Caused discussion yesterday, found in box of crackers. Have no idea what it's for. Can anyone shed any light?

PattyFingers Tue 04-Jan-22 07:11:33

Is it a bottle opener?

MissAdventure Mon 03-Jan-22 19:18:40

I got a little string bag of marbles, going to give them to my BIL, he seems to have lost his!

Beanutz2115 Mon 03-Jan-22 10:30:39

How do you do this?

JackyB Mon 03-Jan-22 10:26:31

When, oh when will our wish be granted, highlighting the OP's subsequent posts in green. Daisymae confirmed within an hour and within the first 10 posts that it must be a paper knife, which is what most people thought it was. Notwithstanding, the thread has gone on for 3 pages repeating the same things.

Actually - scrap that. There has ensued an interesting and amusing discussion on what people have found in crackers and what they have put in them.

I'm probably just jealous because it has been made so difficult to get hold of them here. First you weren't allowed to bring them back in hand luggage, then they extended the ban to checked-in luggage. You're not allowed to post them. And it's an awfully long way from us to go by car, in which, presumably, you would be allowed to transport crackers. They are available in Germany but very rare, and anyway, they wouldn't have the jokes in them. I must remind myself next year to order some from the expat shop well in advance.
Happy New Year everyone!

I think it might be used to get gherkins out of the jar, especially the big ones

I use a carving fork for that, with two long tines. If you stab down into the jar, you get at least one gherkin, and often two, and sometimes you hit the jackpot with three or four.

Where is the little hole for placing over the pleuch, Marydoll ? That handle would cover a ginormous boil, but would be no use on a tiny comedo. Also the pointed end would be difficult to grasp and could cut the fingers.

With a bit of DIY, a dual-purpose hole could be drilled, for extracting blackheads AND for joining the half-scissors to the other half next Christmas, when the same posh crackers will provide the rest of the implement.

phizz Sun 02-Jan-22 23:50:18

I agree with Marydoll. It's a comedo extractor.

Elegran Sun 02-Jan-22 22:28:32

Or opening oysters?

Katek Sun 02-Jan-22 22:10:34

Showed this to dh who said if they’re posh crackers perhaps it’s for removing escargot from their shell!

Elegran Sun 02-Jan-22 19:24:30

Here is a more traditional shaped version.

I think this defines what it is, though some of the suggestions are interesting.

Murder weapon in the wrong hands ?

Bijou Sun 02-Jan-22 17:38:33

Letter opener.

Claudiaclaws Sun 02-Jan-22 17:23:38

Probably a letter opener, but, could it be used for poking corners when a piece of sewing has been turned the right way.

queenofsaanich69 Sun 02-Jan-22 16:31:34

That was an entertaining post, thanks for the laughs !

Grammaretto Sun 02-Jan-22 15:52:53

That is perfectly sweet lizzypopbottle. Our crackers were Waitrose this year and adequate but nothing as fancy as your grater or Daisymae's half-scissor paper-cutter .
I think there was a wooden top in mine which the dog liked.

One year we made our own or rather we bought cheap crackers and altered them by adding proper nice gifts and extra nice chocolates.

lizzypopbottle Sun 02-Jan-22 15:41:02

This mini box grater came out of a cracker years ago. I use it for zesting limes. The apple ? is just for scale.

I have a tiny set of screwdrivers that came in a cracker years ago.
They're really handy!

So have I. I've had them for ages and keep them hidden from OH so that they don't disappear! They are in a little black case and you just select which end you want and slot it in the handle.

Just realised I left my set in full view of DH over Christmas. I haven't a clue where they are now! hmm

Dotty123. Me too. This year I bought some ‘fill your own’ crackers and put a pack of wildflower seeds, a lottery scratch card and a chocolate bear in each.

Dotty123 Sun 02-Jan-22 14:36:13

I buy cheap & cheerful crackers and add something extra: e.g lipstick, sweets, £1 coins, notebook, miniature drinks. It’s amazing what you can stuff in!

grannysyb Sun 02-Jan-22 13:52:41

Some years ago when my two older GCs were small the family had Christmas lunch with my SILs family. His mother bought her crackers at Harrods, some for the children and some for the adults, the box said so. The "adult" crackers produced some interesting things one of which was a mini vibrator! Little voices asked what it was for, not sure what they said!

Joesoap Sun 02-Jan-22 13:36:47

Half a pair of scissors to make you creative what to do with it

Saggi Sun 02-Jan-22 13:34:31

Half pair scissors!?! I once got a miniature screwdriver set ( about three years ago) I’m still using them…brilliant! I had a plastic ( smallish) shoe horn…it’s in my swim- bag and I always use it! This year my granddaughter got a 64 “ tape measure!! Not 60 or 72 ….but 64” tape measure !! Confused , she deliberately set off to measure everybody’s head measurement …. My son won/lost!?!? . But she took it home with her.

grandtanteJE65 Sun 02-Jan-22 13:02:52

I can't judge how large it is, but could it be a bodkin in modern design? The eye certainly looks big enough to thread elastic or tape through.
