Do you dislike people who disagree with you?

Do you dislike people whose values or views don't align with yours?

Or do you dislike people purely because of how they speak to you, differences of opinion aside?

Answering my own question:

I tend to look at people more for what we do have in common and think, oh well we agree on this topic and they had interesting contributions or they gave some lovely comforting advice on that topic so generally won't be rude first and I do work hard not to be rude at all lol.

I always had to be tolerant at work, so got used to different views accepting them or coming to an arrangement.
I find people difficult to accept who have firm views on religion and lecture you expecting you to convert. 'DH worked with many people with different religions and we had to entertain, I tried to adapt the menu to be inclusive. Two of my friends were from minority religious groups and took some rap especially at bring and share buffets etc.
I do think I have got more bolshie as I have got older and will now air my views much more firmly and much to DH delight answer someone on the T.V. back or tell the washing machine to be quiet.

No usually but my closest very clever male friend, who I call !bloody awkward’ to his face, always seems to take the opposite point of view whatever it is for the sake of it. I keep off some topics as it can get heated.
Luckily we have lots of things we are both interested in.
I think he enjoys the mind bending debates and saves them for me.

Politically I have always described myself as a moderate, I think I'm part of that generation that's a bit of an equal split on a lot of issues.

Listening to my children and AC I'm starting to think I'm much more left leaning than I thought but I still like people who I don't agree with because I don't think it's always as simple and black and white as we think how people react to things.

Outright bigotry makes me unlikely to want to connect with people on a personal level

Unsure if you're talking about real life or forums OP.
Anyway, in both, I have no problem with those I don’t agree with and think there will be some subjects where we will find common ground.
Have noticed on GN posters saying things like ‘Never thought I would agree with ( insert name of poster) but on this I do’.
I always think that’s strange and a bit passive/ aggressive tbh.
There will be many things we can agree on, so I simply say I agree with them ( even though I may not, on the subject of politics.)
There seems to be a lot of hate shown to anyone who is a Conservative, and to Conservative MP’s on this forum, and no
( or very little) of the same directed at any other political stripe.Have noticed it getting worse and worse.
Not sure if it’s simply a result of the Conservatives winning every GE for a long time or something more unpleasant.
I don’t mind what politics or views friends and neighbours and fellow forum members hold, we are all very different and should be able to rub along.
It matters more to me that I like them and they are good decent people.

oops forgot to include you Doodledog.

As Gagajo says ...

I fourth it Rosie, Chewbacca and Iam.

sodapop Mon 18-Oct-21 09:17:27

I agree with Beswitched very few of my friends have views which are all the same as mine. We argue about some things but respect each other's point of view.
It would be so boring if we agreed on everything.

Blondiescot Mon 18-Oct-21 09:10:01

I'm with GagaJo on this. I can get along quite happily with people who have differing views on many subjects - but there are some where I draw the line, and that includes bigotry of any kind. I'm also always very sceptical of people who say they don't like animals. I know I'll get stick for saying that, but to me, it says a lot about them as a person.

Interesting replies so far

Thank you

I do not have a problem with people.....I don't like anyone??????

Iam64 Mon 18-Oct-21 08:40:39

Chewbacca

^I agree with Rosie.^
I also dislike passive aggression and thinly veiled digs.

I second that Doodledog.

I third it

One person’s rudeness is another person’s honest view.

Beswitched Mon 18-Oct-21 08:36:23

I can only think of one or two friends who would have the same view on most things as I would.

I have no problem with someone disagreeing with me as long as they're not rude or arrogant or sneery in the process.

Ali08 Mon 18-Oct-21 01:49:29

If I disliked everyone who had different views and opinions to me I'd probably have no friends, just clones!!

Chewbacca Mon 18-Oct-21 00:59:58

I agree with Rosie.

I'm friends with tons of people with whom I disagree on some aspect. I'd hate to be in an echo chamber of people who agreed with my every thought, how boring. As long as someone is honest and respectful of other's opinions then I will treat them the same. I cannot abide devious people who twist and turn facts and outright lie to make their point.

GagaJo Mon 18-Oct-21 00:27:34

Depends. Some things are fine to disagree on. Differences in way of life, religion (I don't have one but respect anyone else's choice in this area), culture. All fine. Great in fact. I'm always happy to learn new things.

Political views, I'm also OK with difference to a certain extent. But right-wing beliefs, no. I'm not tolerant of them. They're not about equality, they're about selfishness so not tolerable.

Some things are non negotiable though. Bigotry of any kind. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia. I don't want to be friends with anyone who holds those beliefs. As work colleagues, I can be polite. But not in my personal life.

jeanie99 Sun 17-Oct-21 23:55:33

Even with friends and family you don't always agree with what they say we are all individuals.
What has someone having a different opinion/values to you have to do with disliking that person?

grannyactivist Sun 17-Oct-21 23:55:23

Gosh I don’t know a single person whose every belief would align with mine, but I think I can find some common ground with most people. I like lots of people who don’t share my faith, politics, or world-view and would find it odd if someone didn’t like me simply because they didn’t agree with some of my views.

Chestnut Sun 17-Oct-21 23:47:49

It's more the chemistry between you that decides whether you like that person and get on with them. Obviously it helps if you agree on some things at least.

Zoejory Sun 17-Oct-21 23:18:21

Galaxy

Some of my favourite people who have shown me pretty much unending kindness, are completely different to me politically

That's so good to hear, Galaxy

I too am friendly with people who have different political views. Some family members as well! And we all get on famously.

So no, we don't have to agree on everything. That would be rather dull and insular.

VioletSky Sun 17-Oct-21 22:56:48

rafichagran

No not at all, unless it it is sexist or racist.

I don't think I've met someone sexist or racist that has been so without making it personal if I disagree with them honestly

MerylStreep Sun 17-Oct-21 22:50:51

I don’t dislike some people because of their views but I do dislike some because of they way they express those views.

sharon103 Sun 17-Oct-21 22:41:47

I love a good debate. I like to get on my soap box and air my views but always respect others opinions. I'd never fall out with someone because they didn't agree with me.
I've only got like this as I've got older. Years ago I wouldn't say boo to a goose.
