Dogs on beds

I know I shouldn't have when i got her last year but I did and now she's a nearly 18 month old who has more bed than me. She has her three walks a day and I sometimes hire the freedom field so she has of leash time. I talk to her and we play in the garden. She gives me her paw if she wants a treat and barks at the hoover still. She's a strong girlie but trys to sit on my lap or acooss me and loves soft toy play time and I love her.
My friend said she shouldn't be in the bed and I'm too close to her and she should be a dog, not spoken to like a human.
I'm not the only one surely ?

I miss our dog very much.

Eloethan Tue 21-Sept-21 23:47:15

I think it should be entirely your choice. It's got nothing to do with your friend.

Personally, I wouldn't mind a dog on the bed (but not in the bed - as I have seen in some YouTube clips).

I do think owners have to be a little careful of over-cossetting their dogs though because I think it can make the dog possessive and sometimes over-protective of their owner. I think I read somewhere, or heard on TV, that owners of small dogs can sometimes get in the habit of picking them up a lot. The dog interprets this as they are guarding their owner and can develop over-protective behaviour - growling, snapping, etc.

Each to their own, my dog and cats are welcome on my bed, but it really isn't anyone else's business.

Well, not End of the Bed, obviously.

(Sorry, couldn't resist ?)

grannylyn65 Tue 21-Sept-21 22:20:57

What does End of mean ?

Nonogran Tue 21-Sept-21 19:46:24

I worked with a woman whose dog slept on her bed. The lady always smelled doggy & I disliked working physically close to her because at times it was overpowering.
We love dogs, we have a dog. Our dog sleeps in her own bed. End of.

Just do what you want, it's no-one else's business. I don't have my dog upstairs because I'm a light sleeper, we'd probably keep waking each other up and actually he quite likes his own space. That said, my dog is an important member of my family and I love to have him cuddled on my lap!

Our dog loves to sleep on the landing which is a sun trap from the window daytime and stays warm at night. He does nudge our bedroom door though if he thinks we are sleeping in too late.

Our last dog always slept on our bed during the 14 years that we had her. Extra warmth in winter!
It did none of us any harm - all this fussing about ‘hygiene’ strikes me as really OTT.

Our previous dog slept on the floor beside my side of the bed - his choice - but as soon as you woke up in the morning he’d be up there with you. Even if you’d barely even opened your eyes, he knew.

Never had pets on the bed, but I would do ( possibly) if I lived alone.
In any case, it’s your life and your pet, so do as you like and take no notice if others in your life comment on it.
On the bed and in the bed are two different things.

I don`t have a dog, but my cats have always been allowed on the bed if they so wished. I love the feeling that my company is wanted/

MayBeRaw what a lovely snuggly photo and thank you everyone

Lincslass Tue 21-Sept-21 07:55:46

Can’t think of anything worse. Yuk.

tanith Tue 21-Sept-21 07:41:27

There are actually 3 threads on this? What is going on? Personally I wouldn’t have an animal on my bed but each to their own.

MayBeMaw Tue 21-Sept-21 07:39:29

Neen

When I got her, I'd never had the breed before and she just loves company, albeit invades personal space and I love her company.

She is lovely Neen I have a particular affection for long-nosed dogs, they are quite unlike “normal” dogs!

Says it all, really

I think you should do what every makes you, and your dog, happy. You're definitely not the only one as comments here show.
We have big dogs, over 30 kilos each, so sharing the bed is a tight squeeze. They usually only come up for 10 minutes then prefer the floor for sleeping. If my husband is away for work the dog always sleeps by my side (for protection, of course!)

Txquiltz Tue 21-Sept-21 06:57:59

It is entirely your decision. My dogs over the years slept with me and the companionship was wonderful. I can no longer physically care for a dog (walks, etc.) and miss the special love a dog shares every day.

Spice101 Tue 21-Sept-21 06:46:47

Your dog, your rules, no one else's business.

CafeAuLait Mon 20-Sept-21 23:54:14

My dog sleeps on my bed. I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't mind their dog germs, they don't mind my human germs. I talk to them. They're very communicative and part of the family.

Neen Mon 20-Sept-21 23:46:56

Two threads on this ?? Have I posted it twice by error

Chestnut Mon 20-Sept-21 23:44:16

Why not just keep the bedroom door shut. The idea of having an animal in your bed turns my stomach. If you could see all the non-human micro organisms between the fur and in the saliva maybe you wouldn't do it, but it's your choice of course. Just remember where they might have been sniffing and licking on their last walk.

Callistemon Mon 20-Sept-21 23:40:29

So there are!

Sometimes I post and it appears twice - did that happen with the two threads?

Granmarderby10 Mon 20-Sept-21 23:38:13

How come there are 2 identical threads on this? ?

Callistemon Mon 20-Sept-21 23:30:27

Our dogs didn't sleep on the beds, they stayed downstairs in their own beds.

But she should be a dog, not spoken to like a human

Of course you should chat to your dogs - they listen, (unlike some people), they know what you say, always look pleased when you chat and they rarely answer back.
