I’m poorly ( no not Covid or anything of concern I hope) so to cheer me up my daughter sent videos of 3 year old DGD practising her Christmas songs for nursery. She’s got the movements and is taking it very seriously but according to her one popular carol goes “Away in Jamaica, no crib for a bed”. I think it’s the only time I have smiled in 5 days, and will never be able hear this without thinking of her version.

Lovely grans, I need more cheering up and there will be others like me. Please share any similar pearls.

At assembly, I used to try and do my teacher stare at pupils who used to sway and bump into each other singing, "bang us together, Lord", instead of "bind us together, Lord." It was a rousing chorus to be fair.
One of the prayers has the words, "blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus, " and this became "Diamond Jesus". I catch myself saying that sometimes confused

My friend's little girl used to go shopping with her mum. Sometimes they bought chicken portions (as we used to call them back then) and mushrooms. I asked her one day what they were having for dinner and she replied 'chicken porshrooms'.

My younger brother used to sing "Oh, what fun a history ride in a one-horse open sleigh".

I have a book of jokes that has one about a group of Sunday School children who were asked to draw a picture of the Holy Family's flight into Egypt. One small boy had taken the idea of flight seriously. He drew a plane with four figures, three in the back with halos and one in the front without a halo. The pastor was observing the children and commented, "That's a very nice picture, but who's the person in the front without a halo?" The boy answered, "Oh, that's Pontius, the Pilot."

My little 2 year old grandson saw a younger picture of his father on my wall with no beard. He has a beard now so this was confusing. He stared at it for a couple of minutes and then after consideration simply said It's another daddy which I thought was a crystal clear explanation from a 2 year old.

In a nature class the teacher was asking a group of six year olds to write about what they observed on the morning’s ramble. One little girl raised her hand and asked the teacher “how do you spell sex?”

She asked the child to bring her work to the front and saw “today we saw ants, bees and lots of other in….

On Thursday my 5 yr old grand-daughter was singing her version of the the carol 'Starry Night' which she had performed that day (via video link sad ) with her class.

I joined in with the words as I knew them to be, ie
'It was on a starry night
When the hills were bright
Earth lay sleeping, sleeping calm and still
Then in a cattle shed
In a manger bed
A boy was born, King of all the world'.

I was promptly corrected that lines 4 and 5 were 'actually
'Then in a castle shed
In an angels bed'
and you're singing it AND doing the actions wrong, Grandma' she told me!
In my defence I didn't know there were actions wink grin

For years as a child saying the Eternal Rest Prayer, I said
“& let the petrol light shine upon them” instead of perpetual - it just made sense!!

Not festive I know but the first time we took our GD aged 2 on a boat it took a while to get her aboard , much coaxing and digging in of wellies.
Total grumpy silence as I am chattering away, pointing out seabirds etc.
A sudden huge sigh and looking at me with total disdain she said " You swim in water Nanny, you don't drive on it "

Just a quick thank you to mamaa for reminding me of that carol, which I remember teaching to my classes many years ago.

I haven't heard it since, butI will be humming it all day now!

Take care xx

Was in the car playing i spy with 3YO DGS and he said 'something beginning with B' - I couldn't guess so I gave in and he said 'horn' I explained that horn started with H NOT B and he said - indignantly I might add: 'It does - BEEP'

My grandson told me he is going to be Josie in his school nativity. "You know, Nanna, Mary, Josie and the baby Jesus" .

It used to be almost universal in Scotland to sing A Wean in a Manger

This story is one from 2 years ago that I’d forgotten about. It came up on my FB memories today.
My GS would have been almost 3 and he was with me for the day. I was in my long L shaped kitchen and singing along to Santa Claus is coming to town on the radio. He looks down the kitchen and said No he’s not ?

At the age of 3, and in the middle of summer, my younger sister apparently sat at the hairdresser’s, singing at the top,of her voice, ‘O Come All Ye Faithful, Joyful and Umpumpant….’

For years my daughter had just kept all the sentimental items from her children, like the Moses basket, on top of her wardrobe. When number 4 was announced to a very surprised brood, the then youngest aged 7, said “will it sleep on top of the wardrobe too?” She also said in a very concerned way “mummy you do realise you are going to have to get stair gates !”

As a four year old I was convinced that the carol went

Good king Wencis last looked out
On the feast of Steven
