Going bald..

(114 Posts)

My hair is thinning terribly, so much so that there are visible bald patches and partings all through it.

The question is, do I keep trying ever more inventive ways to cover it up, or bite the bullet and have it cut short?
My head is actually sore and lumpy, so it's going to look awful, but my hair also gets greasy within an hour or two of washing it, and my head is itchy.

Shall I hold out a bit longer in the Hope it may grow back?

What would you do?

MissAdventure Tue 26-Oct-21 23:22:27

I've always had fine hair, dead straight, and never use any heated things on it.
Don't even own a hairdryer and use nothing else.
Just wash and go.
Except now it's my hair that's going.

Sorry, just seen your latest message MissA

Strangely, I tuned into a programme at 10 pm called The Hair Loss Clinic. There was a British Dr treating various conditions and one lady had patches of hair loss and it started after she got Sepsis 6 months earlier. I believe there's every reason that the hair will come back. Yours could be related to your illness MissA.

I've never worm my hair up or had extensions. My sisters and brother have great hair. My mother however had hair loss. So I'm the lucky one then.

MissAdventure Tue 26-Oct-21 23:16:46

Meryl my health is quite alarming at the moment, so I am convinced that is the reason.
Don't panic! smile

If you can't bear the wig due to heat or soreness maybe you could try and get creative with scarves, turban-style.

I know you've had many blood tests for your health issues and are on Vitamin D, but could you find the strength to get a referral specifically for the hair loss. I'm sorry you're feeling so rough.

Kate1949 Tue 26-Oct-21 23:13:37

When I first went to my hair system clinic 13 years ago, it was mainly men clients. Now there are a lot of women.
Stress? I don't know.

MissAdventure Tue 26-Oct-21 23:12:23

I have heard about tension alopecia, caused by having your hair tied up in a ponytail.
Also by wearing hair extensions.
I always assume that is the cause of younger womens problems.
In fact, I first thought my own loss was caused by wearing my hair up for work.

MerylStreep Tue 26-Oct-21 23:11:29

MissAdventure
I have to say this is sounding alarming.
I don’t know if it’s something you would be interested in but my daughter went to an allergy clinic in Westcliff.
Just trying to think of anything ?

crazyH Tue 26-Oct-21 23:10:43

Miss A, strangely enough, when I had Alopaecia Areata, I was jealous of the blonde haired women. I thought the bald patches wouldn’t be so noticeable..

MerylStreep Tue 26-Oct-21 23:08:20

As we all know when you are loosing your hair you look a lot at other women’s hair, particularly on tv.
What I have noticed is that there are an awful lot of young women who I can see have very thin hair. Think back to our mothers and grandmothers hair?
I think there’s something going on here but I’m nowhere near clever enough to know what it is.
I know this sounds bizarre but I remember Dr Miriam Stoppard stating many years ago that hair shampoo was harsher than carpet shampoo ?
Is it the pill? Is it something in the water? Who knows, but somethings going on.

MissAdventure Tue 26-Oct-21 23:02:09

I have the fibres.
They're not bad, actually.
They just get swamped in grease after a few hours, though.
The texture of my hair feels all wrong somehow.
So dry at the ends; all matted, but then I don't like to try and get the tangles out because of losing more hair.

Sweetpeasue Tue 26-Oct-21 22:59:01

I know there are fibres you can buy on Amazon. Not sure if they have the colour match if you wanted tlo try MissA

MissAdventure Tue 26-Oct-21 22:54:07

I was surprised when I looked on youtube at how many women, a lot of them very young, have hairloss.
Then I was jealous because the ones with dark hair can touch up the patches with dark powder and it blends beautifully.
I'm not even sure what colour I would use, as the blonde is too yellow.

Sweetpeasue Tue 26-Oct-21 22:50:34

It's the truly 'shameful' secret that lots of women carry but it shouldn't make us feel this way lollin.
I subscribed to a monthly news brochure by a top British Dermatologist specialising in hair loss (can't remember the name now) but found it only made me focus on the problem more. Take care of yourself.

MissAdventure Tue 26-Oct-21 22:44:18

That's what I worry about with a wig.
I'm a hot person (not in looks, as you can tell!) so the thought of sweating away under something I I can't whip off is unbearable.
Plus, my head is beginning to get a bit sore. Plus, it also has some horrible looking moles on it.

Kate1949 Tue 26-Oct-21 22:43:24

Well threads like this show that we are not alone Lollin. There is no help for women with hair loss. It's not right in my opinion.

Sweetpeasue Tue 26-Oct-21 22:42:16

It could be your hair thinning is to do with your health then MissA and you've reason to think it could be temporary. Easy to say but don't give up hope. Sending good wishes. (some Dr's, eh? ?)

Lollin Tue 26-Oct-21 22:37:52

In one way lockdowns gave me some relief but in other ways I was desperate to get back out so people would not get a shock when they next saw me. My own doctors have never heard my concerns when I have brought up my thinning hair over the years. I get unusually hot so a wig would be unusable. I used to look forward to woolly hats in the winters but rarely am able to wear them now and of course you cannot sit inside with a woolly hat on.
Just thought to share as I feel alone all the time with my thinning hair, but threads like this help me to see I am not.

Sweetpeasue Tue 26-Oct-21 22:35:34

Thankyou for your suggestions MerylStreep. My hair is completely white now so I feel I have to use hairdye more often than it is meant to be used.
I'm so sorry*MissAdventure *. Life can be crap sometimes. I too am having other medical issues, caused by a simple procedure being botched last October made worse by Dr's covering up(other story).
Sincerely hope your own issues can soon get sorted.?

MissAdventure Tue 26-Oct-21 22:34:11

Thanks Kate.
Me too, and in that respect it would be helpful to know what kind of alopecia it is, but it'll keep.

Kate1949 Tue 26-Oct-21 22:31:27

I hope when your health issues are sorted out that your hair improves MissA

MissAdventure Tue 26-Oct-21 22:29:56

No.
Hence I have lots of health issues grin
If he had listened to me 2 years ago when I told him I wasn't well I might not be in this state now!

MerylStreep Tue 26-Oct-21 22:27:59

MissAdventure
I get that. There’s only so many health issues you can deal with at once. I hope you’ve got a good Dr.

MerylStreep Tue 26-Oct-21 22:24:39

Sweetpeasue
Please try and use the least amount of products as you can on your hair. I only use a natural shampoo bar.
I don’t always wear my wig, so when I do my own hair I use this product. It’s not cheap but it really helps a lot ?
