The image of the royal family

I know old(er) people are not useless and slung on the scrap heap but…
I have just seen a picture of the Queen and Camilla with the headline that Camilla is going to take on more duties to save the Queen. That makes it that a 74 year old is taking up more work than she is currently doing. Putting aside all prejudices against her I just thought the RF are hardly presenting a dynamic leadership for Britain.
When you look at the RF’s of Europe they present a much more current and contemporary face of monarchy, with their tradition of replacing the head of state at a sensible age.
I think it’s very sad that, if the Queen lives for another ten years, like her mother, then Charles will be 82 and another elderly king.
Do we need younger Kings and Queens to represent us so that the UK is not seen as a doddering old country, or does it make no difference to how we seem to other countries or to ourselves?

Apparently Dubonnet and gin was the Queen Mothers favourite tipple.

Calistemon Wed 10-Nov-21 13:35:18

I can never read or hear the word Cinzano without remembering that advert with Joan Collins and Leonard Rossiter!

Josianne Wed 10-Nov-21 07:56:56

It's a bit of an old fashioned drink isn't it?
Cinzano was a favourite of mine around 18 (or a bit younger!)
A girl in my class became one of the Martini girls in a TV ad. I'm sure she had to balance a tray of drinks while on roller skates if I remember correctly.

We bought vermouth a couple of years ago, never again. Awful stuff. Yet when I was young often bought Cinzano and suchlike.

M0nica Wed 10-Nov-21 07:03:18

Ah yes, a Gin and It. It has always struck me as an odd mix as both are based on infusions of herbs and you think the mix could taste quite unpleasant.

Both now come in non-alcoholic varieties and, surprisingly, taste quite nice, but I have yet to mix them.

Calistemon Tue 09-Nov-21 23:21:39

Whether the RF drink, Dubonnet or any other of the brands I mention, all they are drinking is vermouth and whatever their choice of mixer is.

I don't think the RF choose vermouth with lemonade or soda, I think gin is the preferred mixer, Monica!

maddyone Tue 09-Nov-21 19:54:47

I don’t care what it’s called, I think it’s horrid stuff.

M0nica Tue 09-Nov-21 14:27:15

Why is vermouth always sold by brand name? Dubonnet, Cinzano, Martini, Noilly Prat, does the brand matter that much?

If I go anywhere and ask for a vermouth and lemonade, no one knows what I am talking about, but if I went into a bar and asked for a whisky soda, or a gin and tonic, the server, might well then ask me what brand I wanted, but they would immediately know what drink I wanted.

We bought a bottle of Dubonet once and had it with lemonade. It was quite pleasant as far as I remember!

Lincslass Sun 07-Nov-21 15:36:05

Dubbonet and lemonade, a drink in the 70s, not very pleasant. Now Baileys would have been a better choice your Majesty.

Calistemon Sun 07-Nov-21 15:29:31

Viva la Dubonnet!
Or is it le?

Josianne Sun 07-Nov-21 15:24:57

Maybe she is trying to keep in with the French!

Calistemon Sun 07-Nov-21 15:16:07

maddyone

It has been reported today that the Queen has awarded the drink Dubonnet a Royal Warrant. Would this persuade you to buy a bottle?

No, because I tried it and know I don't like it.

Actually, I know someone who does, that's another idea for a Christmas present ?

Mollygo Sun 07-Nov-21 15:14:17

No, but if she gave one to Bailey’s Chocolate Luxe I’d buy another bottle straight away.

Just a few world changing inventions that we have shared with the world.

I’ve visited many countries round the world. One common comment was our manners. And not forgetting our unique sense of humour ?

nadateturbe Thu 04-Nov-21 23:02:20

Good news indeed.

It was announced today that we are the first country in the world to approve the use of a new drug to treat severe covid cases. I’m not sure of the name but it’s described as a game changer especially as it comes in pill form to be taken at home, thereby keeping people out of hospital.

Also of course we were one of the first countries in the world to start vaccinating against the virus last December.

Just two more things to join the long list of what is great about this country.

nadateturbe Thu 04-Nov-21 22:24:36

The churches. I love visiting them when in England. They have so much history and there seems to be a strong community spirit.
In Horsham I was disappointed that the church was locked. A member came as I turned to leave and unlocked it for prayer and asked if I would like to join her. I thought it was a lovely thing to do.

Why don't we sometimes talk about what is good about Britain for a change?

The countryside
Green parks and open spaces
Music
History
Architecture
Coastline
Cultural diversity
Animals and wildlife
Fashion

Just a few to start with.
