Happy New year everyone! But it's been like a war zone round here all evening and is even worse at midnight. It's so annoying and frightening for young children, animals and wildlife. When will they make it official displays only and stop selling them to the public?

I thought the firework display in London last night was a huge advertisement for the virtual ABBA concerts later this year.

I personally enjoy pyrotechnics. However only on specific days & organised events.

There are more fireworks going off round here tonight!!

Chewbacca Sat 01-Jan-22 18:09:09

I love fireworks and was eagerly looking forward to seeing some last night. Not. A. Single. One.

If, during manufacturing, the ‘BANG’ was removed, problem solved and all parties happy! We can still see beautiful sparkles and colours, but all the creatures wouldn’t be spooked. ?????????‍???????✨✨

You can actually get silent fireworks, but why they aren't more widely used, I have no idea.
Personally, I detest them - mainly for the untold misery and suffering they cause to animals, as well as many PTSD sufferers and quite a number of autistic people too. I also deplore of the waste of money.

We live in a nice area but last night you’d have thought it was the middle of a war zone the noise being made. These were expensive fireworks bought by locals for use in their own gardens.. not an organised display. Very very loud.

MissAdventure Sat 01-Jan-22 17:28:59

I see things in threads here and think how the money could be better spent, if it helps anyone?

kathsue Sat 01-Jan-22 17:14:14

I agree with you Ladystardust. I saw the fireworks in London, on TV, and all I could think about was how that money could have been put to better use.

But lots of things other people do for enjoyment seem pointless to me, but I dont think they should be stopped.

Oldbat1 Sat 01-Jan-22 17:03:31

Didn’t hear or see any in my town.

LadyStardust, no you’re not a misery guts. I enjoyed the displays, I always do, but at the back of my mind is always the thought you expressed.

Thank you Mollygo. I really don't want to stop people having a good time, but it all seems so pointless to me.

I live in an area which has high levels of child poverty. Standing outside last night and seeing the huge amount of fireworks made me cry. Irrational maybe, but all I could think about was that the thousands of pounds (and believe me there were that many) could've been spent more wisely. There are kids going to school hungry, with no proper winter coats and shoes. It's a crazy world. Misery guts aren't I! smile

so what, we cant live our lives around what animals like and don't like.

Maybe you shouldn't have pets if you're so dismissive of them

I worry very much about one of my dogs who is petrified of them.

I'd prefer to have fireworks on November 5th and NYE, the latter starting at midnight.

I love fireworks. But I love animals more. And I'll do whatever I can to make sure they are comfortable and unafraid

Serendipity22 Sat 01-Jan-22 12:42:36

I love the fireworks, to me they symbolise happy times and let's face it, we certainly need some, the night sky lights up and dazzles, i love it.

We have a cat who didnt seem to like it but i say so what, we cant live our lives around what animals like and don't like.

Happy New Year everyone.

ElaineI Sat 01-Jan-22 12:34:32

Less than usual here. Although New Year is one of the allowed times. TV was from Stirling not Edinburgh same as last year.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 01-Jan-22 12:31:28

I watched the fireworks going off all round last night from about 11.45 to 12.30 they were spectacular, but I adore fireworks always have done.

There were a few around 6-7.30pm which I guess were for the younger children.

If they bring some cheer after the last two years of the pandemic I can live with them on New Years Eve, Bonfire Night and Diwali.

I do agree that it is unsettling for some animals and folks though.

Esspee Sat 01-Jan-22 12:30:56

I slept through it I suppose. Suddenly I feel old. confused

Daisend1 Sat 01-Jan-22 12:26:57

Very quiet in my area and wouldn't have known it was NYE compared to other years.Covid has a lot to answer for as for sure many are not taking chances when it comes to their health.

Sarnia Sat 01-Jan-22 12:04:05

I like fireworks at the appropriate times so I expect a few on New Year's Eve.

Beswitched Sat 01-Jan-22 11:41:08

A few went off at midnight here which was fine. But I do agree they should only be allowed during certain times. People deciding to let off fireworks in the garden for a big birthday, or to use up the rest of the new year/Halloween fireworks across the next few nights are a total pain.

AreWeThereYet Sat 01-Jan-22 11:01:52

Ours started at 6 pm (presumably for the children), stopped about 7 pm then restarted again at 11.30 and went on till after 2 am. Very, very loud. I think the two local pubs compete and some nearby residents join in. Same every year. Today our gutters will be full of debris.

At least New Year and the week around Guy Fawkes night they can be expected. We actually get them all year round - many of the neighbours seem to celebrate every occasion with fireworks.

Jaxjacky Sat 01-Jan-22 10:24:33

Lovely fireworks here, more than usual, we watched them. I think many events were cancelled, so more at homes as people were staying in, safer.

Shelbel Sat 01-Jan-22 10:10:12

A lot of fireworks here last night. All along the coastal towns, in Bruges and also various places that must have been individuals.
Some went off at 11.45pm....whats the point in that? I dont mind if its about half an hour and its over and done but its bits and pieces goes on about 2 hours.

Luckily my dog has never been bothered by it but he and the cat are always in. She didn't care either lol but I know that many animals are terrified so it would be good to see it restricted.

As i'm writing this I just heard more being set off. fgs...

Chestnut Sat 01-Jan-22 10:04:58

I'm just wondering if they are actually getting louder with these so-called 'bombs'. Back in the 1990s there were a lot of foreign imports which were ridiculously loud, in fact we were staying with friends in London one year and felt the house shake. They were quite terrifying. There were complaints and I believe they were banned in the early 2000s, so I hope they're not coming back. Maybe we need to report them if they start getting too loud.
