As a lockdown convert to grocery deliveries, I have been really pleased with this service. I was pleased too, to secure a delivery for Thursday, 23rd. But am I likely to be left high and dry on Thursday, with many items unavailable? In previous years have others had a last minute delivery? I guess I could get stuff on Friday, if available, but I was obviously hoping to avoid actual shopping.

Dragonfly, can I come for your Indonesian rijstafel please? When we lived in Singapore it was a Sunday lunch tradition at some of the big hotels, a huge curry table buffet. DH and I loved it!

Now if I were you Susie I’d be going to M&S first to make sure they haven’t sold out! I so wish I had an M&S within striking distance or that they delivered out here! The ads are mouthwatering! Good luck!

Update from Tesco delivery just now:
3x GU pot packs ordered, 2 delivered
Loose sprouts replaced by packaged
Loose parsnips replaced by packaged

That’s it, everything else as ordered. I’m pleased.

We received our Tesco delivery today. Normally excellent. This time we had 20 substitutions and 8 items unavailable.
The delivery driver was lovely and so apologetic. I said don't worry not your fault, we will gave to manage. Its not the end of the world.

@GermansheperdsMum

Thanks for the reply but I think I’ll brave M&S tomorrow for the perishables after I’ve collected the meat and fish from the butchers and fishmongers.

We took delivery of our Christmas order from ASDA today (Weds). There were 8 substitutions, just different size packs, and no 'out of stock' items. They notified us of the changes by email before they delivered. We had ordered a large turkey crown but they only had a medium one, but the gammon joint they sent was larger than we ordered, so it balances out, there'll be enough to go round. They delivered right on time, the driver was very cheery in his Santa hat and helped to unload the crates for us.

If your order is being picked from your local store there's always a risk that items in high demand will have sold out on the shop floor before they pick your order.

Tomorrow our bakery & dairy order will come from a local bakery, they bake to order so we know we'll get what we asked for. They even deliver on Christmas Day up to midday! Our village shop will also be open Christmas morning for those forgotten items. Last year customers were offered a mince pie and fruit punch to the strains of carols playing in the background!

Mine came on Monday not a lot missing just a couple of replacements that were acceptable.

Woody1 Wed 22-Dec-21 14:23:56

I had an excellent delivery from the co-op. It came the same day all the items were available and I had a text to say the delivery was 2 mins away and another text to say it was here.

Sainsburys substituted my order for fresh turkey gravy with onion gravy granules which I sent back. I guess I’ll have to be less lazy and make my own.

I had my usual Asda slot this morning expecting substitutions or missing items - often 6 or 7 in a big order, but was pleasantly surprised to only have 2subs, both of a dearer brand. And all for the price of the cheap own brand I ordered, not like some places where you have to pay the extra

We are just about fully stocked up, apart from a veggie box plus milk delivery tomorrow, yet DH has booked another supermarket delivery on 27 December! We tend to get heavy non- perishable items eg jars of mayonnaise, cold drinks etc so in a way it is not a problem, but just seems excessive to me.
It must be part of his hoarding instinct!

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 22-Dec-21 13:37:30

You should be able to get an online delivery Susie but under £40 they apply a surcharge, well Tesco do anyway. Perhaps have less frequent deliveries, say every 10 or 14 days?

dragonfly46 Wed 22-Dec-21 13:36:42

Well I got my Dauphinoise.

Maw I am making an Indonesian rijsttafel, numerous desserts, cooking the turkey and trimmings surely I deserve to have an easy meal with steak and ready made potatoes?
In the past I have done it myself just not this year.

The only sub is loose coriander instead of pot!

My sister has just texted me to say our local Asda is bedlam. Nowhere to park, no trolleys. My husband has just gone up there on the bus for a couple of things. He won't be a happy bunny.

