Last minute grocery deliveries

As a lockdown convert to grocery deliveries, I have been really pleased with this service. I was pleased too, to secure a delivery for Thursday, 23rd. But am I likely to be left high and dry on Thursday, with many items unavailable? In previous years have others had a last minute delivery? I guess I could get stuff on Friday, if available, but I was obviously hoping to avoid actual shopping.

I stand by what I say ! None of this is tongue in cheek ! It is middle class twaddle!!

Don't join in then.

Order delivered today from Waitrose, several substitutions, some more acceptable than others, main one being 2 tiny pots of Panna cotta as substitutes for 700g Christmas Panna cotta Star!! Asked for a refund. As we are isolating the driver kindly unpacked the shopping into our boxes outside and had driven off before we saw the goods.

I had my Christmas Ocado shop delivered this morning. To my utter amazement, only one item was unavailable. In the afternoon I went to collect my turkey and accompaniments from M&S (double masked, for the first time ever) and everything was there. I even managed to get the missing item from my Ocado order too. After all the scaremongering from the media there were no shortages of anything it seems. Can hardly believe it.

I don't know, and I know grin.

My forward planning paid off though. Mr Dog went in search of a mango and got one in Morrisons, so my Christmas Eve supper is saved.

What are you eating?
Recipes welcome!

We were told by email that our late evening Tesco delivery would be late because of problems on the road.

I sympathised with the delivery driver "Are you OK, was a tree down, an accident"?

"No", she said, puzzled, "They hadn't allowed for my meal break"!

My Sainsbury's order arrived today, and the only sub was that they sent a chopped up orange instead of a mango grin.

Who buys a ready chopped orange?
As for it being a substitute for a mango tchconfused

We’ve been very fortunate to get home deliveries from Morrisons and Ocado since the start of the pandemic and are very grateful. Always polite and friendly drivers. Being CEV shopping would be very difficult without them. Our order from Ocado arrived today, everything except chocolate puddings which we can certainly survive without. I think all the delivery people deserve thanks for keeping going in these difficult times.

My Sainsbury's order arrived today, and the only sub was that they sent a chopped up orange instead of a mango grin. Even the delivery guy was puzzled - it went back.

I had an order delivered on Friday with non-perishables, so todays was mainly veg and things like cream and custard.

The sub system at Sainsbury's is that they issue a voucher to the value of any difference in price between what you order and what they send, and I have just left them all on my account as they last for months. I put them against my Christmas order, and got £37 off. Not a bad Christmas bonus grin

Of for goodness sake Susieq this thread is surely tongue in cheek. Lighten up!

Calistemon Wed 22-Dec-21 19:58:11

The usual put-down.

We know and yes, have donated to charity, I'm not unfeeling.

What middle class first world problems !! ?

Bluesapphire all are welcome - I usually make too much!

Christmas doesn’t come in a delivery van!!

Did have a slot for Thursday mid day but, having been in supermarkets yesterday and saw the size of the shopping in trolleys along with very low stocks on shelves, even fruit and veg decided to cancel my slot. Came home looked at my order and went out today to buy the bits and pieces I thought essential (no parsnips for one thing and selection of potatoes very poor). Have a Christmas food collection at M&S for Thursday morning. I have been collecting items eg wine over the past few weeks to avoid disappointment and the mad crush.

Calistemon Wed 22-Dec-21 16:49:31

Thanks, BBbevan
A friend popped round with a present late morning, he said he'd been to M&S at 8 am to 'avoid the rush' and it was chaos, he had to queue to get into the car park!

I don't need much and the farm shop may have what I need (perhaps)

BBbevan Wed 22-Dec-21 16:45:44

Callistemon we were in M&S this morning at eight. Very busy but full shelves. Good luck.

I have my weekly slots booked up to 18 Jan. I always have them booked up 3-4 weeks ahead, only way to make sure I get them when I want. And Tesco’s delivery saver plan not only gives you free delivery Tuesday-Thursday it gives you access to Christmas and Easter slots a week ahead of release to everyone else.

This is me as well. Put a bottle of malt whisky on to hold the slot, then if I forget to add to it we have the essentials ???

Calistemon Wed 22-Dec-21 15:55:26

Interesting that most posters (including me) have received most of their orders.
After the predictions of no turkeys, no vegetables, no deliveries up to Christmas it's a relief to hear.
I didn't order a turkey but I'm assuming there was no shortage in the end?

I hope you get everything you need Lizzie72

I do need to battle M&S tomorrow, though (eek)

GreyKnitter Wed 22-Dec-21 15:39:26

We had a delivery from Tesco on Monday and only a couple of minor substitutions. Nothing missing. Good luck. ???

Bazza Wed 22-Dec-21 15:34:37

Had large Ocado delivery today, a couple of sensible substitutions but two packs of butter were just “out of stock.” I can’t believe they have no butter available so why not substitute another brand? Now I’ll have to brave a supermarket which I was hoping to avoid. Sent an email having a bit of a moan so feel better now!

Lexisgranny Wed 22-Dec-21 15:27:41

We have had our supermarket order delivered since the beginning of the first lockdown. Anticipating the last minute shortages we arranged for our Christmas order to be delivered on. Monday. All fine. We will pop out early tomorrow for fresh goods. We have also booked slots for the weeks following Christmas.

I received my on line groceries from Sainsbury’s s on the 21st all looked good only two substitutes except the salmon bits were out of date, I phoned customer services and was told straight away I’d get the cost paid back into my account for the next order. I think I can live without the salmon I’ve got more food than I need for Christmas Day. In fact I’m needing to get that big bird out the freezer to thaw in time for the 25th. All the veggies received were in their own trays just ready to pop into the oven now to make a honey and mustard glaze for the wee sausages to eat hot or cold.

I’m so pleased with Sainsbury’s on line shopping I’ve already booked my next delivery slot - call me Mrs organiser.
