Basically I ignore any e-mails from companies, I never respond to anything. Some of them do look very genuine. If there's a possibility it's genuine (not very often) I would check the official website.

I’ve been sent a plausible email regarding my Oyster card. It really looked as if it came from TFL. They used my name and asked me to go to a link to update the card that paid for my automatic top ups.
For a variety of reasons I was suspicious. I checked the phone number given and it starts with 30, a known number that scammers use.
I expect they were using New Year’s Day to take advantage of fuzzy heads!