My last delivery (didn't get a Christmas week one as I was too lazy to get up early) had one substitution. I ordered tissues and got liquid washing machine capsules. They cost over £9 so I am trying them out - was charged a £1. Just hope we don't get colds.

BBbevan

Just had a brilliant delivery from Sainsburys. I ordered six fresh figs. As substitute I got kiwi fruit !
But six bags = 36 fruit. Something didn’t translate well somewhere

The kiwis went back.

I had a Sainsbury delivery on Sunday with three substitutions. Two I could live with but this one stumped me. I’d ordered a ten pack of lager and they didn’t have any ten packs so sent a four pack, just the one! Why not two? I can only assume a computer us involved but it meant I had to go out and buy another pack.

Susie42 Wed 22-Dec-21 12:50:25

I’ve never been able to access on-line deliveries as I’m told that I do not spend enough. All the supermarkets seem to set a minimum of £40, and I very rarely reach that figure.

Childofthe60s Wed 22-Dec-21 12:37:22

I have just been informed that my ASDA shop will be missing a couple of items, but it's mainly vegan food from ASDA and my daughter can pop in Tesco for replacements. I'm grateful they forewarned me.

Our main Xmas week shop is Morrisons and Xmas day dinner is from M&S. Fingers crossed they deliver everything.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 22-Dec-21 12:12:33

I find Tesco are good on the rare occasions I get a substitution - I can accept it or they take it back and refund very promptly. There’s the option to add notes about substitutions which is helpful, eg if X unavailable same quantity of Y.

Janetashbolt Wed 22-Dec-21 12:05:58

I had my Tesco delivery yesterday dreading loads of unavailable items (I don't do substitutions) but only the turkey gravy missing so I was very lucky and thankful.

Panicked on Sunday when I went for my Click n collect at Tesco. They couldnt find it! Even tho I had email confirming order, email receipt showing my order including substitutions and payment taken from bank, they said I didnt exist and no order there! Poor chap in the collect shed tried his best on phone to sort but in end I had to phone customer services myself. 15 minutes waiting time before I spoke to a lovely lady who couldnt understand what had gone on as she could see the order on the computer! She rang store and got manager on case, and gave me £5 off next shop. Half hour later manager rings me,apologetic. My order found! Waiting in chiller to be taken to click n collect shed but had somehow been missed by the truck that takes orders down there. Many apologies and a free tub if Roses. Did not help my stress level that day!

GreenGran78 Wed 22-Dec-21 11:53:36

I accept that having your shopping delivered is a great convenience for many of you. I have heard of some very strange substitutions, from friends. I live alone, and enjoy my trips to the supermarket, treating them almost as part of my social life. There is always a baby to smile at, or a request to someone taller to reach something down from a top shelf, which usually results in a brief chat. I also make a habit of walking up and down every aisle, just for the extra exercise. It's surprising how many steps that takes in a large supermarket.
I've never felt the need to online shop for food. I just go at quieter times since Covid arrived. Maybe, one day, my elderly legs won't be up to it any more, but not yet.

Bijou Wed 22-Dec-21 11:44:03

I have Sainsbury deliveries and am very satisfied. Tried Waitrose but veg and fruit poor quality. Learned that it is according to from which local store the items are sourced. Waitrose from a small store but Sainsburys a superstore. Iceland do not deliver to my village do from next village three miles away.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 22-Dec-21 11:39:56

Just had my Tesco delivery and all present and correct, no need to find anything elsewhere. Ditto meat from butcher. Fish coming tomorrow then drawbridge up and hoping to be able to have our small family get together in January.

jaylucy Wed 22-Dec-21 11:34:37

We had substitutes last week - but my son has a habit of checking the availability of items before he sends in the order, I sometimes end up with things that he has actually substituted!
Best one last week was one he had done - I wanted a bag of parsnips - I ended up with just one !!!
I'm also unsure how he will be able to make a trifle for 6 with 2 chocolate muffins instead of the packet of madelines he ordered (that was Tescos!)
