Amazon are not accepting Visa payments from mid January so today I changed to a different card on my account. I then goy an email that I had been given a £20 credit for doing so. I had not read anywhere that this would happen so I was a bit suspicious. Any Gners out there with information ab It this? Thanks.

Martin Lewis spoke about it in November.

I got a £10 credit when I did the same.

From what I’ve read this all seems genuine. It’s because the amount Visa charges to use their credit cards are deemed too high for poor old Amazon.

So if you don’t have another card you cannot longer purchase from Amazon!

Hooray! I don’t have another card and avoid Amazon like the plague (Covid-19?).

I was too suspicious when I got the email but checked it and found it was genuine. Fortunately I had another card I could use instead, tricky for anyone who hasn’t got another option though.

Amazon are still accepting Visa debit cards so it’s really not that much of a hardship.

I think Visa charge something like 2.5 to 3% to retailers.
Much of the stuff I get from Amazon is actually from small retailers. For the retailer (as opposed to Amazon) to make the same profit, they would have to charge 2.5 to 3% more.
Other credit card companies are available, so why not use them.

I read that Mastercard charge exactly the same amount as Visa, but don't have a link to support this. I do wonder if in part it's to encourage take up of their own Mastercard they're always pushing every time I order. I have Visa debit/credit and Mastercard cards but will use Visa debit because I despise coercion. When I order from foreign Amazon sites for family living abroad I want to use my Visa card because my issuer doesn't add a transaction charge (unlike my Mastercard issuer) and matches the exchange rate on the day.
