Are you interested in other people's babies?

A friend's daughter is home from France for a few days with her 2 year old son.

Friend arranged to meet a couple of us for coffee so we could see grandson. He was a cute little fellow but quite shy. I played with him a bit and pushed him on the swing while granny went to the loo.

Other friend wasn't hugely interested in the child. She wasn't rude or anything. She remarked how like his mother he was and asked a couple of questions but just wasn't gooing and gaaing over him.

Grandmother has just texted me sounding quite offended that friend didn't pay much attention to her grandson.

But to be honest, this friend isn't really that interested in children other than her own when they were small. I know a few people like that, and that's just the way they are. They're perfectly nice people but other than a few polite questions, they're not bothered about other people's babies.

Just wondering, I suppose, if any of you found that your interest in your own children didn't necessarily prompt an interest in anyone else's?

Now if I knew someone had a kitten, I could hardly contain myself from knocking at their door and asking if I could take a peep.

I'd never held a baby before I had mine.
I used to make myself scarce if any were in the vicinity.

Snap!

I usually need a reason to be interested unless it's an unusually delectable baby. I'm always interested to see the child of my friend who has had multiple cancers and shouldn't have been able to have a child at all. He's a gorgeous little blonde boy and a real life miracle.

My two oldest friends were both childless but some of my neighbours have lovely children.

Not interested at all until they can chatter and interact. I used to dread babies being brought into work for us to admire. I always found something urgent to do in the computer server room.

Had no interest at all in children before I had mine, and not really interested in other children when mine were young. But once mine became teenagers (my favourite time) I suddenly became fascinated by other children. Not really mad on babies, but love toddlers and all ages above. I could sit and watch them for hours, especially toddlers. I would never want to go to an Adults Only hotel for my holiday, watching the children play keeps me entertained!

Young children around 3 or 4 seem to like me.
Like cats that always want to sit on people who would rather they didn't.

??? For some reason strange (as in, unknown) children are attracted to Mr A, who has no interest in them at all ?

A passing interest I suppose. I do find young children quite entertaining most of the time but I can't say I have an overwhelming interest in them. Certainly not interested in viewing lots of photos and long discussions about them. I had all the 'baby' talk years ago when it was of use and some interest, I want to discuss more interesting things these days.

I like tiny babies but I found my own toddlers hard enough work without having to socialise with other peoples toddlers.

Like and love children but not the baby stage. Feel uncomfortable when they assume you want to hold them and as soon as they start crying I quickly hand them back. I find toddlers fascinating and enjoy playing with them, and love chatting to the older ones.

I never mention my GC in the company of friends or relations. However, I always have an up to date photograph on my person should anyone ask. Some do. Some don't. I don't mind one bit. I'm ridiculously besotted enough for all of us.

MissAdventure Wed 05-Jan-22 19:20:39

I prefer a cat. smile
Not in a baby babygro, though I must say babies do look quite cute when they're ready for bed.

Have to say I have no interest in other people's pets. Give me a talcum smelling baby in a babygro any day smile

I have no interest in other peoples babies and I do not want to see endless photos either.

I always make a fuss of other peoples pets though.

I do love all babies and toddlers now, I wasn't interested at all whilst I was a new mother and before that absolutely not at all bored me stupid. So that feeling came quite late for me. However, I don't think the friend's feelings are unusual some people are strange in the way that expect others to be interested in their children/grandchildren hmm why would they be? For example, some very nice people my husband knew first as clients and then as friends seen very infrequently, send out the most detailed breakdown of what has happened to their children/grandchildren complete with photos in a round Robin letter at Christmas time, it kind of misfires really. Firstly we all have families and experiences problems and joys or whatever that we are living, there's no way I would regale people on our card list, unless they are particularly close, with a breakdown of my year through the prism of the family's year, quite honestly how interested can you be in the minutiae of acquaintance's lives.

I'm with BigBertha give me the nice smelling ones and take them back if they cry ? I was fascinated by my own DC, a bit less with the DGC and other people hardly get a look in. When I want to granny boast, I am careful to check my audience
I have one friend with whom I swap WhatsApp photos and videos of our DGC. .
I think the OP's friend is very naive to be offended by someone's lack of interest.
Stick to the weather, holidays or ailments next time.

I like kids, but some can be an acquired taste. However, I would always help if asked. Not asked much these days, but would not volunteer my services.

Calistemon Wed 05-Jan-22 14:55:07

I'm not so keen on other people's babies unless they have got to the moving around, saying a few words stage.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Wed 05-Jan-22 14:54:46

I smile politely but I'm not really into babies, especially other peoples.

Calistemon Wed 05-Jan-22 14:53:13

GagaJo

I fake it for other people's children. Whereas I think my DGS is the son of god.

Does that make you the Mother of God?
?

I like meeting the grandchildren of friends and am interested in my DGC's friends too even if I don't find them all appealing.
I just like watching their interactions, they can be fascinating.

BlueBelle Wed 05-Jan-22 14:51:34

No I m not particular interested in other peoples children NOR other peoples animals thanks
I m polite and pretend a little interest (not too much otherwise they go on and on) having said that if a child needed help or was distressed in any way I be straight there to look after it and I m great with cuddles

Jaxjacky Wed 05-Jan-22 14:49:54

I’m not really interested, I’m polite and make the right noises, neither do I expect other people to be interested in ours.

BigBertha1 Wed 05-Jan-22 14:47:11

I like babies- the quiet, clean, nice smelling ones.
