The words of my driving instructor which have always stuck with me "assume everyone else on the road is an idiot and drive accordingly"

Always remember that you have a brake has stayed in my mind.

Aveline , I like " a space will always come" sound advice indeed when turning right . I will remember that when waiting for that space!

Now and then in cookery or domestic science as it was then we would make toffee and sell it to the pupils at lunchtime to add to school funds Well we loved this toffee and quite a fair bit would go into our mouths when we were breaking it up to put in bags for selling so our DS teacher a mrs C devised a foolproof method we had to whistle while we were breaking it up and she would walk round listening to make sure you were whistling, precious little can escape to a pursed up mouth ? ???

Even now decades later I hear my old driving instructors voice as I drive along. Things like, ' A space will always come' when waiting to turn out of a side road, and, 'Two for two,' when it was time to change gear. Also, helpfully, 'Beware of daft drivers' and, 'Always drive good.' I try to.

My all girls school now has boys - my Headmistress will be turning in her grave!

Family coming for meal later today. Have just made a chocolate log as it is always popular. As I was pouring the mixture into the tin, I could hear my Domestic Science teacher saying ‘Encourage it into the corner, girls!”

Oh Miss G, where are you now? Never particularly liked you, but can still remember some of what you taught us ‘girls’ as back in the late 60s, it was DS for the girls and Woodwork for the boys.

On a different track, I see my old Grammar school now has ‘Head Prefects’ as opposed to ‘Head Boys’ and ‘Head Girls’.

Changing times.
