sparkling windows with very little time or effort.

I agree Sarah but would like my windows cleaned and skirting boards/doors wiped occasionally if I was going to pay someone.

Judy
I agree, as far as I’m concerned I’m just buying time, and if she keeps it all clean, I’ve got some time for the other things that need doing.
I always empty and wash the bin before she arrives, and make everyone has a good tidy up, I don’t want to pay her to tidy.

Wow grandtanteJE65 that is quite a list. I would not expect a cleaner to empty and wash the kitchen bin, hoover the upholstered furniture every week or change the bedlinen. My priorities would be dusting and hoovering. I would empty and clean the fridge and pantry shelves myself. I do agree that it is best to discuss with the cleaner how long things would take and what else she/he is prepared to do. As long as my house is cleaned there would be no need for someone else to do my laundry, ironing or clean windows. Obviously it is up to the individual about what they want done around the house but your list is just to exhaustive for me.

If you are contemplating a cleaner, perhaps you will find it helpful to look through this list and decide what you need.

Every week:
Kitchen work surfaces to be washed down.
Kitchen floor swept and washed.
Kitchen bin emptied and washed.

Sitting-room dusted and hoovered, including hoovering of upholstered furniture

Bedroom floor hoovered and washed
Bedlinen changed
Room dusted

Bathroom and guest toilet cleaned
hand basins cleaned
Floors washed

Hall floor and front step washed

Once a month extra time allowed for
emptying and cleaning fridge
emptying and cleaning pantry shelves

Add any other items you need done and discuss with cleaner which of the above she does weekly and how long that takes, plus whether there are any of the above she is not prepared to do. You can also discuss whether she will do laundry, ironing, windows etc.

If you are not at home while she is working, discuss whether she should or should not answer phone, accept parcels etc.
