Going bald..

(114 Posts)

My hair is thinning terribly, so much so that there are visible bald patches and partings all through it.

The question is, do I keep trying ever more inventive ways to cover it up, or bite the bullet and have it cut short?
My head is actually sore and lumpy, so it's going to look awful, but my hair also gets greasy within an hour or two of washing it, and my head is itchy.

Shall I hold out a bit longer in the Hope it may grow back?

What would you do?

Dry shampoo is pretty good, I would say, and one of the cheapest options.
Baby powder too, at a push.

I’ve always tied my hair up. At one time I used those scrunchie things. Then covered elastic bands. That got smaller and smaller. I’m now on the size that people use on toddlers hair! When I had my passport photo done I found a spray of something called Bouffe that I used years ago. It really thickened my hair and I resolved to buy some more and continue to use it. You can guess what happened next. No longer available.

That was a while back, Kate.
I have less now.
That one was taken when I first thought..... "hang on, I think there's a problem".
I do still have hair though, not enough to do much with, not so little that I want to shave the last bits.

MissAdventure Wed 27-Oct-21 11:43:42

And I've "pouffed" it up a bit to hide the baldness.
I think it's safe to say it didnt work. wink

Well you've got a lot more hair than me MissA

There we are.
The worlds smallest ponytail.

You're right Sweetpeasue, it is a taboo subject and it shouldn't be! Why should we be ashamed of thinning hair..... but somehow we are. It helps to know we're not alone.

Sweetpeasue Wed 27-Oct-21 10:53:03

Thankyou Sparklefizz and everyone for sharing this very difficult problem. It does help I think. It's still a very much taboo subject I feel.

Kate1949 Wed 27-Oct-21 10:41:17

I don't either but thank you.

MissAdventure Wed 27-Oct-21 10:07:45

Thank you.
I don't use Facebook, but it may help others.

I can really recommend this closed Facebook group: Hair Loss Support & Advice Group.

They are very friendly and helpful.

Yes, it is.
There really isn't any substitute for your own hair, I think, at least in our minds.

Kate1949 Tue 26-Oct-21 23:53:36

Thank you MissA . It's all very difficult isn't it? confused

MissAdventure Tue 26-Oct-21 23:51:38

You do look great, Kate.
You posted a photo once to show the hair system, and it is amazingly natural and healthy looking.
But yes, I get what you're saying about the "fraud" thing.

MissAdventure Tue 26-Oct-21 23:48:59

Thank you "MissElly*.
I'm pretty sure that a hair referral would result in them saying that my hairloss is due to being under the weather.
It's a symptom, I think.

Kate1949 Tue 26-Oct-21 23:46:45

Well MissA that's a good question. I know I look good. Please don't take that as conceited, I'm SO far from that. People tell me I look great, don't look my age etc which, on the one hand is lovely but on the other I feel like a fraud. Does that make sense?

MissAdventure Tue 26-Oct-21 23:43:30

Kate do you still feel that you have no hair, despite how good the hair system is?
Does that feeling remain?

Sweetpeasue Tue 26-Oct-21 23:43:26

I know where you're coming from. There is so much rubbish out there. Whoever comes up with the solution will be a very wealthy person.
Seen the Lucinda Ellery systems and they're very natural looking. Believe Sarah Vine, Gove's wife has it.

Kate1949 Tue 26-Oct-21 23:39:16

There's no logic to it Sweetpeasue. I have seen trichologists, dermatologists, GPs, Regaine. On the recommendations of friends and the Dr Google I have massaged my scalp day and night, rubbed raw onion into my scalp, taken Vitamin D, Multi vitamins, Zinc, cherry juice, cider vinegar, trawled around hairdressers, hair loss clinics (until I found my present one) you name it I've tried it and yet here I am with no hair.

Sweetpeasue

You have a lovely sense of humour MissA . ?

It's being sorely tested these days!
Thank you though.

The longer bits of my hair are a pretty colour, like a whitish ash blonde, but it's so flossy.
I was very tempted to take the scissors to it the other day and chop the lot off.
Instead, I scurf it back; even what's left of my fringe, and tie it in a loose ponytail.
Then I can see lines of bald head shining through.

MissElly Tue 26-Oct-21 23:27:44

Have you considered going to a Trichologist at a dedicated hair loss clinic? I am sure that at the very least they could help with your sore scalp. I really do feel for you. Feeling ill is bad enough without the added stress of feeling that you don’t look good and hair is such a big part of our identity. I have ridiculously fine hair which is also getting worse with age. Really hope you get sorted ??

Kate1949 Have 2 sisters. One has hair loss like my own, the other only natural thinning. My father went bald at 30.. I have one son who has gone bald at front and has just gone 40. Ours is hereditary from my father's line. Mum was OK.
